Book cover of Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion

Laurence Minsky Author Of Audio Branding

From my list on turning a marketing novice into a branding expert.

Why am I passionate about this?

What other topic brings together human behavior, culture, business, the media, and more? And what other career allows you to use that understanding to produce compelling, entertaining, and persuasive communications across broadcast, streaming, social, outdoor, in-store, new product development, and other channels? That’s why I’m passionate about it. And that’s the passion I want to instill in my students, readers, and clients. So, who am I? I’m a professor and marketing consultant (copywritnig, creative direction, and marketing strategy) with large and small clients, and nearly 10 books on the topic. Read these books and I think you’ll become passionate about this topic too!

Laurence's book list on turning a marketing novice into a branding expert

Laurence Minsky Why Laurence loves this book

By now, you might have noticed a theme: if I don’t enjoy reading a book, I don’t trudge through it for the deep insights or how-to information. The storytelling needs to be as strong as the concepts are useful.

Just like The Copy Workshop Workbook, I read an earlier edition of this book when I was just starting out – and it formed the basis for some of my thinking around how to influence – i.e., persuade – consumers and the role psychology and behavioral economics play in crafting effective marketing and brand development programs.

I also recommend this book if you are a consumer, too (who isn’t), because it will help keep you from falling into many of the traps that Cialdini identified.

By Robert B. Cialdini ,

Why should I read it?

27 authors picked Influence as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

The foundational and wildly popular go-to resource for influence and persuasion-a renowned international bestseller, with over 5 million copies sold-now revised adding: new research, new insights, new examples, and online applications.

Using memorable stories and relatable examples, Cialdini makes this crucially important subject surprisingly easy. With Cialdini as a guide, you don't have…

Book cover of Spin Selling

Simon Hazeldine Author Of Neuro-Sell: How Neuroscience can Power Your Sales Success

From my list on sell ethically and effectively.

Why am I passionate about this?

I moved into the profession of selling almost by accident. I certainly wasn’t planning on a career in sales, but after leaving university I was offered a job taking incoming calls from customers. I loved dealing with customers, and it became a natural progression to follow my passion and pursue a career as a sales professional. I have always been fascinated by psychology and am an avid reader and lover of learning, so I became a committed reader of anything related to the profession of selling. In time, I became a professional speaker, consultant, and trainer on the topic and have written several books on the subject.

Simon's book list on sell ethically and effectively

Simon Hazeldine Why Simon loves this book

The research team behind this book tracked 10,000 salespeople, identified what made some more successful than others, and distilled it into a robust methodology.

This book changed the way I sold. It introduced me to what became known as consultative selling. Prior to reading it, I have been taught the more traditional sales approach. The SPIN process was easy to understand and follow, and I saw my sales performance transform because of it.

Its key lessons have remained with me throughout my 35-year sales career. I love it because it takes the focus away from the salesperson and puts it where it should be–on the customer.

By Neil Rackham ,

Why should I read it?

3 authors picked Spin Selling as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

In SPIN Selling, Rackham, who has advised leading companies such as IBM and Honeywell delivers the first book to specifically examine selling high-value product and services. By following the simple,…

Simon's book list on sell ethically and effectively

Simon Hazeldine Why Simon loves this book

How important are customer relationships to sales success? This book really (no pun intended) challenged my thinking. It argues that the classic relationship-building approach that so many salespeople employ to win favor with their customers is flawed.

The research behind this book identified five distinct profiles that all salespeople fall into. What fascinated me was that only one of them, the Challenger, consistently delivered high performance. I have always been a strong advocate of finding out what the very best performers did and replicating it, so I devoured the research in this book.

It changed the way that I presented information to my customers so that I focused on providing valuable insights that challenged my customer's way of thinking so that maximum value could be provided to them.

By Matthew Dixon , Brent Adamson ,

Why should I read it?

