I appreciate authors who do not sugar-coat but give it to you as is, warts and all. Pfeffer is definitely one of those. Candid, insightful, pragmatic—these words come to mind when I think about this book.
It felt like a conversation between two adults instead of someone preaching, selling, or patronizing. I also like the comprehensiveness of the approach, showing the good, the bad, and the ugly. My bias towards evidence- and science-based advice also played a part in picking this book.

Pfeffer’s no-bullshit “let’s see what’s really happening” accounts of organizational reality left me wanting more. We all want positive messages (myself included), but the truth is more important.

We enjoyed reading Magnetic Nonsense because of the way it calls out the corporate bullshit bingo and challenges the management trends that are dominating organizations across the world.
For me, AK, it even challenges some of my own perceptions of concepts that I have spent a lot of time on at work—for instance, cultural values—which was refreshing and thought-provoking. I thought it was a fun read too, and I like that the book’s points and arguments are based on a collection of research, data, and case studies. The author is aggressively passionate about cutting the rubbish and enabling a better work future for all.
The reading experience felt a little uncomfortable for me (because it forced me to reconsider some of my beliefs) in the best and most inspirational way possible, and therefore, I absolutely recommend this book.

I am an organizational psychologist interested in how leadership decision-making influences organizational culture. There is nothing more gratifying when you are reading your own books to a group of children to see that they are eager to know what is going to happen next. My top priority is to create a story that is a page-turner. My second wish is to include social topics that provoke ideas and questions. After I read to a group of schoolchildren, I like to encourage them to discuss the themes in the story; the children are always keen to give their views. Nonetheless, adding social topics to my children’s books needs to evolve naturally; ultimately, for me, the story is king!
I bought this book in a charity shop to help me maintain my knowledge of French! I deliberately chose a children’s book because my level of French is modest, but I don’t really need a reason to pick up a Charlie Brown book. Charles M Schultz created an entire world of personalities with the peanut characters. They began life as a comic strip which makes it perfect for dipping in and out of, sometimes just for one joke! Beneath the humour and childlike simplicity, there are complex topics like mental wellbeing and self-esteem, all delivered via fiendishly clever punchlines. Like all the best illustrators, Schultz is able to convey emotion and energy with a few strokes of his pen. The Charlie Brown books are works of genius, in any language.
I have always loved short stories for the way they pull readers into a complete universe and leave a lasting impact, all in a much shorter span than a novel. This is what makes them special! I love when an author presents an indelible image to recall later, or a passage that makes me go back to roll the words over my tongue again, or a turn of events that leaves me heartsore, or filled with longing, or purpose, or appreciation. Often, these shorter glimpses leave a longer impact because they are required to get and keep attention quickly. And the really good short stories do exactly that.
Although Tove Jansson’s characters are diverse in age, position, and location, each one is immediately knowable in her masterful short fiction.
