Why am I passionate about this?

For over a decade, I’ve helped women shift from feeling uncertain or ashamed about money to building real wealth. Bola Sokunbi Why Bola loves this book

First of all, Jen Sincero’s voice is hilarious, down-to-earth, and completely refreshing.

She basically grabs you by the shoulders and tells you to stop messing around. I remember laughing out loud while reading this. What I love most is that she shares her own journey in an honest, testimony-style way, so it doesn't feel preachy. Instead, it feels relatable.

Her writing style is great in that it makes you see the small ways you may be downplaying your ambition or talking yourself out of bigger goals. It’s the perfect reality check when you need to stop doubting yourself and start confidently going after what you want.

Bola Sokunbi Why Bola loves this book

There was a season in my life and business where I prayed for growth, then hesitated when it showed up because I got scared. That’s why Year of Yes hit me so deeply.

Shonda Rhimes, one of the most powerful women in Hollywood, admits she was terrified of saying yes to the very opportunities she worked so hard to create. That kind of honesty is refreshing.

Her “Year of Yes" challenge is funny, vulnerable, and motivating. It reminded me that fear doesn’t disappear just because you become successful (if anything, it grows!). What changes everything is the decision to move anyway. Shonda pushed me to stop shrinking and start leaning into the rooms and responsibilities I’d earned.

If you’ve been waiting to feel ready, this is your reminder that stepping into your next level starts with saying yes to yourself.

As the mega-talented creator of Grey's Anatomyand Scandaland executive producer of How to Get Away with Murderand the single mom of three children, Shonda Rhimes had lots of good reasons to say NO when an unexpected invitation arrived. Hollywood party? No. Speaking engagement? No. Media appearances? No. [The side benefit of saying No for an introvert like her: nothing new to fear.]

Then Shonda's sister laid down a challenge: just for one year, try to say YES to the invitations that come your way. Shonda reluctantly agreed?and the result was nothing short of transformative. In YEAR OF YES, Shonda Rhimes…

Bola Sokunbi Why Bola loves this book

I’ve read this book twice and own it in both physical and audio form; that’s how much I love it.

It stopped me in my tracks because it puts words to something we all experience but don’t always admit: getting in our own way! Brianna Wiest explains that self-sabotage isn’t a character flaw; it’s often a coping mechanism. That perspective really shifted things for me.

As I’ve built my business and navigated life, there have been so many moments where I would make excuses and self-sabotage, sometimes without even realizing it. Brianna’s approach helped me identify when I do and call myself out so I could move forward.

If you’ve been holding yourself back from your next level due to self-sabotage, this book will challenge you in the best way.

Bola's book list on building a wealthy mindset

Bola Sokunbi Why Bola loves this book

I’ve read this book multiple times, and every time it gives me a mindset reset.

Brian Tracy is direct; if you want different results, you have to take ownership of your habits. As a mom, wife, and business owner juggling a lot with limited time, I was challenged in a good way. It reminded me that discipline isn’t about being extreme or perfect. It’s about small, consistent actions.

Discipline and grace can coexist. Some seasons require pushing forward. Other seasons require rest. The power is in knowing the difference. Pursuing big goals means showing up consistently, not flawlessly.

This book is practical, honest, and a helpful reset when I feel myself drifting into “I’ll do it later” mode.

Book cover of The Open-Focus Brain: Harnessing the Power of Attention to Heal Mind and Body

Jim Brown Author Of Mindleap: A Fresh View of Education Empowered by Neuroscience and Systems Thinking

From my list on brain, mind, and consciousness.

Why am I passionate about this?

I have spent my entire professional life quietly patrolling the frontiers of understanding human consciousness. I was an early adopter in the burgeoning field of biofeedback, then neurofeedback and neuroscience, plus theory and practices of humanistic and transpersonal psychology, plus steeping myself in systems theory as a context for all these other fields of focus. I hold a MS in psychology from San Francisco State University and a PhD from Saybrook Institute. I live in Mount Shasta CA with Molly, my life partner for over 60 years. We have two sons and two grandchildren.

Jim's book list on brain, mind, and consciousness

Jim Brown Why Jim loves this book

Les Fehmi (recently deceased, to my great sadness) was a mentor of mine from the early days of biofeedback training decades ago. He was truly one of the great pioneers in the study of consciousness and the brain. This book, co-authored with Jim Robbins, is a succinct presentation of his brilliant discoveries about the deep mysteries of attention as a gateway to experiencing the most subtle aspects of consciousness in general.

