Why read it?

2 authors picked Jack of Shadows as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

The Earth has stopped spinning; magic rules on the night side, science on the light.

Not all of Zelany’s work holds up, but this one, a tale of Jack, a denizen of the dark side, is perhaps his best novel. I love the world Zelazny creates here.

It’s a slender book that drew me through from beginning to end.

Some of Zelazny’s work doesn’t hold up well today. Jack of Shadows is the exception.

The world does not revolve—magic works on the night side, science on the day side. Shadowjack is an immortal thief, always resurrected after his death, seeking revenge on those who once slew him. Great world-building, great characterization and lean but lovely prose. The book instills a real Sense of Wonder.
