When I was about 8 years old, I read a book called Tom and the Two Handles by Russell Hoban. Itās a childrenās book designed to teach that every story has two sides. This book stuck with me for some reason. So, when I started writing novels, I always made sure my villains had pure motives. Remember, no well-written bad guy THINKS heās a bad guy. He thinks heās doing the right thing. This is true of all the classic Bond villains right up to Thanos in the MCU. Plus, and Iām sure most writers would agree, the bad guys are always more fun to write.
This is another book that I discovered after seeing the TV show. The Netflix adaptation is fairly faithful to the text, but I still really enjoyed the novel because the writing is witty, clever, and beautifully paced in a way that makes you want to keep reading when you know you should turn out the light and go to sleep.
The little character quirks add realism and some much-needed light relief to a pretty dark story. For me, the scariest thing about this book is, even though our lead character goes to extreme lengths most of us would never even consider, the roots of his actions come from thoughts weāve probably all had.

I have been writing for years and reading forever. Fantasy books have always been my number one go-to as far as genres. I loved how they would teleport me to a new world, allowing me to leave behind reality. The characters became my friends. The worlds became my home. I couldnāt get enough and still canāt. As I got older, my imagination never stopped. I was constantly creating dreamworld and character plots in my head. Eventually, I started writing, needing the characters to stop talking. The only way to do that was to get them on paper. Since then, I havenāt been able to stop.
Can we say HOT! This entire series was spicy and full of smut. I love the romance in this book. The building of the backstories of the characters that left you wondering what would happen next and how where they going to end up together in the end.
The incorporation of folklore and tales from history hooked me right away. Each character had a different struggle that you could relate to or empathize with. Even though they were morally gray, you ended up routing for each of them in the end.
It's a super fun series and an easy read that will definitely keep you up at night.Ā

Aiden and Vanessaās story is another slow burn, but it does not feel slow at all. Zapata has a way of building a sensual story that makes you want more without feeling as if you are missing something. I did not think I would like slow-burn romances until I came across Zapata. I fell in love with these characters as they were becoming friends and ultimately as they fell in love with one another. I found myself smiling a lot watching the interactions between these two. Itās magic. I still think of Aiden often and wish he were my boyfriend! (That is how much I liked him).

I wanted one more gothic novel, with all the mystery of Edmond DantĆØs and with all the philosophical complexity of Jean-Valjeanābut with a strong female protagonist and a lush Americana setting. So I wrote it myself.
Nothing scary happens exactly, but that doesnāt stop this novel from holding a strange and creepy tension throughout the whole of it. With a heavy surrealist bent, the book centers on a girl and her father who were born from the ground, and so have the powers to heal people by moving around the things that are inside them. Itās exactly as haunting as it sounds.
