I read this trilogy in 1998 when I had just finished high school.
Even then, I understood the book presented Frodo as the main hero, but I was always aware that without Sam, Frodo couldn't go far. He was just a gardener in the beginning, but when the books were over, he proved himself and even became the mayor of the Shire.
Seeing a regular guy carrying the main hero on his shoulders is something else. The decisions he made and his forcing himself to do more transformed him into a natural hero and a leader.

Everybody talks about the shock value of this series, but they forget that these books have the greatest and most realistic character developments of all time.
Sansa, Daenerys, and Jon Snow are the most obvious ones, but I chose Jaime because I can relate to him the most. Sometimes everything goes your way, and you feel invincible. But remembering the fall of Jaime keeps my feet on the ground.
I had similar experiences several times when I acted like a jerk because of my job titles before reading his story. Now I never get ahead of myself.

In my opinion the hardest thing to do in life is changing into a person you weren't born to be.
Drizzt was born in darkness and chose to be a hero of light. I was impressed with the way Drizzt fought his way to be good, although the whole world told him he couldn’t. Even today, his story still gives me courage when I decide something isn’t expected from me.
Also, the idea of having a companion panther, like Guenhwyvar, is still something I consider the coolest. This is the reason I played Hunter in my first WoW days.

I found it hard to read a story where I already knew the details. But Arthas’ story feels the same in every format.
The book is so good, I wish it were my first time learning about this story. It is easy to relate to Arthas, someone going a dark way while trying to do the right thing.
Although a good guy going bad is considered a cliché, his transformation was so unexpected and well-written that I didn’t seem to care at all. After reading, I remembered how much I missed the game and played it through one more time.

I read this book in high school and absolutely loved the entire idea, of essentially a prisoner of war escape plan similar to The Great Escape, set in a science fiction universe against the scale and scope of a planet.
I love how the author took a main character that had been so strong and tough through seven previous books and made her vulnerable, gave her new room to grow, and allowed some of her supporting cast to shine as well.

It’s just my favorite trope, that’s all: the character who isn’t what he seems. I love the deception, I love the complications, I love the clues dropped along the way, I love the big reveal. I love the sensation I get when I, the reader, know just a little bit more than the characters do but still feel surprised and wonder when the whole truth is unveiled. When I sit down to write, I know I want to create that exact sensation in my readers.
