I fell in love with these folktales after watching the television series of the same title when I was a child. I was ecstatic to be hypnotised all over again by the magic, charm, and wisdom contained within each gem. I found each story conjured up a sense of wonder, mystery, and the need to know what happened next within me.
I loved how the characters were beautifully portrayed. Each faced their own intriguing quest and struggled to overcome outlandish obstacles, and I was fascinated by how they would eventually achieve their goal no matter what the cost to themselves whilst learning a valuable lesson along the way.

As a child, I struggled with reading, but this changed when I opened the magical pages of this gem! Not only packed with adventure, magic, and monsters, it’s also part game. I write fairy tales and folklore, dark fantasy and horror. I have an academic background in history and archaeology. I am Australian (yes, lots of scary creatures here!) but inspired by this rich, multicultural country with First Nations tales for over 60,000 years. I adored this book. I loved its clever fairy tale reimagining of Beauty and Beast set in 1940s Germany under the Third Reich. I enjoyed the transformation of this classic fairy tale into a historical novel that was rich in detail and unique characters and revealed much of the hidden voices of resistance within Germany during this time.

I have a passion for reading and telling tales. But I am a Christian first and foremost, and when I am not studying the Bible, I love to write when my mind is at rest and not too busy with life’s responsibilities. This book in collection of fairy tale stories is filled as a treasure trove with lessons, rhymes, and songs to dance about my heart, whether in a light-hearted fantasy fair beat or in a requiem drama of heart strings pulled where my very tears seem to harmonize the general melody in tone the book sings to in its many narratives.

My favorite books as a child were the ones where kids went off on wild, impossible adventures alone, figuring things out, learning important lessons, and finding they were more capable than they thought. Wisdom, truth, insight, inspiration… those are the treasures found in these fantastical places. I’ve written (and told) stories all my life, but it wasn’t until I was in my fifties that my goal of publishing a book was realized. And now I have four more coming out (Lord willing!) within the next year and a half. It’s never too late. Unless you’re dead, then you blew it. So don’t stop trying, whatever your goals are.
Not the new, watered-down versions, mind you. The original, dark ones that you read now and think, “Who in their right mind would let a kid read this?”
These stories were insane, and I couldn’t get enough of them. And the thing about these stories is that they’re real. There are monsters living among us (we read about them in the news). There’s a reason to be cautious and aware of our surroundings. Life isn’t all sunshine and lollipops, and I think it’s not a bad idea to let kids know that bad things happen, but that children can be stronger than they think. After all, Hansel and Gretel sent the witch into the oven instead of themselves.
