I almost didn't read this book because of the subtitle (A paranormal, midlife rom-com that will make you laugh out loud!). But I'm glad I did, because it was refreshing, different and made me smile. I liked the main character's inner dialogue and her interactions with her nephew. And the paranormal mystery was fun, not scary. If you like a mix of ghosts and romance that is light and fun to read, you'll like this book.

This was just what I needed to read - a fun, fast-reading romance with captivating banter and characters who were caring people who did kind things (despite what they believed about each other at the beginning). I loved that Liesel, the main female character was intelligent and Cooper respected it - thought it didn't stop him from being attracted to her or ribbing her. And the oversized dad and goofy brothers were great additions to the story.

The only thing I hate worse than Christmas is Cooper Freaking Kellogg.Liesel:My reason for hating Christmas is simple: my mom loved Christmas, and now she’s gone. My reason for hating Cooper Kellogg is also simple: he annoys the jingle out of me. The all-star, all-ego player is on the injured list, and—lucky me!—we’re assigned to work on a special project together. Between awkward team events, a Christmas escape room, and some very inconvenient mistletoe, Coop and I are getting way too close for comfort. Then we’re trapped in a blizzard overnight, and Coop’s cocky grin slips, showing the man behind the…

Book cover of Unsticky

Clodagh Murphy Author Of For Love or Money

From my list on fake relationship romcoms.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’m an Irish author of romantic comedy and I’m passionate about the genre. I love smart, intelligent romcoms that are full of fun, with witty dialogue, sharp observations, and a great spark between the main characters. One of my favourite romance tropes is the fake relationship, because I’m not a fan of instalove and pretending to be in a relationship gives the characters a reason to spend a lot of time together until they gradually realise they’re perfect for each other. It also offers so much scope for comedy, with seemingly mismatched characters thrown together in awkward situations. Fun times guaranteed!

Clodagh's book list on fake relationship romcoms

Clodagh Murphy Why Clodagh loves this book

I’m a huge fan of Sarra Manning’s brand of smart, witty romance with a bit of an edge. In Unsticky Grace enters into a "Pretty Woman" type relationship with wealthy art dealer Vaughan, and it has everything you could want in a romance - a relatable heroine, a hot alpha male hero, and great chemistry between the characters. Both characters are flawed and damaged, but they bring out the best in each other and it’s a joy to watch their relationship change from a business transaction to something much more, until, in classic Pretty Woman fashion, they end up rescuing each other. It’s all handled with Sarra’s trademark wit and intelligence, and it’s also very sexy!

Mhairi McFarlane is a go-to author for me. I love her witty turn of phrase, and her characters and settings are always so real and relatable. Laurie is a great female protagonist, with a meaningful career and a loyal circle of friends, and I like that she’s shown to have a full, rounded life outside of her romantic relationships. There’s sparky dialogue, emotional depth, a very hot leading man, and fantastic chemistry between the two leads that fizzes off the page.

Joanna Bolouri is one of my favourite romcom writers because she’s so damn funny! Her books are genuinely hilarious and totally live up to the ‘laugh-out-loud’ tag. I love them all, but this is my favourite. Emily is a great character, and Ethan is so cute and adorable. I’m a sucker for a player with hidden depths, and the fact that he’s younger than Emily too is a refreshing change. Throw in a Christmas break with her eccentric family, and you’re guaranteed oodles of fun.

Jessica Cunsolo Why Jessica loves this book

When I think of the perfect, fun, poolside read, this book is the first to pop into my head.

The Unhoneymooners follows Olive, who ends up having to fake date a man she hates while on their fake honeymoon in Hawaii. I love those tropes (fake relationships, enemies to lovers, forced proximity) but on top of that, this book is laugh-out-loud hilarious.

I was giggling in the pool the entire time I read this, and the light, fast-paced, engaging vibe makes this book the perfect poolside read.

Why are we passionate about this?

A sidekick is someone who knows you better than you know yourself. Someone who will travel 750 miles on your wedding day, and then help you escape out of a window before you make a huge mistake. We write books that reward every struggle with a happy ending because life is not always kind. We create characters who inspire us to keep laughing and encourage readers to laugh with us. Here’s hoping everyone has a humorous sidekick in his or her life.

Michelle Angelle Why Michelle loves this book

Not going to lie, we’re in a fit of giggles just thinking about these hilariously raunchy sidekicks. This book is three-fourths slapstick-middle school boy humor with one-fourth romance thrown in. The love connection wouldn’t even happen if not for the hijinks of the sidekicks. When the family unit travels in an RV across the country in search of great hotdogs, it reunites the spark between old childhood sweethearts. Who wouldn’t want a road trip with a dad who cusses presidents' names, and a goofy brother who makes inexcusable references to whale sperm? Love is simply inevitable.

Michelle Angelle Why Michelle loves this book

We are total suckers for British humor. Give us a smashing bloke or a cheeky heroine, and we are all in. Mhairi McFarlane weaves together a friends-to-lovers trope with a second-chance love story. In this novel, readers explore the fantasy of the one who got away along with the complex problems that happen in real life, such as failing marriages and self-doubt. You’ll fall in love with the main character, Rachel, but it is through her friend relationships and inner monologues that you see her development. She isn’t a damsel in distress. No, she is a strong female character with a tight group of friends who you quickly fancy. It doesn’t hurt that there is a leading man sure to make you swoon.