What is this book about?

A breakthrough, drug-free approach to stress and stress-related illnesses—from anxiety and depression to ADHD and chronic pain—using simple attention exercises with powerful results on physical and mental health

This breakthrough book presents a disarmingly simple idea: The way we pay attention in daily life can play a critical role in our health and well-being. According to Dr. Les Fehmi, a clinical psychologist and researcher, many of us have become stuck in "narrow-focus attention": a tense, constricted, survival mode of attention that holds us in a state of chronic stress—and which lies at the root of common ailments including anxiety, depression,…

Book cover of The Status Seekers

Loretta Graziano Breuning Author Of Status Games: Why We Play and How to Stop

From my list on status anxiety.

Why am I passionate about this?

I grew up around a lot of suffering over status. I didn’t want to suffer, so I kept trying to understand why everyone plays a game that they insist they don’t want to play. I found my answer when I studied evolutionary psychology. This answer really hit home when I watched David Attenborough’s wildlife documentaries. I saw the social rivalry among our mammalian ancestors, and it motivated me to research the biology behind it. I took early retirement from a career as a Professor of Management and started writing books about the brain chemistry we share with earlier mammals. I’m so glad I found my power over my inner mammal!

Loretta's book list on status anxiety

Loretta Graziano Breuning Why Loretta loves this book

This 1950s view of status-seeking is fun because it’s far away yet eerily familiar. The small details that reveal a person’s social class are explored. Your sex life and social life are scrutinized, along with religion, education, politics, and “the totem poles of job prestige.”

Packard wrote many popular sociology books in the 1950s. I loved his book The Human Side of Animals. It shows how animals compete for social dominance because it helps their genes survive. So why does the author blame society for status-seeking in this book? He knows the truth: all societies have status-seeking because we’re all mammals. I think this book has a bitter tone because the author is appealing to bitter readers. Fortunately, we have a choice about playing the game.

Book cover of Power Your Mind: Tools to Build Resilience

Em Lyons Bouch Author Of Moving the Chains

From my list on to conquer anxiety.

Why am I passionate about this?

I was born an anxious person and spent the first 18 years of my life trying to ignore panic attacks and anything to do with mental health. When I finally hit rock-bottom, I joined the CBT group Recovery International and discovered how freeing it was to be in control of my mental health. I now passionately talk and write about mental health, lead a weekly Recovery meeting, and teach CBT techniques to teens. Stigmatized portrayals of mental health in books - hospitalizations, suicide attempts, violent insanity, or being a pathetic burden - kept me from pursuing help, so I wrote my own novel with a positive, realistic take on anxiety and depression.

Em Lyons Bouch Why Em loves this book

I use this book with my teen groups and have seen them take control of their stress, drama, and anger. Power Your Mind takes the CBT tools and techniques that I love so much from Recovery International, and applies them to young people. The workbook features colorful comic pages and high school characters who apply the tools to situations relevant to modern teens. The conversational writing, journaling activities, and clear progression of the key concepts make the workbook perfect to do alone or in a group setting.

Why am I passionate about this?

My love of helping others to heal started early. From the garden I started when I was 8-years-old to the baby ducks I found a home for when I was 10, I have always been passionate about nurturing life. I feel deep empathy for the complexities of others’ pain and am compelled to stand against the context of injustice that causes it. Using this keen understanding of why people suffer, my unique and varied training, rooted ethics, and 25 years of trauma-informed clinical experience, I now help the helpers release what they don't want, recover their energetic bandwidth, and grok a socially conscious life of overflowing joy.

Jodi's book list on to teach teens how to love themselves

Jodi Aman Why Jodi loves this book

Love is a word that not many of us understand, but Buscaglia explains it so well. When people use the word "love," they express their understanding of love at that moment. There is no universal definition of love. Sometimes teens don’t know if they love themselves because it is not tangible. This book helps them know that they are worthy of that love. Love changed my life when I was in high school. It helped me understand myself and influenced my life purpose: to be kind and in solidarity with people. When I work with teens, they often feel untethered by not having, and not knowing, their purpose. In my book, I teach how important a goal is to feel good about yourself, and setting one is much simpler than you think it is! It helps motivate them to get over their anxiety.
