Book cover of Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity

Book description

This is the ultimate manual for longevity.

For all its successes, mainstream medicine has failed to make much progress against the diseases of ageing that kill most people: heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and type 2 diabetes. Too often, it intervenes with treatments too late, prolonging lifespan at the expense…

Why read it?

7 authors picked Outlive as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

I initially avoided this book, skeptical both of its author and its daunting thickness. Glad I got over my skepticism, because it is an absolute game-changer for long-term health. It’s by far the most comprehensive, scientific, and sensible book I’ve read on “healthspan”how to live healthier longer.

As a fellow M.D., I resonate with Attia’s quantitative, science-based rigor. His “Medicine 3.0” approach cuts through all the fads and nonsense: to be healthy till 90, we’ll want to forestall heart disease, cancer, neurodegenerative disease, and metabolic dysfunction (e.g., diabetes). And do it via early detection and prevention starting today.…

I haven't even finished this book, because I keep returning to some of the material in the beginning -- to read and think about some more. The sub-sub title says it best: RETHINKING MEDICINE.......and that new perspective is not relevant ONLY to longevity. There is a lot of interesting information in this book that is relevant to overall human health.

I found this book to not only provide the current science of longevity but also lay out concrete guidelines and recommendations.

The first part of the book offers up-to-date science on metabolism, immune function, and neuroscience. He then moves on to contrast conventional assumptions about these topics with recent discoveries. The later part of the book features beliefs that he once held that are now understood as inaccurate.

Throughout the book, he uses himself as an example of someone who thought he knew about health and longevity and how he has recently discovered that some of his efforts were not…

Peter Attia makes the case that we need to look at medicine differently.

Modern medicine focuses too much on treating chronic conditions and diseases once they have emerged. We should be focusing on harnessing scientific understanding to avoid having them occur at all, or at least postponing them.

There is a lot of wisdom in his analysis of what might matter to expanding our health span (years of healthy life), not just life span. Attia can get a bit obsessive at times, but that is part of the fun of reading this book.

A great, practical, and appropriately skeptical summary about what’s known about increasing your health and longevity–drawing on a combination of research and clinical experience.

My one critique is that I’d like to see more on what helps the most per hour, rather than how to maximise your health overall. But overall it’s one of the best books on health I’ve read.

What's the one thing every small business owner can do to maximise the wealth they generate in their lifetime?

Live longer.

Outlive is the "how-to" manual to help us achieve that – showing us simple, practical habits and routines that we can easily implement – not only to live longer but to remain fit and healthy for longer. This book actively encourages you not to simply add years to your life but instead to add life to your years.

The single biggest point of failure in most small businesses is the business owner themselves. Most businesses die along with the…
