I’ve always had a fascination with prophecies and the ubiquitous role they play in works of fantasy—it’s a tried-and-true literary device, and I don’t think there is another series that embodies the principle of fate better than Eddings’ Belgariad series.

The title of this first book sets that up most perfectly. From the first few pages, I was instantly drawn into this world, which takes the concept of uniquely varied traveling companions to a whole other level.

Not only are the characters all well fleshed out with personalities and motivations that kept me invested the whole way, but the book (and series) was also replete with another thing I love so much about fantasy novels—going on a grand, action-filled journey through numerous, fascinating locations.

What moved me is how much it means to belong to the Acoma estate.

Nacoya with her sharp wisdom, Keyoke with his unyielding honor, Arakasi with his chosen allegiance, even the grey warriors—they all belong to something bigger than themselves. When danger hits, the fear ripples through everyone. When triumph comes, it lifts all of them.

A big draw of the book was seeing people pull together not because they’re supposed to, but because they genuinely care. The Acoma isn’t just a political house; it feels like a place where being needed gives everyone a kind of quiet dignity. 

I listened to the audiobook edition of this story and was completely blown away.

The narration is superb, with the reader performing songs and really making the story come alive, but the prose was just wonderful. Seriously, I would hear lines and think, “Oh my God, I wish I could write like that!”

I haven’t read much fantasy that was written in the past 20 years, but I can see why this is regarded as a modern classic. I loved it and wish he would finally complete the trilogy! 

The Dragonlance series is rightly regarded as a classic of fantasy fiction, but I feel the main trilogy doesn’t hold up quite as well these days as the Legends trilogy that begins with Time of the Twins.

This book has slightly more grown-up writing than other books in the series, and I think the two main characters, Raistlin, the sickly mage, and his physically powerful brother, Caramon, are two of the best ever created.

The plot over the trilogy is really exciting and draws the reader in, with some unexpectedly emotional events and lots of character development. I wanted to be Caramon when I was a youngster, and, actually, I still do!

I picked up The Last Wish after playing the Witcher games and listening to the soundtrack, but what surprised me is how funny it is.

Yes, it is epic fantasy in every sense of the word, but Geralt’s dry humor cuts through the blood and curses, and his conversations with Dandelion had me laughing out loud. What makes it great, though, is how Sapkowski flips fairy tales upside-down, twisting familiar stories into something darker and sharper.

I enjoyed the way morality blurs—there are monsters, sure, but the humans are often MUCH worse. It’s a book that asks hard questions about society under the guise of swords and spells.

David Gemmell has created some legendary characters like Druss the Axeman, but the hero in White Wolf is my favourite of all.

Skilgannon does tend to follow Gemmell’s formula of being a near-indestructible warrior who can defeat multiple enemies without breaking sweat, but, honestly, that’s why I love him so much! I really enjoy a good heroic fantasy novel, and White Wolf and its sequel are two of my absolute favourites ever.

I always compare Gemmell to Scottish rock band AC/DC* – people say they only wrote one album and repeated the formula, but it’s such a GOOD formula that you can’t help loving it! Gemmell’s novels are like that, and I think White Wolf is probably the best of them all. 

*Angus, Malcolm, and Bon were Scottish, so I’m claiming them!

This urban fantasy about angels blew me away. I liked it so much I had to read everything in the series as soon as it was available. It was completely different to anything I had read before in regard to the storyline. It is so well written you can easily picture the characters and the scenes and you feel you are part of the story as you read. Each character is unique and you just want to keep finding out more and more about them.

This is the first in the Blood Jewels series, all of which you will want to read again and again. The characters are so addictive you just want to keep reading about them. The story draws you into a world you can lose yourself in and the way magic works doesn’t rely on spells, but on the strength of the person wielding it. You won’t be able to stop yourself from reading every book in the series. For me, the sign of a good book is it contains a character to fall in love with. This has a few.

This book is filled with a blend of magic, mages, and medieval mysticism! A complete fan of all things medieval, I found this book at the beginning of my jump into world-building. Kurtz’s character development is stellar and taught me to try even harder to develop characters a reader could love or hate. Throughout the entire “Dernyni” series you find many characters that you grow to care deeply about and some you cheer when they meet their demise!

This coming-of-age story centers on Jaxom, a young dragon rider and future lord of a hold, and his bonded dragon Ruth, a rare, small, and often silly white dragon. Jaxom thinks his greatest problem is the bullies who mock him for his status and his dragon’s unusual size, but as he strives to prove his naysayers wrong, he ends up thrown in the middle of political machinations far beyond what he could have dreamed. I love Ruth’s almost childlike nature and his fearless willingness to rise to whatever challenge they faced. Their friendship, and unique relationship with the tiny fire lizards of the land, was charming at every turn.
