I read this in one sitting and had such a happy feeling. As usual, it's laugh-out-loud funny, but underneath is quite serious commentary on modern society and feeling overwhelmed. Sophie Kinsella is my favorite author and I can't recommend her books enough.

Sparks fly in this delightful novel about two burned out professionals who meet at a ramshackle resort on the British seaside—from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Party Crasher.

A shy bookworm enlists her charming neighbor to help her score a date, not knowing he’s the obscure author she’s been corresponding with, in this sparkling and heart-fluttering romance by Kristina Forest.

Shy, bookish, and admittedly awkward, Lily Greene has always felt inadequate compared to the rest of her accomplished family, who strive for Black excellence. She dreams of becoming a children’s books editor, but she’s been frustratingly stuck in the nonfiction division for years without a promotion in sight. Book cover of The Undomestic Goddess

Kathy Strobos Author Of Love Is an Art

From my list on romantic comedy to encourage you to pursue your dreams.

Why am I passionate about this?

I like to read about people pursuing their dream because that’s not an easy thing to do. When I was working as a lawyer at a corporate law firm, I was sure I wanted to become a partner. But eventually I realized that being in-house counsel at a company was a much better fit for me so I changed jobs. And similarly, I’d always wanted to write a romantic comedy and so, after many years as a lawyer, I started taking courses at night, and eventually I found the courage to quit my legal job and pursue this passion. The underlying theme of all of my books is to encourage readers to pursue their dreams.

Kathy's book list on romantic comedy to encourage you to pursue your dreams

Kathy Strobos Why Kathy loves this book

This is one of my favorite books—probably because I was a stressed-out corporate lawyer who definitely can’t iron.

The Undomestic Goddess is the story of a workaholic lawyer who is trying to become a partner at her law firm—only to get fired for an egregious mistake that she can’t believe she made. In her shock, she agrees to become a housekeeper. The only problem is she has no idea how to do any housework, which leads to some hilarious scenes.

I also loved how she figured out the mystery leading to her dismissal. This book made me feel less alone as a stressed-out workaholic lawyer and also made me consider that maybe being a partner at a law firm was not what I really wanted in life.

Book cover of The Idea of You

Claire Handscombe Author Of Unscripted

From my list on celebrity crushes.

Why am I passionate about this?

There’s something deeply alluring about the glamour of fame, even if it’s not all as shiny when you look closer. My first celebrity crush was on Jason Donovan—I’m guessing that some of my fellow British Gen Xers might relate! In my arguably more mature 30s, I developed an interest in a show slightly more critically acclaimed than the Australian soap Jason had come to prominence in, and it ended up changing my life in ways I could never have predicted. I’m a passionate person, and those passions have shaped me, which I think is why I love tales of celebrity crushes.

Claire Handscombe Why Claire loves this book

This novel utterly gripped me, and when I finished it, I wrote an eight-word review: “I think this book might actually be perfect.” It’s got everything I could ever want in a story: beautiful writing, sizzling scenes, glamorous locations, and an emotionally resonant exploration of themes like age, fame, and motherhood, as well as, of course, love.

I’ve long since lost count of the number of times I’ve recommended it to people who are looking for a book they won’t be able to put down.

The protagonist, Ariadne, is also a stressed-out lawyer—are you sensing a theme?

In this case, her becoming a law firm partner is not only her aspiration, but the dream of her dad—and she doesn’t want to disappoint him. But Ariadne begins to question this goal upon meeting Jihoon. He’s her roommate’s cousin come to recover from a breakup. Ariadne creates a walking map for him, with all her favorite places in her Toronto neighborhood, sharing her delight in creating travel itineraries.

I loved the swooniness of the romance (I’m addicted to Korean romance dramas so this novel hits those heartwarming moments) and Ariadne’s journey figuring out her future. This book’s message—that in the end, you have to live your life for yourself—definitely resonated with me.

Luckily, she has her family and the aunties on her side.  I love an opposites-attract romance, and Zara and Jay were absolutely lovely together. The Summer of Sebastian features computer programmer Helen Hobbs and Olympic athlete Sebastian Clarke, so there are no lawyers here, although Sebastian with his fake dating contract and his citing the various clauses makes a good lawyer stand-in.

Helen wants to save the only home she’s ever known—an idyllic cottage set in the middle of Mendip Hills, near Bristol in the UK. She’s willing to do anything for her dream—and that includes fake dating Sebastian for money.

I adore fake dating romances and this one gets it right—especially with the brilliant banter between Helen and Sebastian. And I love how Helen and Sebastian figure out how to make their dreams a reality.
