60 Books Like Effective Modern Coaching

I’m not a fan of conflict (Who is?!), so I found this book incredibly helpful. I really liked the way the authors broke things down into simple buckets. For example, rather than thinking, ‘Why did that innocent little, tiny comment wind me up so much? I must be a muppet!’ It helped me to see the principles at play and, therefore, what I could do to keep thriving.  

I use many of the techniques described here on a daily basis. They have helped me to stay true to what is important whilst maintaining rapport, to seek out valuable feedback without getting bent out of shape, and to deliver difficult messages more compassionately and effectively. 

I found this book wonderfully confronting! We’ve all heard the cliché that when life gives you lemons, you should make lemonade (grrr!), but this book helped me figure out HOW. It provoked me to reframe problems simply as contexts and celebrate constraints as clarity, helping me move forward.

Although it is very much a business book—full of plenty of corporate examples (I particularly loved the ones about growing crops and selling beer!)—I’ve found techniques like the ‘propelling questions’ useful more broadly, too. 

I loved the leftfield ideas in this book, combined with Pippa’s honest tone. It gave me a fascinating glimpse into what it is like to be a professional improv comic—Pippa is super honest about the highs and the lows. But what I really loved were the transferable skills. For example, she’s really insightful about how improv folks are very purposeful when using the word ‘and’ to build a scene.

Pippa really made me think about when I say ‘yes’ or ‘no’, why I say it and what the consequences are. It’s been a real game changer to help me think about when I say ‘yes’ and take on too much, or conversely when I say ‘no’ and block possibilities. 

I found this both hilarious and life-affirming. I found it hard when my kids were small to balance career and family, and this book felt like a best friend, saying, ‘Yeah, I know, bonkers, isn’t it? But it’s all OK.’ I’m a huge fan of humor as being like a pair of oven gloves to help us handle the hot stuff, normalize our experiences, and build rapport with other people.

This book did exactly that and more. Warning! It’s quite irreverent and cheeky—which I absolutely loved…

I demolished this book in an afternoon. I loved the conversational tone and simple, actionable takeaways. I have several pages earmarked and phrases circled throughout my own copy.

I have taken note of many of the example questions provided in the book to take and use in meetings and events. 

I love frameworks. Especially ones that make simple and clarifying distinctions about our complex inner life. That’s exactly what Chamine has done with this book. When I read this book in 2012 and completed the accompanying free online assessment to identify my saboteurs, I was greatly humbled by the sobering accuracy of how I self-sabotage.

While reading the book, I was engrossed in the combination of logic, science, and stories helping to illuminate how and why we all have a unique mix of these universal saboteurs: Controller, Stickler, Hyper-Achiever, Restless, Hyper-Rational, Victim, Avoider, Pleaser, Hyper-Vigilant. I learned how to identify when I was coming from a place of self-sabotage and what to do to overcome unhelpful habits, (i.e., strengthen my PQ muscles).

Everyone loves Netflix. But I love their story more. If the conditions are right, your business could look very different. The Netflix way showed me the importance of the statement ‘hire good people and get out of their way'. Whilst that comment is simple, building a company that allows that is more complicated.

This book challenged the way I viewed organizational structure and innate bureaucracies. Reed describes some simple philosophies that provide a contrast to the status quo. I love the challenge of this book to traditional success.

Nelson believes that “how we view our work and how we do our work matters a great deal more than we might imagine” (14). A common tendency for me has been to view Sunday as worship and rest, and then I am off to work on Monday.

Nelson constructively bridges this gap with theological depth and practical counsel. He clarified God’s purposes for work in a way that helped me make the most of it while simultaneously joining God in his work.

Nelson notes how work shapes us; through it, we can shape the world around us and contribute to the common good.
