Book cover of Interference

Mark Terry Author Of Crystal Storm

From my list on science is trying to kill us all.

Why am I passionate about this?

Currently, the world seems concerned that artificial intelligence (AI) will destroy the world or at least put many of us out of jobs. Only a few years ago, a significant part of the population believed that COVID-19 was made in a Chinese laboratory and intentionally or accidentally leashed on the world, killing millions. This isn’t just a theme in tech thrillers; it’s a theme in life. Whether it’s nuclear weapons, genetic engineering, AI, or some other type of technology, there’s always a fear that it’ll do more damage than good and, at its worst, bring an end to the world.

Mark's book list on science is trying to kill us all

Mark Terry Why Mark loves this book

This novel has all the makings of a science fiction novel. But is it? Quantum physicist Matt Bronik is suffering from strange, violent seizures. He doesn’t believe they are tied to his research—studying quantum interference. But when he disappears, his wife Brigid is determined to find him. Is it Matt’s research into the universe’s deepest mysteries that has endangered his life? Is it Chinese competitors, the Department of Defense, or an unscrupulous billionaire? All of the above? None of the above?

Examining these books, it’s clear now that I really like thrillers where there’s science involved (and thrillers in general). I liked how this novel set a series of scientific puzzles in place and then knocked them down one by one. Because no matter how much science is involved, it’s matters of the human heart that can be the most mysterious.

"Readers will fully engage with the well-drawn characters as Parks convincingly reveals the science that buttresses the suspenseful plot. Michael Crichton fans won't want to miss this one." -Publishers Weekly (starred review)

From international bestselling author Brad Parks comes an emotional, heart-pounding thriller that explores the scientific unknown-and one woman's efforts to save her husband from its consequences.

Quantum physicist Matt Bronik is suffering from strange, violent seizures that medical science seems powerless to explain-much to the consternation of his wife, Brigid.

Matt doesn't think these fits could be related to his research, which he has always described as benign…

Book cover of Day

Jeanne McWilliams Blasberg Author Of Daughter of a Promise

From my list on books that utilize COVID in the plot.

Why am I passionate about this?

I am an author who also penned a novel during the pandemic, with a timeline that stretched into the first six months of the pandemic–against the advice of my agent and the publishing industry at large. I know many authors choose not to write about intense political and social happenings, but that “life will never be the same again” feeling was something I couldn’t avoid. The pandemic threw people together and kept us apart at the same time. I was intensely interested in its incubator effect as well as the silo aspect quarantining had on all of our lives.

Jeanne's book list on books that utilize COVID in the plot

Jeanne McWilliams Blasberg Why Jeanne loves this book

As if relationships between siblings and spouses aren’t already complicated enough, Cunningham throws the isolation and distance of COVID into the mix.

I love this author’s ability to turn extremely authentic and simple domestic dramas occurring on one day into revelatory ideas about child-rearing and the expectations family members have of one another. A generation of young parents, their inquisitive children, the devotion of a brother and sister, and an infatuation between brothers-in-law are the subjects of this well-paced work.

The effect of the pandemic on a marriage, on family members' psyches, and the aftermath of one of their deaths is written with tenderness and insight. This is a fabulous read depicting the new age in which we live.

Book cover of The Housemaid

Roberta Gately Author Of The Ambassador's Wife

From my list on mystery and thrillers with unexpected twists turns.

Why am I passionate about this?

I am a long-time ER nurse, aid worker, and writer, and I have long been fascinated by true crime/mysteries; much of that interest honed in the ER, where I was often stumped when patient injuries or recollections of witnesses didn’t quite add up. As amateur detectives, we ER nurses often hounded detectives with our own theories, and in one especially big murder case, we had figured out exactly what had happened and who the real killer was before the detectives did. I am also a voracious reader and love a good mystery/thriller to take me away from real life, except when I am solving real life crimes on Dateline.

Roberta's book list on mystery and thrillers with unexpected twists turns

Roberta Gately Why Roberta loves this book

This was my first Freida McFadden book, and I was drawn in from the start and though I wasn’t sure how I felt about the narrator (the maid) or the husband and wife who hired her; I love a main character who makes me cringe and that she was the housekeeper privy to the owners’ secrets kept me guessing.

The prologue set me up for an ending that I never saw coming. Is she a housemaid or something else? I read this in one sitting!

Book cover of The Marriage Secret

L.A. Larkin Author Of Next Girl Missing

From my list on suspense and mystery about women who fight back.

Why am I passionate about this?

