Eleanor's voice is so specific, so precise, that I felt close to her long before I understood the weight of what she was carrying around. I'm always drawn to characters who build survival systems out of avoidance.
The story made me laugh, but left me with a quiet ache that only very honest comic fiction can manage.

I loved this because it takes something that should be simple – an all-the-family Christmas present of DNA testing kits - and turns it into a grenade rolled across the tinselled table.
I'm fascinated by families who crack on that things are rosy when it's clear to anyone looking on that there's big trouble in paradise. Kate Davies writes that trouble beautifully: the jokes, the awkwardness, the desperate urge to keep a smile on your face when normal didn't so much leave the room as move off-grid.

The premise suggests anything but romance and comedy. The Wedding People soon becomes warm, strange, and generous. I've been to a fair few pressure cooker nuptials in my time. Guests ratchet up smiles no matter what.
I loved how, in this book, grief collides with celebration. More than that, I love how the story ends on a hopeful note, rather than trying to leave everything neat and tidy. There's a glorious sense of people behaving very badly indeed, and still finding ways to be happy. And in dark times, that's exactly what I ask of a good book.
