100 Books Like The Jesus Storybook Bible

When Max Lucado writes–I listen! He's a dream to read, and his books are always full of wisdom and advice. When I saw this children's book by him, I knew I had to get it for my kids, and I was not disappointed. 

The lessons are profound, my kids are engaged, and his writing is, as always, on point. You find God on every page, and the truth of the Gospel of Grace abounds. I couldn't recommend this any more highly than I do here. I'm happy that it is a part of my children's book repertoire.

With gentle rhyming verse, Ellie Holcomb’s Don’t Forget to Remember tells how all creation reminds us of God’s love. Kayla Harren’s beautiful illustrations are more detailed than what is typical in a board book. I also recommend listening to Ellie Holcomb's song by the same title. Be warned though; you may find yourself singing it at any given moment. 

God’s Always Loving You lets children know that God is with them in every situation, whether joyous, frightening, or frustrating. Most of all, he is loving them and working to make things new. The meter is flawless, and the stanzas are sprinkled with just the right amount of alliteration to make it pleasing to read, but not a tongue twister. Toddlers will love to join in on the answer to the question posed in each scenario: God, that’s who! 

This book is short, but it contains a powerful message for children: God created you and loves you - everywhere and always. Despite its economy of words, it can spark deep conversations. The text is a wonderful affirmation for children to take into their hearts. It can be savored, but can also be a quick read on those busy nights when parents are as tired as their listeners during storytime. (For reference, God’s Great Love for You is the same number of words as this recommendation.) 

A Father’s Love by Hannah Holt showcases animal fathers loving and taking care of their young. It culminates with a message of unconditional love on a spread with human fathers: A father’s love is always there. A father’s love is everywhere. Personally, I can’t help but love that she included some less obvious choices of animals such as a marmoset and emu, and that each stanza features a color. I also love the perfect meter, rich language, and the use of similes to describe a father’s love. But...weren’t these book recommendations supposed to be about God’s love? While this book is about “a father’s love,” it can also be used as a springboard to talk about the Father’s love!

I love reading this book with my children because it’s more than just story time; it’s a chance to explore mysteries and discover lessons about resilience and empathy. I read it with my kids at least once a year.

The main character, Gobie, has gone through more than any 12-year old should have to, still, she consistently displays kindness and selflessness. It really challenged me to think about my own life and how I deal with challenges, either gracefully or not so much. 

The book opens up conversations about faith, friendship, and empathy that are great for family talks.

When I read this devotional to my kids in the morning, I really believe it makes a difference in their day (and mine!).. I love the idea that the kids are able to apply scripture to how they are feeling and speak powerful promises from the Lord over their lives, either with me or all by themselves (for the ones who can read).

When I pull this book out, I know that they will learn a lesson, learn a scripture, and think about God in their situation. I know that their hearts are in the right place when this book comes off the book shelf.

This book, like my first recommendation by the same author, is one we read once a year (at Christmas time, of course). The writing makes you feel like you were there when Mary and Joseph took the ride to Jerusalem and delivered the baby Jesus. 

The adventure that the dove has along the way is non-stop excitement and awe. The kids can't wait for the few weeks before Christmas because that's when we crack open this book all over again and read a chapter a night leading up to the big day. It has been a tradition for almost ten years now and counting, and we can't imagine Christmas without the reading of this book.

I enjoyed this book because it was such an exhaustive look at how Jesus is foreshadowed in symbols, types, and prophecies in the Old Testament. No stone is left unturned as he shows how “all roads lead to Christ” and how Christ is revealed in every single book in the Old Testament.

It is very intriguing, well-researched, presented very logically, and contains many great insights. It is not, however, a quick read, but more academic in its presentation.

I recommend this book for people who are already pretty familiar with the Scriptures and want to deepen their knowledge of the Bible, particularly of the Old Testament.

In this book, Robert Gregg focuses on the narratives around a number of key figures in the sacred history of the Judaism, Christianity and Islam. They are “shared stories” because these various writers agreed on most (but not all) of the biographical details of these figures. Indeed, the “rival tellings” often reflect intimate knowledge of each other: the Jewish stories about Mary and Jesus are implicit responses to (and refutations of) Christian beliefs, and the Mary of the Qur’an is a rebuke to both Christian and Jewish versions.
