Why am I passionate about this?

As a bestselling ghostwriter, I spend a lot of time reading what everyone’s reading—the chart-toppers and book club favorites. But when I stepped out of the shadows to write my own memoir about love and loss, I leaned on less obvious writers to inspire me forward. I believe that everyone has a story to tell and a unique way to tell it, and one of the more magical aspects of being a reader is discovering those voices that speak directly to you, who make you laugh when you want to cry, and allow you to breathe again. I hope my favorites list similarly lifts you up!

The books I picked & why

Samantha Rose Why I love this book

I do not easily fall in love, but I fell hard for Phoebe, an imperfect protagonist who navigates life’s difficulties and hard disappointments with dark humor and depth.

I thought I knew where this story was headed and was delighted to be proven dead wrong. This unlikely love story reminded me to trust in the unexpected—not only from life and from the people who drift in and out of it, but also by how we can most often surprise ourselves.

I devoured it to the last word.

A propulsive and uncommonly wise novel about one unexpected wedding guest and the surprising people who help her start anew.

It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming…

Book cover of The Comfort Book

Samantha Rose Why I love this book

I have dog-eared and underlined so much of this small but mighty book because it helped me through my darkest grief.

Its big heart and clear-eyed wisdom spoke to me when I needed a trusted companion. True to its name, I return to it again and again, and I don’t do that often; I typically finish a book and stuff it into a shelf, but this one has a permanent position on my nightstand.

Book cover of You Could Make This Place Beautiful: A Memoir

Samantha Rose Why I love this book

This exquisite memoir validated for me what I already know but sometimes resist in my own writing: let it bleed onto the page. The grief, the heartache, the anger, the resolve.

I read this book nestled safely in bed and caught myself thinking: Yes! Do more of this. Throw off the damn blankets and tell the truth! That’s how we heal.

Book cover of All My Puny Sorrows

Samantha Rose Why I love this book

Painfully and beautifully relatable.

All My Puny Sorrows had a profound effect on me as I was wrestling with the loss of someone I loved fiercely and who wished to die. And while this story examines the intricacies of a tragic family dynamic, it’s also very funny—a contrasting combination I adore.

Laughing in the face of heartbreak is my favorite strategy for healing, and this book delivers both.

From the bestselling author of Women Talking, a "wrenchingly honest, darkly funny novel" (Entertainment Weekly).

Elf and Yoli are sisters. After Elf's latest attempt, Yoli must quickly determine how to keep her family from falling apart while facing a profound question: what do you do for a loved one…

Book cover of More Than a Woman

Samantha Rose Why I love this book

This book made me cry-laugh on nearly every page.

True confession: I read it while going through the first stages of perimenopause (erratic moods marked by intense anger followed by existential panic), and Moran’s words were more effective than hormone therapy.

I want her to be my on-call girlfriend throughout midlife to hold my hand as I struggle with body dysmorphia, poor parenting, and a grossly belated return to dating. If anyone has her direct number, please forward it to me.

THE SUNDAY TIMES NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER

'Exceptionally brilliant and powerful' Marina Hyde

'This book is a hilarious memoir, a passionate polemic, and a moving manifesto on how to be a decent person and try, in the face of countless stresses, to live a full open-hearted, joyous life' Sunday Times

A decade ago, Caitlin Moran thought she had it all figured out. Her instant bestseller How to Be a Woman was a game-changing take on feminism, the patriarchy, and the general 'hoo-ha' of becoming a woman. Back then, she firmly believed 'the difficult bit' was over, and her forties were going…
