Why read it?

14 authors picked The Housemaid as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

Another book that I couldn't stop reading. Freida McFadden really came up with a brilliant twist in this story and challenged the reader to really question what it means to be a victim of domestic abuse. There are very often two sides to every story and the truth might not always be as simple as it appears. The writing was immersive and quick-paced, making for an excellent "binge read".

This was my first Freida McFadden book, and I was drawn in from the start and though I wasn’t sure how I felt about the narrator (the maid) or the husband and wife who hired her; I love a main character who makes me cringe and that she was the housekeeper privy to the owners’ secrets kept me guessing.

The prologue set me up for an ending that I never saw coming. Is she a housemaid or something else? I read this in one sitting!

This is the first of a three-book series. If you’re like me, you may as well take advantage of any discount for the entire series. After starting this book, I wanted to read them all. I loved the formula of the plot. It drew me into the characters, leading me to an opinion about their standing—among the good people or the villains, only to pull the rug out from under me, crashing everything I thought about everyone up to that moment. Nothing was what it seemed.

But wait! Mystery loomed until the last page. The final twist was like the…

Wow! I love a good mystery with twists and turns, but I was totally unprepared for The Housemaid. It's a riveting story and I couldn't wait to turn the next page and find more thrills. I've read every book in the Housemaids series by McFadden, and each one is as great as the one before. I don't know how she keeps coming up with these great plot lines, but Im happy she does!

One of the most gripping stories I’ve read in a long time, this book sticks with you long after you put it down. I raced through it in less than six hours, unable to put it down until I reached the end, which, of course, I never saw coming.

From the vivid descriptions to the expertly crafted characters to the unrelenting suspense, I was blown away by this book and absolutely cannot wait to read more work by this author. What surprised me the most were the moments of comic relief which at times were enough to get me to…

I was immediately hooked when I found out the female protagonist was an ex-prisoner. She was guilty, too, and she wasn’t seeking redemption. Her motive was REVENGE–far more powerful and infinitely more intriguing.

I never guessed the twists McFadden put in her fabulous psychological thriller. I had never read anything like itthe characters were so fresh, the plot was so intriguing, and the ending was so unexpected! This story takes the control issue from the popular movie Sleeping with the Enemy to an entirely new level. Every time I think of this title, I remember the story. Vividly.…

The troubling doubts about her involvement shattered the family, forever driving…

Twists and turns abound in this first of a series novel that had me rushing through grocery shopping so I could get back to it.

Though not a fan of first person, I loved the main character so much that I went with it. It’s a thriller, it’s a romance, it’s a character study all rolled into one, and I have already finished the next in the series because the housemaid is…well…crazy like a fox, and I can relate!

Such a fun read, I have suggested it to my friends who run book clubs. Every time I thought, “Ah ha!”…

Everyone can relate to an unlikeable employer. I love a beautiful home and a perfect life. This book has it all. It’s beautiful and horrific at the same time.

If you love descriptive narrative, this is the book for you. It has some house porn and high fashion. Frieda paints the perfect picture and then unravels the unsavory truths.

The housemaid is damaged yet likable. There is nothing like rooting for the underdog, and the housemaid is just that person. I loved this book.

Here is a harmonious blend of story, character, and an unforeseen twist, where the reader is left questioning who the baddie might be all the way to the surprising end.

It’s a story about toxic relationships, the dark side of marriage, and all those juicy, scandalous details that make for a page-turner. At its core, this psych thriller is about people taking control of their lives. Whether the law is on their side or not, they plot against the hidden malevolence lurking behind suburbia’s locked doors and those pristine houses with flawless façades.

This book marked my introduction to this…

I love this page-turner because it makes me curious from the start: What kind of strange family is this where the main character has to work as a housemaid?

I empathized the whole time and couldn't stop reading. Especially because everything only took place in one location: in a single house! The whole time, I was wondering what was behind it all. I would have preferred to write the story myself.

Exactly to my taste!