2 authors picked The Challenger Sale as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

The need to understand what top-performing reps are doing that their average performing colleagues are not drove Matthew Dixon, Brent Adamson, and their colleagues at Corporate Executive Board to investigate the skills, behaviors, knowledge, and attitudes that matter most for high performance. And what they discovered may be the biggest shock to conventional sales wisdom in decades. Based on an exhaustive study of thousands of sales reps across multiple industries and geographies, "The Challenger Sale" argues that classic relationship building is a losing approach, especially when it comes to selling complex, large-scale business-to-business solutions. The authors' study found that every…

Simon's book list on sell ethically and effectively

Simon Hazeldine Why Simon loves this book

I have found over 35 years of selling that when salespeople are 100% focused on helping customers to succeed, they succeed. The essence of this book is that if you can help your clients, for example, to impact the metrics that matter to them, such as reducing costs and wastage and increasing revenue, quality, and productivity, then both the buyer and the seller will win.

I believe that selling should be about helping customers to succeed, and this book contains a host of valuable ideas and methods to help you to do exactly that. My experience has shown me how important it is to ask the right sort of questions to understand a customer’s situation so that the right solution can be provided.

This book provided me with some excellent insights into how to improve the questions that I asked my customers.

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Let's Get Real or Let's Not Play as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

The new way to transform a sales culture with clarity, authenticity, and emotional intelligence

Too often, the sales process is all about fear. Customers are afraid that they will be talked into making a mistake; salespeople dread being unable to close the deal and make their quotas. No one is happy.

Mahan Khalsa and Randy Illig offer a better way. Salespeople, they argue, do best when they focus 100 percent on helping clients succeed. When customers are successful, both buyer and seller win. When they aren't, both lose. It's no longer sufficient to get clients to buy; a salesperson must…

Scott's book list on how to market and promote a book

Scott Lorenz Why Scott loves this book

Sales of Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Life and Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ were driven in part by techniques outlined in PyroMarketing by Greg Stielstra. The essence of the book is to get small groups of people to buy and read your book and tell their friends. You start this by going to the people most likely to want to read your book and expand from there.

This book covers the essential elements of how to motivate people to buy a book and start word-of-mouth marketing. I’ve listened to the audiobook several times as it's just as packed with solid information authors can use.

By Greg Stielstra ,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked PyroMarketing as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

The era of mass marketing is ending-replaced by the power of customer evangelists unleashed through a systematic approach to word-of-mouth called PyroMarketing. Learn how the system that sparked a revolution in the Christian marketplace can fuel the success of your business. Word-of-mouth is the biggest influence on consumer purchases and its influence is growing. How do you tap its power? The key is not some new technology or advertising fad. The best way to understand the marketing process, the way messages are sent, received, acted upon, and spread, is to think of fire. PyroMarketing simplifies word-of-mouth to a four-step system…

Book cover of The Yes Syndrome: A Complete Guide to Selling Professionally

Wayne Moloney Author Of The Wentworth Prospect: A novel guide to success in B2B sales

From my list on B2B salespeople to stay relevant and successful.

Why am I passionate about this?

Everyone survives by selling something whether we wear the title or not. Selling has been my career, even before I was a salesperson. I started my career in engineering but quickly realised my passion was in developing business, not designing industrial ventilation systems. Helped by a boss who also saw I was better suited to roles other than engineering (he wasn’t so polite) I went on to enjoy a successful career spanning 4 decades working in Australian, Asian, and European markets that embraced all facets of sales and business development. Helped by great mentors and learning from the experience of others, I have endeavoured to give back by mentoring business owners, salespeople, and writing.

Wayne's book list on B2B salespeople to stay relevant and successful

Wayne Moloney Why Wayne loves this book

The YES Syndrome could have been written yesterday.

But it was first published in 1982. Proof that the basics of good selling are not new, but have been the foundation of successful, ethical selling for decades, if not longer.

Combine the timeless customer-focused sales skills that Beveridge shares with the emerging technologies of the 21st century and salespeople will not only remain relevant, but indispensable and invaluable to buyers.

By Don Beveridge ,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked The Yes Syndrome as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

'The YES Syndrome' is much more than simplistic selling techniques or more "HOW-TO." It is a unique, complete system, from the initial "customer needs analysis" through to the sophisticated 'customer focused proposal.' These systems work. They have been proven and Don Beveridge's concepts have been embraced by corporated America.

However, you never want to be sitting alone trying to achieve something all by yourself. It takes a village to succeed. The art comes in knowing how to ask, getting over your fear of being vulnerable, building trust, knowing how to persuade each person you need, and much more. This is my life’s work.
