Why read it?
5 authors picked The Last Wish as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?
I picked up The Last Wish after playing the Witcher games and listening to the soundtrack, but what surprised me is how funny it is.
Yes, it is epic fantasy in every sense of the word, but Geralt’s dry humor cuts through the blood and curses, and his conversations with Dandelion had me laughing out loud. What makes it great, though, is how Sapkowski flips fairy tales upside-down, twisting familiar stories into something darker and sharper.
I enjoyed the way morality blurs—there are monsters, sure, but the humans are often MUCH worse. It’s a book that asks hard questions about…

The Witcher series is another epic that once you start reading you won’t be able to stop. Although I think some things are lost in translation from Polish to English, it is still gripping and thoroughly enjoyable. Like all fantasy, Sapkowski has created a fascinating world and lore, including language and history.
But where this series excels is with the main character of Geralt—a surly warrior for hire whose emotions are destroyed during the process he was forced to undertake to become a Witcher. But as you get to know Geralt, you realize those emotions are certainly not destroyed, and…

I am recommending this book because it introduces you to The Witcher himself. It is a short story collection easily to be read as I was quickly pulled into the world of The Continent to witness Geralt of Rivia on his adventures, encountering monsters of fathomable horrors and allies along the way.
The book’s dark fantasy aura with hints of political intrigue is what drew me in even more and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

While Henry Cavill’s depiction of Geralt is stellar, the Netflix series is no substitute for the dark, engrossing, and morally grey tale that is The Witcher. For me, The Witcher games and novels were the exact combination of monster hunting, moral quandaries, and somber contemplation that I needed.
It’s no wonder that people describe my books as a modern Witcher! While the main novels are excellent, the short story anthology that started it all is legendary and is a must-read!
From Nicholas' list on fantasy to get lost in a world of magic and monsters.
The book that launched a gaming and now TV empire! And it’s a deliciously dark read, but not your typical fantasy narrative, and instead follows the hero through short stories that build a fun, amazing realm to experience. I really enjoy stories about broken heroes as they struggle to do good in their world, and this series offers this in spades.
From D.'s list on new fantasy worlds.
