I'd heard about this famous book many years before I actually got around to reading it. What I loved about this book was its originality.

I am always reminded about Orwell's book whenever I hear phrases like ‘ thought police’ or ‘big brother’, which have become part of our everyday language. Probably one of the most influential books ever written. For me, the message of Orwell’s book is that the State will always win.

I love this book for Shin’s exploration of extremes ‘below the pale.’ In it, the most engaging drama is focused on the ‘within’ vice the ‘without.’ What happens when a being’s duty and ultimate purpose come into conflict with their personal desires?

Shin takes the contested space of these interpersonal relationships to another level, because they involve mortals and supernatural beings—angels and humans! The other intriguing theme is the personal struggles for balance and harmony in an extremely complex society which provides compelling context for engaging storytelling, making it a highly recommended and relevant read for today’s world! You definitely need to add this wonderful book to your TBR pile!

A wonderful, dreamlike story, and who doesn’t like to dream? Urquhart’s resplendent prose brought an incredible life story to life for me. The extreme setting was brilliant—rural Saskatchewan, the dark, the cold—the isolation!

I was drawn into the personal world of the main character, Emer, whose introspective journey of recollection moved seamlessly through memory’s timeless realms. My reading experience was just as immersive and engaging as Emer’s reflective journey was for her. Urquhart, the dream weaver, delivers an unforgettable character on an amazing ride while also exploring some the most powerful, world-shaping themes of the last century, such as colonial expansion, technology-driven change, and the unseen forces which seek to divide us.

Even though I’m prone to memory lapses from time to time, I won’t forget this one!

It would be the most extreme of criminal acts for this beloved book not to be my ‘list topper!’ Reading this book instilled an instant love of good fantasy storytelling in me early on. It defines the fantasy genre, exemplifying the absolute best extremes in great world-building, characters, and epic storytelling.

Tolkien set the high bar I strive for in all areas in my own writing with one of the most memorable stories in one of the most unforgettable worlds of all time … and he managed to pull it all off within the context of a single book! No matter how many times I go back and re-read this one, I find something new to cherish, and you will too!

I used this book to relieve the boredom of a long daily commute.

Instead of looking out of a train window at the same old scenery I'd passed a thousand times before, I was now taken to a dystopian society in which everything which I had taken for granted about family life was turned upside down. Where humans are manufactured to a specification instead of being born. A new pseudo religion where everyone makes the sign of the ‘T’, to signify their devotion to the original Ford Model T, which was the first vehicle to be manufactured on an assembly line.

This book offers practical strategies and tools to boost creativity and foster a more fulfilling work experience by encouraging innovative thinking and problem-solving.

It promotes a human-centered approach, emphasizing empathy and understanding in the workplace. By applying design thinking principles, you can create a more enjoyable and productive environment for yourself and your colleagues.

I absolutely adore this book. This is a huge thing to say, but I'd probably rank it among my favorites of the last five years. Although the focus is heavily on anxiety and depression, it clearly sets out a fantastic strategy for keeping yourself well and energized. It’s beautifully written; each point is illustrated by a real and emotive story, bringing it to life. You feel your way through this book. I haven't recommended a book to so many people ever.

Johann Hari has a genuine connection to the topic, and it feels like he puts his heart and soul into every word. Rarely do I read something so educational and yet so gripping.
