Book cover of The Enemies of My Country: A David Rivers Thriller

Zander Hatch Author Of Rose Island

From my list on military thrillers written by military veterans.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve always wanted to create stories since I was young, inspired by Clive Cussler, Matthew Reilly, and the action movies of the 80’s and 90’s. After serving for 10 years in the Marine Corps infantry, I decided to combine my passion for storytelling with my military experience. Having deployed five times overseas and serving two years as an infantry instructor, I aim to inject a sense of military realism into fast-paced and action-packed stories. I don’t know it all and I’m always looking for veterans who have written military thrillers to get a different perspective on how the military works elsewhere.

Zander Hatch Why Zander loves this book

I loved the characters in this book; they were just plain cool. Former military guys turned clandestine CIA assassins, they bickered constantly with each other under dire circumstances, but always had each other’s backs. It reminded me of the camaraderie during my time in the military.

Written by a former Green Beret, he brings a level of special operations infused with the shadowy world of the CIA into a thrilling story. I found it fascinating how something like that would operate in the real world, maybe it does? The level of detail in the room-clearing tactics, HALO jumping, and air strikes made the book feel real.

Zander's book list on military thrillers written by military veterans

Zander Hatch Why Zander loves this book

This book unlocked a new fear of mine, being trapped aboard an aircraft carrier with a serial killer roaming around. I remember reading this one night when the power went out during a storm, and it only heightened the eeriness and my feeling of claustrophobia.

The author, Brandon Webb, was a former Navy SEAL, bringing firsthand and real-world experience to that of the main character, a Navy SEAL, and how a US Navy aircraft carrier operates. With that, I felt as if I was there, trapped inside a steel box, not knowing who to trust and wondering if I would be the killer’s next victim.

The moment Navy SEAL sniper Finn sets foot on the USS Abraham Lincoln, it's clear something is deeply wrong.

Zander's book list on military thrillers written by military veterans

Zander Hatch Why Zander loves this book

I’ve always been an admirer of US military history and how fast the technology advances. A concern that became more apparent during my time of service was the threat of being electronically compromised, jammed, or hacked. This book scratched that itch of wondering what would happen if the US military’s most advanced fighter jet were used against us.

The author was a former US Naval Aviator and a TOPGUN graduate, so when the main character is piloting a F-35 fighter jet, I know what I’m reading is close to the truth. I just loved the level of detail that goes into how fighter pilots fly, talk, and shoot.

Zander's book list on military thrillers written by military veterans

Zander Hatch Why Zander loves this book

What I loved about this book was that it blended real-world past experiences into a thrilling fiction narrative. Written by a Marine Iraqi War veteran, he does not shy away from the psychological horrors of combat and addresses how one would deal with those issues head-on.

The main character is written as fragile and sometimes broken by what he’s witnessed in the past. I loved how the book breaks the mold of the stereotypical hero, bringing a new sense of realism to the story.

FX Holden Author Of Aggressor

From my list on war stories you probably haven’t read yet.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’m a former journalist and intelligence officer turned writer, so I seek out authenticity in my reading, especially when it comes to war stories. I look for fiction from people who have been there or know how to listen to those who have, and be their voice. When I write, I always put together a team of veterans and specialists in their fields to challenge my work and make sure I get it right, too!

FX Holden Why FX loves this book

I love a good "what if" plot, and they don’t get much more "what if" than this one, which kicks off a great series.

The plot is mind-blowing, but it’s the gritty characters I love. I also loved the fact they don’t all make it through. There is no "plot armor" for the heroes in this one.

The impossible has spawned the unthinkable. A military experiment in the year 2021has thrust an American-led multinational armada back to 1942, right into the middle of the U.S. naval task force speeding toward Midway Atoll—and what was to be the most spectacular U.S. triumph of the entire war.

Thousands died in the chaos, but the ripples had only begun. For these veterans of Pearl Harbor—led by Admirals Nimitz, Halsey, and Spruance—have…

Book cover of War and Remembrance

Susan J. Eischeid Author Of Mistress of Life and Death: The Dark Journey of Maria Mandl, Head Overseer of the Women's Camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau

From my list on Holocaust books exploring the precious lives lost.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve been drawn to the Holocaust ever since a school project in the tenth grade. Later, as I worked to become a professional musician, the passion to learn more about the topic never left me. When I was first asked to perform some music of the Holocaust, the reaction of the audience (tears) and my own realization that through the power of this music, I could return a voice to so many who had their own voices so cruelly silenced changed my life. To date, I have interviewed multiple survivors of the Holocaust. Many became very dear friends, and my life has been infinitely enriched by knowing them.

