100 Books Like The Staff Engineer's Path

I like tools and tactics, but when reading, I also like engaging stories. This book is loaded with them, offering a raw and authentic approach to leadership.

I liked how Willink and Babin pull valuable business takeaways from intense experiences on the battlefield. And I liked that a major takeaway is the importance of accepting absolute responsibility for what you do. No one’s going to argue with these guys.

I found the book totally empowering. 

This book expanded my thinking and provided a fresh perspective, reminding me of why I became interested in this important topic years ago and continue to be fascinated by the complexity and nuances of cross-cultural communication.

Now, more than ever, we are all interconnected through advances in technology that bring us closer together. We are working increasingly with a global workforce that inherently comes with very different backgrounds, languages, histories, foods, music, religions, social norms, customs, traditions, and values.

We need to grow our understanding of people from cultures different from our own and Erin's book is a complimentary contribution to this body of knowledge; it is not duplicative but singularly unique and a refreshing read.

I love this book because it challenges us to think about what motivates people and how we can get the best out of ourselves and those around us.

Pink suggests, based on a lot of research, that having a clear purpose, learning new things that matter to us, and having autonomy to take initiative are the three most important things that “drive” us, and while there might be more to the equation, this is a great place to start in unlocking our potential.

I don’t know a single great leader who hasn’t read this book. Andy Grove made me rethink what it means to be an effective manager. Before reading it, I thought leadership was about vision and execution—but this book drilled home that structure, process, and discipline are just as critical. His take on 1:1 meetings as a tool for coaching, not just updates, changed how I mentor.

This book is pure gold for scaling yourself as a leader. If you’re managing people and want to be more effective, this is one of the best books you’ll ever read.

Written in short pithy chapters, you can dip in and out of it whenever you need a boost.

I have personally seen the benefits of creative confidence in my work and the work of others around me.

Beverly Kaye is a training and development icon who received the "Distinguished Contribution" award from the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) for her impact on workplace learning over the past three decades.

I think of Dorie Clark’s book as a companion book to mine. If you like my book, it’s likely that you’ll also get a lot of value out of reading hers. In this book, Clark focuses on helping people discover their breakthrough idea, a step that I think of as a prequel to the steps I outline for becoming a thought leader. She goes deep on the concept of the “Big Idea,” sharing some of the pathways that others have taken to distill a unique perspective or innovative differentiator that allows them to stand out. 

As I do in my book, Clark then shares her perspective on building an audience for your ideas, effectively communicating your message, and inspiring others to embrace your vision. This book is much more hands-on and, when completed by the user, but the format and exercises may not appeal to every job applicant.
