This is a magnificently dark and brilliant work of speculative fiction with an absolutely stunning and original premise. The characters are rich, complex, flawed, and magnificent. I don't want to say too much and spoil the experience, but it's horrifying and gorgeous and absolutely not to be missed.

Book cover of Fahrenheit 451

Stefan Bogdanski Author Of All the Shadows

From my list on apocalypse being dark times, but it‘s not the end (and might be fun, too).

Why am I passionate about this?

I‘ve been thinking about the forces that drive humanity together and pull us apart at the same time since my late teens; back then, I started reading the classical dystopian tales. The (perceived) end of time always speaks to me, because I think it‘s in those moments of existential dread that we learn who we really are. That‘s why I like reading (and reviewing) books, and also why those topics are an undertone in my own writings. I do hope you enjoy these 5 books as much as I have.

Stefan's book list on apocalypse being dark times, but it‘s not the end (and might be fun, too)

Stefan Bogdanski Why Stefan loves this book

When I was younger, I wanted to read all the classic dystopies that are there, and this is, of course, one of them.

So I did expect a dystopie—what I didn‘t expect was the emotional impact this book would have on me. I absolutely fell in love with Guy Montag, one of the best protagonists, in my opinion, telling us his story; and there‘s a whole range of side characters that will stick with you long after the ending.

And the ending—don‘t worry, no spoilers here—is something that really stuck with me. Unlike other dystopian stories, this novel leaves the reader on a hopeful note. It might be a dark and bad world, but it‘s not the end, and there is hope.

Such a powerful note to end the book.

Ken Eckert Why Ken loves this book

I teach sci-fi, but reluctantly admit that much sci-fi is, well, bad: formulaic or cheesy geekiness, and impenetrably long book series. I am surprised how well Dick's 1968 novel holds up, and how good it is. What appears to be a formulaic noir-detective pastiche turns into a deeply problematic rumination on what, exactly, is human? In a post-nuclear setting of ruins, few people, and so few animals that consuming them has become horrendously unthinkable, what is left of civilization is augmented by artificial animal pets as well as semi-reanimated human-robot-androids ("andys," renamed "replicants" in the 1982 Bladerunner adaptation). As his job leads him into increasingly thorny ethical decisions, Decker gradually questions how he is any better or distinguished from these various life (life?) forms. The movie is thinky. The book is thinkier. Like any good fiction, "Androids" both entertains and poses complex questions to the reader.

Adam Strassberg Why Adam loves this book

Brave New World is perhaps the little brother to the more famous dystopian novel 1984. I reread this book now at age 57 after last reading it at age 17. As a teenager, I was intrigued by the cool world building and inventive use of eugenics and hypnopaedia. As a mature adult, I was immediately struck by how much the book is a polemic on traditional sexual and romantic morays and also on consumerism and technology. Huxley’s society is focused on comfort, entertainment, pleasure, and immediate gratification. But happiness without suffering has no meaning! Art, pain, love, and other struggles make our human lives hard, but they also give our human lives their meaning.

April McCloud Author Of The Switch

From my list on scifi that make us meditate on our humanity.

Why am I passionate about this?

I have a congenital heart disease in which I go into spontaneous cardiac arrest, and I am now 1% bionic (I have an ICD—defibrillator and pacemaker—implanted). Ever since waking up from that surgery, I’ve changed my perspective on what it means to live in the Venn Diagram overlap of “human” and “machine.” My heart—an organ at the heart of so many metaphors about love and emotion—is not like everyone else’s. It is connected to a battery to keep me alive. I write about what it means to be human to better understand myself.

April's book list on scifi that make us meditate on our humanity

April McCloud Why April loves this book

I’m fairly certain that in this book, Vonnegut incites an apocalypse on humanity in order to prove that human beings are worth saving—and I’m so here for it. He didn’t hold back on who would live and who would die, on what would happen to humanity. And yet, I was enthralled with the interiority and struggles of each and every character—even those that were doomed.

I particularly love non-linear storytelling because it gives us glimpses into the future, only to make us ask questions about ourselves in the present. Getting to the end only made me want to start back at the beginning so I could linger a bit longer with humanity on the brink.
