Gwen's book list on for next-level novelists

Gwen Hayes Why Gwen loves this book

The original Save the Cat by Blake Snyder was written for screenplays but captured the imagination of all kinds of writers, myself included. But often it was difficult to translate to novel format. Jessica Brody’s book is an excellent adaptation of Snyder’s foundation for book people.

The story structure methodology uses the same 15 beats (plot points) as the screenplay version. I love that Brody uses book examples as even most books about writing books tend to use movie examples. I think some authors worry about following story structure too closely, but I have always felt thinking analytically about story can only improve your writing. It’s only formulaic if you write it that way.

The houses on your block probably all have walls, roofs, foundations, floors, and plumbing…but they don’t all look the same, even on the outside. Once you get inside—all bets are off, right? But they all need…

Revealing the 15 "beats" (plot points) that comprise a successful story--from the opening image to the finale--this book lays out the Ten Story Genres (Monster in the House; Whydunit; Dude with a Problem) alongside quirky, original insights (Save the Cat; Shard of Glass) to help novelists craft a plot…

Gwen Hayes Why Gwen loves this book

I loved how this book made me think about why I like stories. What engages me as a reader and excites me as a writer? Why two books with the same tropes can hit so differently. And how to add what the author refers to as “butter” to both the writing and the marketing, which is very important.

If your back cover copy is dry toast, it doesn’t matter how wonderful the writing on the inside is. The author is also very engaging and warm and my favorite, funny.

1 author picked 7 Figure Fiction as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

There are only, in my humble opinion, two kinds of readers.

Readers who love your books.

and…

Readers who don’t know they love your books yet.

But how do you reach those readers in the second category, no matter what kind of writer you are?

The answer to that question is…

Universal Fantasy

Universal Fantasy is why my sales tripled when I “accidentally” wrote three books that landed in the Amazon Top 100.

Universal Fantasy is why some authors get gobs of gushing reviews and some authors who write “way better” get crickets.

Universal Fantasy is the answer to many…

Gwen's book list on for next-level novelists

Gwen Hayes Why Gwen loves this book

This is one of the first books I read about writing that gave me that A-HA feeling. Originally published in 1999, it’s still relevant and foundational. What does your character want? Why? And what is standing in their way? It seems like a simple concept, but it isn’t easy! And boy, oh boy, if you are missing one of those elements, it can be the difference between a page-turner and a wall-banger (when a reader throws your book against the wall because you just wasted their time.)

Without really understanding what your character wants and why, writers risk nonsensical plot progression and alienating the reader.

It’s never too early to think about how to actually sell your books, whether you indie publish or pitch to agents and editors. Writing a series is more profitable in almost every genre compared to writing standalone novels. And it will save you much heartache to have a series in mind before you start book one. Trust me. You don’t want to write yourself into a corner in book one that makes book two or three implausible. Think…Star Wars trilogy (the original 123 that became 456 in later years) as opposed to Speed and Speed 2. Which flowed better?

I’ve seen Ms.York speak at conferences, and her book voice is just as candid and engaging. This book covers many business writing/publishing topics but is never dry. From how to use comparable titles to world-building, I find myself returning to this book often.

- writing the first book in a series

Book cover of Plot & Structure: Techniques and Exercises for Crafting a Plot That Grips Readers from Start to Finish

Hallie Ephron Author Of Writing and Selling Your Mystery Novel

From my list on write books for turning out a killer mystery novel.

Why am I passionate about this?

I grew up in a family of writers; my parents and three sisters were all successful writers, and I was the odd one out with a passion for teaching. I love to simplify, diagram, and make the complex graspable. And what’s not to like about a career in which people listen to you tell them what to do? I began writing after years of teaching, and my first novel was a mystery—a genre that no one in my family had yet written and which I’d been loving since my first Nancy Drew and Agatha Christie. Now, I combine the two: teaching and writing. Playing to both strengths and passing along what I’ve learned.

Another book that focuses on story structure, and explains the difference between literary and commercial fiction without talking down to those of us who aspire to the latter. I found it full of illuminating visuals, excellent examples, and exercises to help me immediately apply his advice. And above all, remember that advice weeks later as I write more and more pages.

It works because he does more than expound. He *engages* the reader–mentally and physically. Reading the book is like taking a master class.

I’ve sold over three-quarters of a million books and particularly enjoy writing about dysfunctional families and unpleasant neighbours! Several of my novels touch upon this theme: The Visitors, The New Neighbour, and Violets Are Blue, to name just three. I’m a full-time author and I’m also an avid reader of thrillers and enjoy nothing more than reading a book with an ending that makes me gasp!

Miranda Rijks Why Miranda loves this book

I really enjoyed this engaging plot and the characters have interesting dynamics.

It’s definitely a character-driven story and the dual narration from Izzy and Tristan worked beautifully for me, giving each of them a distinct voice and adding depth as their backstories unfolded.

I especially liked how their perspectives contrasted and played off one another.

Book cover of Twelve Days in May

Cressida McLaughlin Author Of The Happy Hour

From my list on romance books where time is important.

Why am I passionate about this?

