100 Books Like Overwatch

Submarines are a huge fascination of mine, and this book had plenty of them. What really grabbed my interest in this book were the US Navy submarines that carried nuclear missiles and the procedures that went into launching them. Governments can order the launch of nuclear missiles, but it’s the crew that has to agree to execute those orders. The moral weight of implementing weapons capable of mass destruction is a terrifying thought, which is apparent in the book. 

Written by a former US Naval Submariner, I learned so much about how submarines work and operate. At one point during his career, the author was one of two people whose permission was required to launch a nuclear missile. Crazy!

I loved the characters in this book; they were just plain cool. Former military guys turned clandestine CIA assassins, they bickered constantly with each other under dire circumstances, but always had each other’s backs. It reminded me of the camaraderie during my time in the military. 

Written by a former Green Beret, he brings a level of special operations infused with the shadowy world of the CIA into a thrilling story. I found it fascinating how something like that would operate in the real world, maybe it does? The level of detail in the room-clearing tactics, HALO jumping, and air strikes made the book feel real. 

This book unlocked a new fear of mine, being trapped aboard an aircraft carrier with a serial killer roaming around. I remember reading this one night when the power went out during a storm, and it only heightened the eeriness and my feeling of claustrophobia. 

The author, Brandon Webb, was a former Navy SEAL, bringing firsthand and real-world experience to that of the main character, a Navy SEAL, and how a US Navy aircraft carrier operates. With that, I felt as if I was there, trapped inside a steel box, not knowing who to trust and wondering if I would be the killer’s next victim. 

I’ve always been an admirer of US military history and how fast the technology advances. A concern that became more apparent during my time of service was the threat of being electronically compromised, jammed, or hacked. This book scratched that itch of wondering what would happen if the US military’s most advanced fighter jet were used against us. 

The author was a former US Naval Aviator and a TOPGUN graduate, so when the main character is piloting a F-35 fighter jet, I know what I’m reading is close to the truth. I just loved the level of detail that goes into how fighter pilots fly, talk, and shoot. 

The part about consulting many people hate is the selling bit. Well what better way to go into a conversation in which you are trying to sell your services than with an understanding of the process clients go through to buy? This book provides a useful understanding of the client’s viewpoint of consulting. Although I think it is of best use to those in sales roles in larger consultants and professional services firms, there is also advice, or perhaps a way of thinking, that is useful to everyone from the biggest firm to that single freelance consultant.

I enjoyed Alan Weiss’ book, Million Dollar Consulting, for its refreshingly hard-nosed look at dealing with clients. A business can’t exist without them, but contrary to conventional wisdom, the customer isn’t always right. They’re often difficult, stubborn, and think they know more about a given subject than the expert staring them in the face. Weiss’ book is a practical course on landing and working effectively with clients, especially getting paid what you’re worth. If your business model includes working with high-end clients, this book is a treasure map for growth.

This was the book that really got me thinking about consultancy, professional services and that broad category of work that you get paid to help people because of what you know. The central topic of this book is trust. Now we all understand what trust is – or at least we think we do. But when faced with the challenge of building trust many of us stumble. This book breaks trust down into its component parts and explores how you can use this understanding to build trust. Trust building is essential whenever you offer service to someone else, especially when it is an intangible service like consultancy. Every consultant and every freelancer should read this book.

Whenever I get stuck with a problem, I return to this book. It is especially useful for consultants, but the depth of insight and clarity Block brings on every leadership issue is astounding. Be prepared, though—I find this book to be pretty dense, so don’t expect to breeze through it. Instead, live with it bit by bit like a fine wine. It’s the best reference—I use it as my professional Bible.

I highly recommend Nick Petrie's The Drifter and his follow-on books in the series.