Susan's book list on Holocaust books exploring the precious lives lost

Susan J. Eischeid Why Susan loves this book

I love this book because, long ago, it was one of the books that sparked my initial interest in the Second World War and the Holocaust. Through Wouk’s vivid and wonderful story of a fictional family living through the period, he also unexpectedly provided me with a terrific foundation of well-researched historical knowledge.

I had read the prequel a few years earlier and when I discovered this book was coming out (as a poor student, I couldn’t afford it), I eagerly asked for it for Christmas. When the big day arrived, I gleefully tore open the present and spent the next two days reading it nonstop, ignoring all else.

By Herman Wouk ,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked War and Remembrance as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 13.

What is this book about?

A masterpiece of historical fiction and "a journey of extraordinary riches" (New York Times Book Review), War and Remembrance stands as perhaps the great novel of America's "Greatest Generation."

These two classic works capture the tide of world events even as they unfold the compelling tale of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

The multimillion-copy bestsellers that capture all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of the Second World War -- and that constitute Wouk's crowning achievement -- are available for the first time in trade paperback.

Book cover of The Things They Carried

F. Scott Service Author Of The Book of Jack

From my list on exploring the essence of connection and the mystery of who a person is.

Why am I passionate about this?

Who can really claim that they know everything about the human heart, the mind, the soul? The infinite mysteries and complexities of what makes someone who we can call “human.” I'm betting no one. Certainly not me. But what's important is the passion to keep exploring, to keep digging through the mind in an effort to understand myself. That effort, along with what I discover, is one of the most tangible things that not only enriches my living life, but also gives me comfort facing the inevitable end. These books were passionate companions, inspiring me, for however long, to further my efforts in self-discovery.

F. Scott's book list on exploring the essence of connection and the mystery of who a person is

F. Scott Service Why F. Scott loves this book

The book resonates with me on many levels. Firstly, of course, I’m a combat veteran, so the military and living through the hell of war are part of my identity. The author and I share an innate connection there.

But on a different level, it delves into the intangible burdens that resonate for years after the experience – the grief, the guilt, the terror, even the longing to return because it’s what you know.

The title is explicit, and I share the load with all my fellow veterans.

What is this book about?

The million-copy bestseller, which is a ground-breaking meditation on war, memory, imagination, and the redemptive power of storytelling.

'The Things They Carried' is, on its surface, a sequence of award-winning stories about the madness of the Vietnam War; at the same time it has the cumulative power and unity of a novel, with recurring characters and interwoven strands of plot and theme.

But while Vietnam is central to 'The Things They Carried', it is not simply a book about war. It is also a book about the human heart - about the terrible weight of those things we carry through…

Robert Pike Author Of Silent Village: The Life and Death of Oradour-sur-Glane

From my list on extraordinary people in Nazi-occupied France.

Why am I passionate about this?

I am a historian of the Nazi occupation of France during the Second World War and the author of two books about the period. My book about the Oradour-sur-Glane massacre (Silent Village) was published in French this year, and as a result, I was interviewed live on French television. I am fascinated by history from the ground up, and I love revealing the stories of ordinary people whose contributions have been under-represented. My current PhD research focuses on the Resistance in rural French villages, interpreted through a series of micro-histories. I also adore historical fiction. I have a master's degree from Cardiff University and a BA joint Hons from the University of Exeter.

Robert's book list on extraordinary people in Nazi-occupied France

Robert Pike Why Robert loves this book

I never fail to read Kate Mosse's books, and when I saw she had written about the French Resistance, I was hopeful she had done the subject justice. I should not have doubted her; it is a wonderful novel full of intrigue and tension, yet one from which I learned about how the Resistance formed.

Her all-female network is fictional, yet she sets the events during a period of extreme change and events that had a real effect on ordinary people. Women's experiences during the period were long under-represented in the story of the Resistance, and this breathtaking book does them proud.

