All the books on my list have to do with writers, whether they’re writing memoirs, novels, interviews, or keeping a diary. What I loved about Bridget Jones’s Diary was the fun that its author had in writing a book that plays with the themes, characters, and some of the plot points of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
It’s wonderful when a writer knows her literary history and is comfortable enough to let us enjoy its evolution and laugh at it. Having lost 30 pounds in the last couple of years, I can honestly say that I appreciate a writer who not only references Jane Austen, but can write with wit and candor.
This was such an entertaining read, especially in its casual format – diary entries kept by a working woman who wants to lose weight. I also enjoyed the 2001 movie.

I grew up in a household with a secret at its center, one that I've long suspected held trauma. Long before the formation of the family I was born into, my mother was a divorcee with a young child, my eldest sister (a fact I only found out by finding a photo of my parents’ wedding with my sister in it!). My mother refused to tell my sister anything about her biological father or the circumstances of the divorce, saying only that she “preferred to pretend that part of her life had never happened.” I never did learn the full story. Needless to say, novels that give their protagonist that chance are very close to my heart.
I’m sure I’ve never laughed out loud so many times while reading a book that explores the effects of deep trauma.
What I love here is that we barely know the extent of Eleanor’s childhood trauma until the very end. What we experience instead is the increasingly interesting life of someone who doesn’t at all fit into the social world as we know it but is about as endearing in her innocence and brute honesty as they come.
The way Eleanor Oliphant sees the world made me appreciate how ridiculous so many of our social rituals can be. I rooted for her every step of the way and came away almost wishing I could wear her particular goggles when walking through my own life.
