One of the most compelling aspects of the psychological or domestic thriller genre is the exploration of the horrors that go on inside the lives of ordinary people and this thriller is no exception.

It’s even called Behind Closed Doors! It’s a great title and perfectly captures the theme of the book – how a seemingly ordinary couple are caught up in a horrifyingly abusive relationship. It’s unsettling from the first chapter and only gets worse.

But like driving past a motorway pile-up, you can’t stop looking, desperately hoping there’s a happy ending in sight.

This is just the kind of twisty/turny bordering on very disturbing domestic-thriller book that I like to read. I was glued to the pages and I found myself regularly trying to figure out the plot twists, etc. That’s one of my favorite things when reading a book of this type and hoping (praying) I got it right when all is revealed. Another regular favorite author of mine, of whose books I have read many.

Holy crap, this book. It’s one of those you gulp down in one sitting, then go back and read for a second time to find all the clues you missed. Jack and Grace are the perfect couple. They have charm, elegance, wealth…except her friends wonder why she never seems to answer the phone or be able to meet for coffee even though she doesn’t work, or why she never takes anything with her when she leaves the house, not even a pen. Say what you will about highly commercial fiction, but no one – and I mean no one – keeps pages turning better than B.A. Paris. She is the only author whose books become glued to my hand until I know what happened. I have kept reading while making dinner, attempting to fold laundry, answering emails, walking the dog, taking out the garbage.