But in a world where the enemy now lies in every shadow - where neighbour informs on neighbour; where friends disappear without warning and often without trace - love can demand the highest price of all . . .

Book cover of The Good Shepherd

David Clensy Author Of For Those In Peril

From my list on World War 2 naval thrillers.

Why am I passionate about this?

I am a writer with a passion for historical fiction. My latest novel, For Those In Peril, is the first in a series of naval thrillers, partly inspired by my own family’s World War II experiences. My grandfather even makes a cameo as the gruff Liverpudlian chief engineer on the SS John Holt. As a journalist for more than 20 years, I had many rich opportunities to talk to the elderly members of our communities – most memorably, taking a pair of D-Day veterans back to the beaches of Normandy. It’s an honour to keep their memories alive.

David's book list on World War 2 naval thrillers

David Clensy Why David loves this book

This book is a tense and absorbing naval novel set during the early days of World War II.

It follows Commander George Krause, a devout and disciplined U.S. Navy officer, as he leads a convoy of Allied ships across the perilous mid-Atlantic gap. I was hooked from the very first page. Over a gruelling 48-hour period, Krause battles fatigue, self-doubt, and relentless German U-boat attacks, all while navigating the complexities of command and wartime strategy. Forester’s narrative unfolds entirely from Krause’s perspective, offering a deeply introspective portrayal of leadership under pressure.

The novel’s realism and psychological depth make it a standout in naval war fiction. It recently found a new audience when it was adapted into a Tom Hanks movie, Greyhound.

Why should I read it?

1 author picked The Good Shepherd as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

The Good Shepherd was described as one of the best novels of 1955. In it, C.S. Forester departs from the age-of-sail Hornblower genre that made him famous to focus on an American naval officer during World War II. After a somewhat disappointing career, Cdr. George Krause, USN, is at last given the command he has long sought when the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor creates an increased demand for destroyer captains. Assigned to Atlantic convoy escort duty, Krause commands not only his ship, USS Keeling--a Mahan-class destroyer--but also the other escorts assigned to protect a thirty-seven-ship convoy carrying much-needed supplies…

Book cover of March

Pamela Redford Russell Author Of The Woman Who Loved John Wilkes Booth: The Diary of Mary Surratt

From my list on portrayals of real people in historical fiction.

Why am I passionate about this?

I love to read and write historical fiction—seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and feeling the past—revealing the thoughts and emotions of characters real and imagined through psychological insights. My mentor Fawn Brodie wrote non-fiction, specifically psychobiography. Her Thomas Jefferson: an Intimate History introduced the world to the enslaved Sally Hemings. The seeds of my first novel The Woman Who Loved John Wilkes Booth were sown in Fawn Brodie’s UCLA lecture hall. I can only imagine what her historical fiction might’ve been. Now I wait for novels from historians Imani Perry South to America and Isabel Wilkerson Caste. Meantime there are so many wonderful novelists writing history.

Pamela's book list on portrayals of real people in historical fiction

Pamela Redford Russell Why Pamela loves this book

When recommending Geraldine Brooks’ multi-layered and intricately crafted March, another book must always be mentioned. Louisa May Alcott’s Little WomenMarch is the Pulitzer Prize-winning historical fiction rooted in Alcott’s classic novel that’s been read and loved for centuries. The March of the title is Jo March’s father in Little Women. In real life, his name was Amos Bronson Alcott. And he was the father of Louisa May Alcott. Brooks tells March’s fictitious story masterfully and with great historical acumen. Her depictions of Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson are truly historic. Geraldine Brooks is not a historian. Her husband Tony Horwitz was. In Brooks’ case it seems that to fall in love with a historian is to fall in love with history as well. March is the beautiful proof.

What is this book about?

From the author of the acclaimed YEAR OF WONDERS, a historical novel and love story set during a time of catastrophe, on the front lines of the American Civil War. Set during the American Civil War, MARCH tells the story of John March, known to us as the father away from his family of girls in LITTLE WOMEN, Louisa May Alcott's classic American novel. In Brooks' telling, March emerges as an abolitionist and idealistic chaplain on the front lines of a war that tests his faith in himself and in the Union cause when he learns that his side, too,…