My interest in gaslighting began when I watched the movie, Gaslight, starring Ingrid Bergman. Until then, I hadn’t understood how someone who appears charming and caring can use someone’s love to control, manipulate and undermine them, to such an extent that the victim doubts their own perception of reality. I started to read accounts of victims of gaslighting. I then realized that someone I knew was going through this. Fiction is a powerful means of creating awareness of issues and injustices, and I hope my new series character, Sally Fairburn, will inspire women to seize back their lives.

L.A.'s book list on suspense and mystery about women who fight back

L.A. Larkin Why L.A. loves this book

Holly appears to have a perfect life, living in a beautiful house, lunching with friends, married to handsome Zach, a hospital doctor.

But gradually we discover that Holly’s life is one of fear: she is a victim of gaslighting. If Holly dares to cross Zach, the cruel, sadistic narcissist shows itself. One of the chapters that sent shivers down my spine was when Zach punishes Holly when she is at her most vulnerable – in the birthing suite.

He sabotages the delivery of their daughter, causing Holly to need a C-section, all because, earlier, Holly left some shoes on the floor and Zach tripped over them.

For much of the book we wonder if Holly will ever be free of her abusive husband, but the author creates a wonderful ending which had me clapping my hands with delight.

Book cover of Take Your Breath Away

Sue Jaskula Author Of Tangled Lies

From my list on romantic suspense with real-life characters.

Why am I passionate about this?

My administrative career covered a mix of legal and hospital work which provided a wealth of real-life scenarios to fuel my own convoluted story ideas. Thrilled to take early retirement and pursue a writing career, I have since published five romantic suspense novels. I strive to produce quality stories on par with the countless amazing romantic suspense authors I have enjoyed since my teen years. Storyline prompts surround us. A dark bunkie, screaming neighbor, or even an oddly shaped bag of garbage can trigger my suspicion. My favorite spot to walk is the peaceful shores of Lake Huron, where my twisted imagination soars, and my best stories come to life.

Sue's book list on romantic suspense with real-life characters

Sue Jaskula Why Sue loves this book

I love writing and reading twists that keep the reader guessing along with the characters.

The main character in Take Your Breath Away is accused of killing his wife years before. Once he has moved away from the town of innuendos and restarted his life, what appears to be his long-lost wife reappears, leaving him and the reader asking, “what the heck?”

It takes a lot to keep me guessing until the end of the book and this one did just that. More emotional than romantic, it’s a love story gone wrong, thrilling suspense that will keep you turning the pages long into the night.

Jessica Anya Blau Why Jessica loves this book

You’re thrown into the world of grunge music here with a couple, Jane and Elijah, who meet in a chat room (historical fiction!).

Soon enough, the couple is worldwide famous, something Jane had always wanted. Jane, who writes the songs, is misunderstood and underappreciated, while Elijah takes center stage. That’s okay with Jane until Elijah disappears, and Jane is heartbroken and lost while also being demonized by their fans.

This is a wonderfully compelling page-turner with likeable characters and some dislikeable ones, too.

Book cover of The Paris Widow

James L'Etoile Author Of Face of Greed

From my list on books with kickass women characters.

Why am I passionate about this?

As an author, it’s all about character for me. I like to find characters doing the unexpected, finding strength when they thought all was lost, and fighting back when it seems hopeless. I write these kinds of characters, and often it’s a woman in the lead role where they face additional challenges and obstacles in their path—solely because of their gender. Working for 29 years in some of the toughest prisons in the country, I worked with strong, kickass women. I can't but help for some of their influence to bleed out on the page. I know you’ll enjoy these titles as much as I did.

James' book list on books with kickass women characters

James L'Etoile Why James loves this book

Domestic suspense is having a moment. These aren’t your “damsel in distress” stories where a woman waits for someone to save her. I like women who bounce back hard after a setback, and this book is exactly that.

Without spoilers, when Stella’s husband goes missing after a bombing, she can’t accept the fact she has to start over. I love the fact she wants answers, and when she doesn't get them, she strikes out on her own.

Kimberly Belle creates strong female lead characters in her books, and if you’re like me, they keep you turning the pages. Kimberly is always one of my must-buy authors—The Paris Widow is no exception.

Book cover of No One Will Miss Her

Arthur Herbert Author Of The Bones of Amoret

From my list on endings that make you go, “Whoooooaaaa”.

Why am I passionate about this?

