I've been the resident playwright at First Stage Children’s Theater in Milwaukee for over twenty years. I began my career by adapting classic titles for the stage: Little House Christmas, Treasure Island, Huck Finn, Through the Looking Glass, Tom Sawyer. As I researched previous adaptions of these novels, I discovered how so many of them were quite different from the author’s original intentions. I don’t feel these adaptations are 'bad,' by any means—in fact, I believe you have to break free of a novel to truly adapt it for a different medium—but often the 'adaptation' is the only part of the story that gets passed down to us.

After reading The Princess Bride, I fell in love with William Goldman’s style of narration, with his frequent interjections, clarifications, and asides. The feel I got from the author speaking directly to me transformed simple third-person narration into engaging storytelling. From then on, I sought out books using this style and have built a small library in all genres deploying this unique voice. I’ve found it most common (and most effectively deployed) in fantasy, but there are also numerous examples elsewhere in the literary world.

I’ve loved fantasy and science fiction all my life. At its best, it has a numinous quality rarely seen in other books. I’ve read many of the classic fantasy novels written before fantasy was a genre. The beauty of those old books is that the writers received their inspiration from stories not influenced by The Lord of the Rings, so there’s a refreshing originality to their work. I love modern fantasy as well, especially those demonstrating new, inventive ideas.

Ostensibly written for children, it’s more fun for adults. A story of two wizards, Prospero and Roger Bacon (and not the ones you’re thinking of), and their quest to find the evil destroying the world.
It’s scary and funny, and I only wish Bellairs had written a couple more such books. The rest of his work, while well-done, can’t compare to this one.
