Why read it?
5 authors picked Homeland as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?
This book was my first journey into the Underdark, and I swear I could feel the oppressive dark pressing in while reading it.
Drizzt Do’Urden’s struggle hit me harder than any surface-dweller’s tale—here’s someone born into cruelty, yet refusing to accept it as his destiny. The action is fast and cinematic, but what I loved most is the quiet defiance running through every page.
Drizzt isn’t just fighting with blades; he’s fighting for the right to choose who he is. For me, that made the book unforgettable.

For a long time, I had heard Drizzt’s name bandied about. I was so curious about this character that I eventually tracked down the first book in the series that features him, Homeland.
This book was gut-wrenching and really got me to see what it looks like to grow up in an evil society. I loved the character development in the story.
From JP's list on books to read in a dungeon.
When I picked this book up on a whim years ago, I had no idea I was introducing myself to one of the most beloved characters in fantasy literature. As soon as I read the introduction, with its stark descriptions of the lightless world underground and the dangers that lurked around every corner, I knew this was for me.
By the time I encountered Drizzt himself, there was no turning back; I had found the kind of book that I wanted to read without knowing it.

If you love Homeland...
Homeland features one of my favorite characters of all time — Drizzt DuOrden. So, obviously, Homeland was going to appear on this list. R.A. Salvatore certainly knows how to construct a character and spin a narrative that will have the reader hooked from start to finish.
If you’re a fan of dark fantasy, I definitely recommend this book.
There are so many good things to say about the Dark Elf Trilogy but the reason I read it was because my brother gave it to me and said, “You should read this. It’s got lots of good fighting.” The way Salvatore wrote his fights completely engrossed me. And not just me. Heavy readers of fantasy (I’m a lightweight as I split my time between fantasy and historical fiction) say he is one of the best. Sure the fight scenes were fantastical, but Salvatore has a way of grounding them in reality with little things (like Drizzt’s double downward block…
From J. K.'s list on with realistic fight scenes.
