I have been fascinated with peopleās minds since probably my second psychology class in college. It was when I heard a professor say that all creatives were crazy. I argued that one with her. You donāt have to be creative to be crazy; trust me on this, I was right. Yes, many gifted people are borderline, and there really are savants in this world, but I truly believe they are rare. So, I have studied and been up close and personal with people who have psychological issues. Iāve also met some fascinating people who have managed to become successful. Others, not so much.
This book didnāt start out in the usual way. That in itself grabbed my attention. Itās a thriller, so I expect the first paragraph at least to pull me in. It didnāt grab me the way most do; it slowly sucked me in until I found myself not wanting to put it down.
The two main characters seemed to be at odds. One wanting to help and one refusing to speak. I donāt understand not trying to find answers that keep me silent. It must be the curiosity that kept me reading. Because the woman could speak. At least she could at one time. Either it was something traumatic, or it was just plain stubbornness. Or was I missing the entire point? Always an option.Ā

As a published author, Debraās passion for fast-paced, unputdownable novels is unquenchable. She can be ruthless in her criticism, applying the rule, āthree strikes and youāre out!ā A firm believer that life is too short to read mediocre books, if she isnāt grabbed by chapter 3, she puts the book down and moves on. She wants a book to make her life better, she wants to feel excitement at picking it back up again, and burying herself in the characters and moods, twists and turns, of a great story. Her writing reflects this same trait, if her words wonāt keep the reader totally engrossed, then she wonāt write them.

One of my all-time favourites Iāve read this book 3 times now and, after this review, Iām sure Iāll be tempted to indulge myself for a fourth time. Follett is the master of knife-edge thrillers, if youāve never read him, start now.Ā Full of treachery and violence, twists and revelations.Ā Itās a scary, but utterly brilliant read.

