I have been fascinated with peopleās minds since probably my second psychology class in college. It was when I heard a professor say that all creatives were crazy. I argued that one with her. You donāt have to be creative to be crazy; trust me on this, I was right. Yes, many gifted people are borderline, and there really are savants in this world, but I truly believe they are rare. So, I have studied and been up close and personal with people who have psychological issues. Iāve also met some fascinating people who have managed to become successful. Others, not so much.
This book didnāt start out in the usual way. That in itself grabbed my attention. Itās a thriller, so I expect the first paragraph at least to pull me in. It didnāt grab me the way most do; it slowly sucked me in until I found myself not wanting to put it down.
The two main characters seemed to be at odds. One wanting to help and one refusing to speak. I donāt understand not trying to find answers that keep me silent. It must be the curiosity that kept me reading. Because the woman could speak. At least she could at one time. Either it was something traumatic, or it was just plain stubbornness. Or was I missing the entire point? Always an option.Ā

Growing up in theatre, I was completely immersed in plays, which tend to be deep dives of the human psyche, and I latched on to those examinations like a dog with a bone. But if we pull back the curtain, and really take a raw look, we see that nothing is exempt from smudges of ugliness. I love love love an unreliable narrator! Especially when that narrator is a beautiful, elegant woman who turns out to have the ugliest soul imaginable. I think as a whole, our society tends to be extra afraid when they see conniving evil existing in a femaleās mind, especially when sheās physically beautiful and well spoken.
At certain points in this book, I found myself weirdly rooting for Amy and chomping at the bit to see how far her ācrazyā would take her. The twists and turns kept me racing through this book and left me wondering at the end, āWhat happens to them now?!ā

I write speculative fiction books that feature hidden or secret locations. I enjoy writing about closed communities where different rules apply, and they are less susceptible to outside intervention. Places where those in power can āget away with thingsā. I base the topography on real locations and adapt them for my purposes. I can visualise the locations, which are an amalgam of the real and the imaginary. For consistency, I draw maps incorporating real physical landmarks.
When in unfamiliar settings, people often feel isolated. This makes it easier to portray them as exposed or insecure, creating an atmosphere of fear or suspicion and opening up plot possibilities.
I was intrigued by how the author creates such a strong sense of place in a single house in a story told mostly by the reclusive owner, Ted, and his cat, a man suspected of the abduction and murder of a child.
I loved the tricks, traps, and changes of direction and the slow revelation of what is really happening. When you eventually discover the truth, it comes as no surprise; the fun is in the journey and the catās observations of Ted.

In this novel, the second wife thinks sheās got it goinā on with the first wifeās ex, but things are not as they seem (are they ever in domestic thrillers, or real life??) I got a vicarious kick out of the two wivesā scheming and revenge-lust, and the dry humor laced throughout the story had me snickering with snarky delight!

When we speak in real life, much of what we say out loud doesn't have any real meaning. But when authors write, each word a character says must convey meaning to drive the scene forward. The words must exhibit some form of informationāemotion, advancement of an idea, or even be the action itselfāotherwise, they're just wasted words on the page. The true challenge of writing dialogue is to convey as much as possible with as few words as possible. I love a book in which I'm yearning for specific characters to return just so I can hear the carefully crafted, intelligent, and tight words they employ when speaking, especially when two characters are verbally dueling.
