This is the best book I’ve ever read on forging, deepening, and maintaining exceptional relationships. The authors are the long-time instructors of the infamous Interpersonal Dynamics course (aka “Touchy-Feely”) at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. They’ve been teaching it for 50+ years combined, so they know what they’re talking about. I love that they define an “exceptional relationship” as one where “you feel seen, known, and appreciated for who you really are, not an edited version of yourself.” Who wouldn’t want more of those?
I particularly like the set of tools the authors offer for handling conflict, creating a safe space for vulnerability, and giving feedback. I appreciate their simple (and challenging) step-by-step plan towards attaining pure relationship gold that's both deeply insightful and transformative.

This book brought to my attention that I’ve been wasting my time (= my life) doing shallow work. Do I need more of that? Hell no. I’d much rather do fulfilling work that matters to myself and the world, i.e., deep work: “activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value, improve your skills, and are hard to replicate.”
Cal Newport is my favorite. His books are thoughtful, well-reasoned, and quietly revolutionary. As an avid student and practitioner of sleep, I was always looking for a book on sleep science, both for myself and my Happiness Engineering students. There just wasn’t one—until Matthew Walker’s book came along. And it’s great! From a real sleep scientist! And he’s funny! With great hair!
Joking aside, this is the essential text on how sleep works and why we need it so badly. If I spend a third of my life doing something, I’d sure want to know the proper technique. Even more important, it made me super aware of the paramount importance of sleep to health. This is one of my top-recommended books ever. I got my sleep religion through it and hope you do, too.

This is the book I've re-read the most. It’s also the book I’ve gifted the most. Why? Because amongst the hundreds of personal growth books I’ve read, none laid out for me a clearer path to lasting inner peace and transcendence.
Singer identifies the central problem of human existence: we don’t feel right on the inside, so we rearrange the outside world to feel better on the inside. That ain’t ever gonna work. Instead, Singer guides us along the path of spiritual growth towards what does work: unclenching our way to true liberation from our own thoughts and blockages.
I try to re-read a chapter of this book daily as a reminder to apply its principles. It has profoundly enriched my life. Can’t recommend it highly enough.

I initially avoided this book, skeptical both of its author and its daunting thickness. Glad I got over my skepticism, because it is an absolute game-changer for long-term health. It’s by far the most comprehensive, scientific, and sensible book I’ve read on “healthspan”—how to live healthier longer.