I am a voracious reader of romantic fiction, and I’m always drawn in by books where time plays an important role. I love it when the characters have limited time and are on a countdown, or time is stretched out between their interactions, or when one single moment changes the course of their lives so completely. It always adds so much conflict and drama to a plot, as if time is a character in itself: it’s such a big thing in all our lives, but it’s also, in some respects, completely arbitrary. I love all these books because time and timing have such a big impact on the characters.

Cressida's book list on romance books where time is important

Cressida McLaughlin Why Cressida loves this book

I fell in love with Lizzy and Ciaran as they tried to find their way back to each other after over a decade of not speaking. I loved the glamour of the Cannes film festival, which was a backdrop to the very real, human, unglamorous resentments they were harbouring, and I was gripped by the sense of time running out as the festival progressed.

The flashbacks to their time in France when they first met were gripping, and I was swept away by these two completely believable characters but was also caught up in the sizzle between them, and it’s such a funny, heartfelt book too.

Book cover of The Fox Woman

K. Bird Lincoln Author Of Tiger Lily

From my list on fantasy if you’re hungry for romantic kitsune lore.

Why am I passionate about this?

I used to steal Tolkien and Piers Anthony books from my older brother’s bookcase and burn through library world mythology sections like a ravenous beast. When I reached college in the 1990s, I realized “world” mythology had usually meant “Western” myths, and that’s when I became a Japanese Studies major and dove headfirst into feudal Japan: kitsune, dragons, dream-eaters, tengu, and other fantastical creatures. I was in love. Perfectly natural that when I started writing novels, my brain conjured romantic fantasy based on East Asian myths. Hope you’re ready to fall in love as well, with the Japanese version of fox spirits—kitsune!

K.'s book list on fantasy if you’re hungry for romantic kitsune lore

K. Bird Lincoln Why K. loves this book

In 2000, there were few English-language fantasy books based on Japanese myths. I opened this one, and instantly, Heian Period Feudal Japan came alive in a lyrical, mesmerizing way, unlike the dry history books.

And unlike the fantasy I’d grown up with, the main voice of the book was a woman—a complicated, imperfect magical kitsune who also felt like a human woman. This book made me hungrier for more non-Western myths as a lens through which to view my own concepts of womanhood.

Kitsune embarks on a journey that will change her, her family, and all the humans she encounters...and the magic she conjures will transform all of their lives forever. Book cover of The Slide Area

Laurence Klavan Author Of The Cutting Room

From my list on Hollywood murder, crime, and failure.

Why am I passionate about this?

As a child, finding reality both overwhelming and boring, I was drawn to movies. My father, a New York City disc jockey also at odds with reality, had contacts at a sixteen-millimeter movie rental company. He often brought films home, shown in a makeshift screening room he set up in our basement. Singin’ in the Rain, the classic musical, made a great impression there. Its funny first scene at a movie premiere featured a pompous star’s ennobling account of his early days, comically contradicted by the tacky, scrounging, painfully undignified truth. What lay behind Hollywood's glamor, smiles, and success soon became as interesting to me as what was on the screen.

Laurence's book list on Hollywood murder, crime, and failure

Laurence Klavan Why Laurence loves this book

Gavin Lambert adapted the works of D. H. Lawrence and Tennessee Williams for the films Sons and Lovers and The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone. He directed one interesting, low-budget, Paul Bowles-like movie, Another Sky. His prose work is insightful about the behind-the-scenes world of the movies.

The linked stories in this book memorably spotlight hangers-on and working-class people on the edges of entertainment. Also of interest is Inside Daisy Clover, his novel about a teen tomboy star which became an affected, bombastic, entertaining Natalie Wood movie.

What is this book about?

The land along Pacific Palisades is apt to slip away without warning, hence the road-side signs - SLIDE AREA. Narrated by a script-writer, Lambert's widely-acclaimed 1959 Hollywood classic of lonely souls marooned on a glittering wasteland is a perceptive and sensitive study of human emotion.

Book cover of The Coming of Galactus

Stan Lai Author Of Creativitry

From my list on books for creativity that aren’t about creativity.

Why am I passionate about this?

I am actually NOT a good person to make any reading list, because I am not an avid reader. As the most performed playwright in the Chinese speaking world, the fuel for my over 40 plays comes from life itself, not by books about art/creativity. To be creative, you need to be inspired by life, to see how great works of art are composed, including nature. To understand life you need to focus intensely on it and observe how it works in as objective a way as possible. It’s great to find a book about creativity that will help your creativity, but I find life itself is the greatest inspiration.

Stan's book list on books for creativity that aren’t about creativity

Stan Lai Why Stan loves this book

These 3 continuous comics from 1966 (Fantastic Four #48-50) were a master class in creativity for me, even before I started out as an artist.

I grew up an avid collector of Marvel comics in the 60s, in Taiwan, where they were not for sale anywhere, and I had to scrounge and search the streets of Taipei for used copies.

I accumulated a massive collection that I later sold for a Martin guitar. These 3 continuous comics from 1966 were a master class in creativity for me even before I started out as an artist.

They taught me: how to tell a story brilliantly; how to embed a twist in the inner core of the story: the villain Galactus, who has the power to destroy Earth, is just another guy who is tending to his needs – he is hungry, and Earth can provide a meal for him. Wow. What…
