I appreciate authors who do not sugar-coat but give it to you as is, warts and all. Pfeffer is definitely one of those. Candid, insightful, pragmatic—these words come to mind when I think about this book.
It felt like a conversation between two adults instead of someone preaching, selling, or patronizing. I also like the comprehensiveness of the approach, showing the good, the bad, and the ugly. My bias towards evidence- and science-based advice also played a part in picking this book.

I have always had so-called “authority problems.” It wasn’t the people; it was the rigidity that got to me. I loved reading it as much as I enjoy good fiction. It is a gripping tale of protagonists who are very human, inventive, sensitive, and sometimes a bit of drama queens. I listened to this book while on my distance runs in the evenings and weekends. The story format made the book easy to follow even while running, and listening to the audiobook (I’m typically a visual reader and prefer physical books). The biggest takeaways for me were reminders of the qualities and character traits that make a great leader (or coach).
It was enlightening to learn about the ‘coach’ behind so many of the successful businesses (like Apple) that we read about today. It makes you think—“Would you rather be in the CEO seat, or the CEO’s coach?”