I was born and raised in a small town in Texas, where I worked on offshore oil rigs as a bartender, a landscaper at a trailer park, and a social worker before attending medical school. I’ve worked as a trauma and burn surgeon for nineteen years. Living an exciting life has made me a better writer (like Hemingway said, “To write about life, first you must live it”), but it has little to do with my passion for mystery/suspense. I read this genre for the best reason, presumably the same as yours: I’m just a huge fan. I hope you enjoy these books as much as I did!

Arthur's book list on endings that make you go, “Whoooooaaaa”

Arthur Herbert Why Arthur loves this book

I’m not only a mystery/suspense writer but also a fan of the genre, as I read or listen to about forty whodunnits a year, just under one a week. I tend to read these books with one eye toward the superficial story, yes, but I also study them from a technical standpoint, saying to myself, “Oh, I see what the author did there,” “Man, that was a nice way to frame that conflict,” or, “What the hell? I think the author wrote that chapter by getting drunk and taping crayons to their feet.” The point I’m trying to make is that the plot devices and metaphors tend to blur together after a while.

But this book? Man, it stood out. I mean, Kat Rosenfield had me hook, line, and sinkers with the book’s opening line, “My name is Lizzie Ouellette, and if you’re reading this, I’m already dead.” It's…

Book cover of A Passionate Sisterhood

Elizabeth Buchan Author Of Woodspring

From my list on pushing you to be bold and brave and to never give up.

Why am I passionate about this?

A writer is made in many ways. From an early age, I had my nose in a book and spent any free time I had going to and from the local library. ‘Here she comes,’ said the librarian a little wearily as I was insatiable. For me, reading opened the door into alternative ways of seeing and of being. During the day, I put on the school uniform and learned about maths and why tax is necessary. Back home, I plunged into every kind of adventure, from the exotic and the frightening to the quietly reassuring stories of families who stuck together. It turned me into a writer.

Elizabeth's book list on pushing you to be bold and brave and to never give up

Elizabeth Buchan Why Elizabeth loves this book

Who washed the socks and boiled the eggs for the so-called Lake Poets? Or any poet, for that matter? The answer is almost certainly their sisters, wives and daughters.

This is an account of the gifted, long-suffering, often tormented, coterie of women who laboured in the shadow of Wordsworth, Coleridge and Southey. Connected by blood as well as marriage, the women were very different, but each was as trapped as the other by their gender.

The emotional fallout resulted in illnesses, neurosis, and deep unhappiness. Like her father, Sara Coleridge was an opium addict. Dorothy Wordsworth was consumed by love for her brother, and Emily Southey was a depressive.

I was very struck by the struggles to gain expression and to be treated as intellectual equals. Their stories made me determined never to be hampered from writing my own. I thought of those women as I wrote one of my…

What is this book about?

Wordsworth, Coleridge and Southey have become such a literary myth that we are used to looking at the Lake District solely through their eyes. But the story for the women who loved and surrounded them - Dorothy and Mary Wordsworth, Sarah Coleridge and their daughters - was very different. Based on necessity, the extended family-type group they formed was a far cry from the harmonious rustic idyll illustrated by their male counterparts. Kathleen Jones looks at their letters and journals in this illuminating account of their lives - the passionate attachments and jealousies, unwanted pregnancies and children's death, drug addiction…

Book cover of The Paris Wife

Marianne C. Bohr Author Of When Paris Whispers

From my list on transporting you to Paris.

Why am I passionate about this?

France claimed me early, when I was a teenager. A French major, a Rotary scholarship year in the Loire Valley, and decades of return visits later, I'm still not done with this gorgeous country. Since retirement, my husband and I spend at least several weeks there every year, and in 2011, we lived in France for three months during an adult gap year. My third book, a novel set in Paris and Normandy, is the most recent evidence that France and her food, wine, culture, literature, art and landscapes, have never loosened their hold on me.

Marianne's book list on transporting you to Paris

Marianne C. Bohr Why Marianne loves this book

Paris in the 1920s and Hemingway—what more could I want?

I'll admit I'm not a devoted fan of Hemingway's prose, but I've always been captivated by the man himself, and this novel more than satisfied that fascination. What unfolds is a love story as beautiful as it is devastating: Hemingway and his first wife, Hadley, set against the glittering, restless backdrop of 1920s Paris.

The author's prose is quietly stunning, and her historical rendering of the era feels fully alive. But it's Hadley who stayed with me. Watching her fight to hold her marriage together, to hold him together, is at times almost unbearable. She's drawn with such sympathy and complexity: a woman of real intelligence and grace, loving someone who was always partly beyond reach.
