I initially avoided this book, skeptical both of its author and its daunting thickness. Glad I got over my skepticism, because it is an absolute game-changer for long-term health. It’s by far the most comprehensive, scientific, and sensible book I’ve read on “healthspan”how to live healthier longer.

As a fellow M.D., I resonate with Attia’s quantitative, science-based rigor. His “Medicine 3.0” approach cuts through all the fads and nonsense: to be healthy till 90, we’ll want to forestall heart disease, cancer, neurodegenerative disease, and metabolic dysfunction (e.g., diabetes). And do it via early detection and prevention starting today.

As an avid student and practitioner of sleep, I was always looking for a book on sleep science, both for myself and my Happiness Engineering students. There just wasn’t oneuntil Matthew Walker’s book came along. And it’s great! From a real sleep scientist! And he’s funny! With great hair! 

Joking aside, this is the essential text on how sleep works and why we need it so badly. If I spend a third of my life doing something, I’d sure want to know the proper technique. Even more important, it made me super aware of the paramount importance of sleep to health. This is one of my top-recommended books ever. I got my sleep religion through it and hope you do, too.

I found the insights into the complexity of movement simple but not simplistic. Utilizing comparative anatomy gave me a new perspective and color to my understanding. Evolutionary anatomy allows a depth of comprehension of why humans have become such efficient walkers.

Why am I passionate about this?

I have been increasingly interested in astrophysics since I was six years old. My mother hooked me on reading at five by stopping novels at critical points and urging me to continue. I’ve ever since read a broad range of books. I stumbled upon Dr. Loren Eiseley in the early 1970s and enjoyed his books immensely. As soon as a book by Dr. Carl Sagan was published, I wanted to read it. As I’ve grown older, I try not to think that ‘peak humanity’ is behind us–and books such as Sagan, Eiseley, and Rovelli offset that potentially depressing thought and provide solid encouragement.
