71 Books Like The Kindness Quilt

Like many children, Chloe, the main character in this story, keeps to her small posse of friends; but she is also something of a snob. When a new girl, Maya, joins her class and tries to befriend her, Chloe takes one look at Maya’s ragged clothes and turns away. A classroom lesson about kindness causes Chloe to reevaluate her behavior. By this time, however, Maya’s family has moved away, and Chloe is left only with her regret.

It’s not a happy ending, but it’s one that I find much more meaningful than the usual trite scenes of apology and forgiveness. It’s important, I believe, for children to realize that some wrongs can’t be undone but can serve as lessons for the future.

Brian feels invisible because he’s never picked by his classmates for teams, is ignored at lunchtime, and isn’t invited to a classmate’s birthday party. I liked the way the illustrator drew Brian in shades of gray rather than full color, like the other characters. When a new child joins the class, Brian shows kindness when other classmates make fun of him.

I liked how the new boy wants to include Brian, and that bit of kindness makes all the difference–turning the illustrations from gray to full color.  

The classic story of an elephant who discovers a tiny creature and deposits it on a clover where an entire town of creatures live. Despite ridicule, Horton defends his new friends.

I think this is an important topic of discussion with kids–how to continue being kind to some while others are ridiculing you for it. I love the imaginative drawings and the heartfelt message of this book. 

This story brought me to tears because it shows the beauty of empathy and the joy of helping others. The main character’s journey from wanting something for himself to generously helping a friend is so moving.

It’s a gentle yet impactful way to teach kids the value of kindness.

This book will console children and give them the hope and confidence to move forward in life, despite the pitfalls and challenges they face. Read it to any child facing problems to help them solve them. At the end, the author lists recommended books and websites on the same topics. A reference book on empathy.

Kindness multiplies. These words (from the endnotes) come to life in the stirring story portrayed in I Walk With Vanessa: A Story About a Simple Act of Kindness. The new girl in school is bullied, but another girl’s decision to walk her to school creates a community outpouring of empathy—and joy. The story itself has no words, but the illustrations offer many opportunities for discovery and discussion. One of my all-time favorites!

I like that this book showcases what not to do when you encounter someone struggling with anxiety—as the book’s overzealous protagonist (prone to messes of all sorts!) discovers when she wants to help a classmate who’s so afraid of bugs that she won’t even play at recess.

When Veronica’s first instincts don’t work (humor, distraction, etc.), I loved that the book spotlighted a different mental-health tactic: exposure therapy or systemic desensitization, a technique that I haven’t seen other books introduce to children.

I also loved that the book specified that you can’t force someone to get over their fears; it has to be something they want for themselves. Instead, Veronica acts as an invaluable (and endearing!) support network for her friend when she decides to face her fears for herself.

Judy Blume books are classics! One of the aspects I love most about this one is that the main character is neither the victim nor the bully. She’s a classmate stuck in the middle. Jill is, depending on the chapter, either a bully or a victim—but her role is to witness the bullying events in her class and report them back to the reader.

The reader judges for himself how Jilly fits into the bigger picture of bullying. It’s very easy for younger readers to relate to Jill because chances are they have been in both roles at different times. Jill learns the hard way throughout the story that it isn’t fun to be the bully because sooner or later, even bullies end up being bullied. 

It’s a young adult novel series that has a lasting appeal because these are privileged characters dealing with grief while also desperate to keep their secrets under wraps. The series still maintains an active Reddit forum for fans recently discovering the books and the television series as well as those deep in their rereads and rewatches.

The forum encouraged me to also read the books. I literally kept this TV series on in the background when I would type scenes or plot out ideas, and then found the book series at my local used book shop and read through the first one quickly. 

This graphic novel literally illustrates many ways in which the average school day is challenging to introverts, from the bus, to school hallways, to the cafeteria, to navigating pre-class chatter. Emmie is very in tune with her feelings and able to focus on drawing no matter the noise all around, but still questions her own value: “Does anyone ever see me? Do I want them to?” When the author drew Emmie with a disappearing mouth to show how others view her as mute—ooh, I got goosebumps. I adore a book that makes me go back and read it again the moment I finish it.