So, for my list, I wanted to pick my top five reads that your dad absolutely wonāt be able to put down if you were to gift him one of these for Fatherās Day! There are all kinds of reading dads out there, from History Dads to Thriller Dads to Fantasy Dads. Don Winslow is an acknowledged master of crime fiction, one of the greatest of all time. But this book flies under the radar because itās not a standalone novel or a chapter in one of his longer crime saga series. Rather, itās a collection of six knock-down, drag-out crime novellas. Some of the stories follow familiar Winslow characters or take place in settings heās already explored, butĀ through a new lens. Every story is different, with characters and settings I loved, all imbued with Winslowās gift for verisimilitude and wry turns of phrase.Ā
'You can't ask for more emotionally moving entertainment' Stephen King
A riveting collection of original fiction from the revered #1 international bestselling author of The Cartel trilogy and The Force
No matter how you come into this world, you come out broken...
In six intense, haunting short novels, Don Winslow returns to the themes that are the hallmarks of his acclaimed body of work - crime, corruption, vengeance, justice, loss, betrayal, guilt, and redemption - to explore the savagery and nobility that drive and define the human condition.
In Broken, Winslow creates a world of high-level thieves and low-life crooks,ā¦
I am Casey Kelleher, a crime writer and author of 17 novels. I have always been a complete and utter bookworm, but my true passion is crime and psych thrillers. Most of my stories concentrate on the victimāor, as I prefer to call them, the survivor. Thatās who I champion in my stories, highlighting the strength of that person who has overcome whatever harsh reality thatās been forced upon them. But I also like to get inside the perpetratorās head. I want to know the āwhysā of what they do. Psychology is very complex, but I do believe that there can be good and bad/darkness and light in all of us.
This was the first Martina Cole novel I read, and it literally changed my life. Not only does it allow you to get inside the sick and twisted head of a serial killer, but you also get a real insight into the dark and murky criminal underworld. Itās a brutal, violent story, but it really reflects that world.Ā
The fact that a woman wrote it really did profoundly change something in (young, naive, 15-year-old) me. It opened my eyes to a completely new spin on the crime thriller genre for me, not only for reading but also for when I first began my career as an author.Ā
The 25th anniversary special edition of the iconic thriller, The Ladykiller, from No. 1 bestselling author and 'undisputed Queen of crime writing' (Erwin James) Martina Cole. I am an author and a reader, and there is little I love more than falling deep into an atmospheric mystery. One that has the texture of dark velvetāsomething so rich, vivid, and experiential I can almost wrap it around meāand has just the right amount of suspense to keep me turning pages. As an author of historical fiction and mysteries, capturing that immersive, atmospheric sense of place is so important to me. When I see this done well, I want to savor it, study itāand try to get you to read it, too.
No one does dialogue and atmospheric tension like Tana French. Faithful Place is my favorite of hers.
I felt like the characters were so alive that I could hear their voices in my head long after I had closed the book. This story is rife with a gritty, urban Irish atmosphere and thick with familial tension. French does a cross between literary fiction and procedural that is devastating, at times quite dark, and yet ringing with hopeāone of my favorite qualities in a mystery.
Best read on a dark, rainy afternoon with a mug of rich coffeeāor a Guinness.Ā
From Tana French, author of the forthcoming novelĀ The Searcher, āthe most important crime novelist to emerge in the past 10 yearsā (The Washington Post), the bestseller called āthe most stunning of her booksā (The New York Times) and a finalist for the Edgar Award.Ā
Back in 1985, Frank Mackey was a nineteen-year-old kid with a dream of escaping hisi family's cramped flat on Faithful Place and running away to London with his girl, Rosie Daly. But on the night they were supposed to leave, Rosie didn't show. Frank took it for grantedĀ that she'd dumped him-probably because of hisā¦
I am an avid fantasy reader and writer. I have been writing for many years and love to craft detailed worlds and complex characters that surprise and delight readers. Stories are about challenges, overcoming the barriers that are put in front of us, and growing in the process. Characters do not have to be good or bad; they can be both, a mixture, just like real people. I strive to create characters that make people stop and think, make them question their assumptions, or relate to them in ways that they had not expected. Fantasy is about bringing real emotions to readers through an imaginary setting, and I love it.
I loved the Nevernight books because the main character is not necessarily always a hero. Mia is an assassin and cares only about killing. This means it can be uncomfortable to support her decisions and actions when they involve so much death and bloodshed.
She kills for reasons that she thinks are justified, but that isnāt always right, and it is great to see her grow and become something more than just a killing machine. She has a great personality and endures many hardships through the series but I loved reading along and seeing how she overcame everything she faced.
In a world where the suns almost never set, a woman gains entry to a school of infamous assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers that destroyed her family. Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father's failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she wanders a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and its thugs. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the hearth of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined. Now, Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flockā¦
Like many people, The Lord of the Ringscaptivated me as a child. I read those books as well as The Hobbit half a dozen times before I was twelve, and a couple of times more since. Whatās more, I was lucky enough to be nine when the first movie came out, which only furthered my childhood obsession. Though Iām less enthralled by the series now, the classic quest it represents still has a place in my heart. Iāve tried to reproduce the grandeur and adventure of that story in my writing, and Iāve found a good portion of it in the books I recommend below. May they take you on captivating new journeys!
Quest is in the name, and does it ever live up to it! As the culmination of The Farseer Trilogy, it does the previous books justice. The journey is arduous, full of twists and turns, and the reader feels every wound Fitz suffers. Yet as in every good quest, in the end, he achieves what he aims to do ā though not in the way he expects, and at an unimaginable cost. This is Hobb at her finest, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
'Fantasy as it ought to be written' George R.R. Martin
The gripping finale to Robin Hobb's classic Farseer Trilogy.
With the king no longer living and the heir, Verity, missing and declared dead, Prince Regal has treacherously seized the throne.
Regal's torture has left Fitz more dead than alive, and more closely than ever bonded with his wolf. All who once loved him believe him dead: even Molly, now pregnant with his child. But he cannot go to her without placing her in terrible danger.
With nothing to lose, Fitz sets out for Tradeford, where Regal has withdrawn, having heartlesslyā¦
I have read adventure, crime, and thriller books all my life. Reading is a huge relaxation for me and a good novel will transport me from the stresses and strains of daily life into another place in my head. A place where I feel involved with the characters and the environment, a place where I can imagine I could be. A good storyteller is different from a crime writer. They take the reader on a journey that might be through history or different continents. A journey that the reader wants to travel as well. I try to emulate this in my writing.
The story of the young orphan Pip, the escaped convict Magwitch, the recluse Miss Haversham, and her adopted daughter Estella. Dickens weaves the story back and forth between the characters.
You could pick many of Dickensā books, but I think this story has everything: murder, love, intrigue, and tragedy. A storyteller extraordinaire. Iād go as far as to say that he is Britainās greatest storyteller.
'His novels will endure as long as the language itself' Peter Ackroyd
Dickens's haunting late novel depicts the education and development of a young man, Pip, as his life is changed by a series of events - a terrifying encounter with an escaped convict in a graveyard on the wild Kent marshes; a summons to meet the bitter, decaying Miss Havisham and her beautiful, cold-hearted ward Estella; the sudden generosity of a mysterious benefactor - and he discovers the true nature of his 'great expectations'. This definitive edition includes appendices on Dickens's original ending, giving an illuminating glimpse into aā¦
