I have enjoyed personal experiences that are probably unlike those of most women my age and background. I thought it would be a unique example to write about myself, growing up as a local child in British Colonial Singapore, at a time when most other local children who grew up in Singapore during the early 50s and 60s had lives fraught with hardships, poverty, and distress. The common theme is extensive in all the book references I have made, as every story is about someone’s growing-up years in an Oriental or Eastern environment, and their relationships or lack thereof, with their respective parent(s).
I found the book reminded me so much of my own ‘tiger mother’ during my childhood and growing up years, where ‘good’ was never enough. It had to be ’best’. Her writing was plain and uncomplicated, whilst the relationships she had with her musician daughters were quite the contrary, and I found this juxtaposition rather extraordinary.
I found the book satisfying to read, and the incidents in it were uncannily similar to my own experiences with my mother.

I first became interested in the subject of my novel after reading about the prosecution and sentencing of Andrea Yates, the mother who drowned her five children in a bathtub. My curiosity led me to Dr. Spinelli’s book, and the studies and scientific information told me there was a book there. Having lived on the St. Clair River, I knew it had to be part of the story. As a retired lawyer, I had plenty of knowledge of the court system, so I decided to write the novel from the lawyer’s point of view and include her personal growth as she connects to her client in unorthodox ways.
Although considered a classic, I only read this book while working on my novel, and it has haunted me ever since. The injustice of the girl’s treatment versus that of the father (who is never publicly identified in the story) left a serious impression and kept me at my writing desk.

Although I’m not convinced Old Order Amish women actually would venture out this way, I liked that the female characters made the tough decision to leave their community because of abuse and violence to start the new community of Promise Lodge.
The story delves into some of the hidden problems some Amish women have to deal with and exposes the dark secrets characters are hiding. Second chances, forgiveness, and fresh starts are all themes close to my heart, and I found the interesting, strong characters combined with their trust, faith, and community relationships made for a compelling story.

This is one of my favorite middle-grade books for a few reasons.
First, it is a time travel story that doesn’t feel like time travel; the supernatural element is so masterfully woven into the tale that it just makes sense. Slipping between two time periods and seeing all the pieces fit together is so satisfying! But for me, the best part of the book is the way in which traveling back in time allows Patricia to learn to love and understand her mother.

This is a beautifully tragic coming-of-age novel. The daughter of the midwife was a fascinating character who had to make a tough ethical decision. This book blew me away, for the power of the story, the prose, the plot, and the surprise twist in the tale.
I think there’s a place in our culture for home births, and midwives are trained to assist with this. My granddaughter is a Birth Doula who is trained to have the hospital intervene should complications arise. This book opened my eyes to the prejudice against home births and the people who choose to have them.
