I love books that reimagine a story that is well known, challenging reader's assumptions about the characters or the circumstances they find themselves in, while also standing on its own for readers that haven't read the inspiration. JAMES brings Huck Finn's companion to life, giving him wit, intelligence, and agency. I read it twice, back-to-back. Easily my favorite read of 2025!
'Truly extraordinary books are rare, and this is one of them' - Roddy Doyle, Booker Prize-winning author of Paddy Clarke, Ha Ha Ha
James by Percival Everett is a profound and ferociously funny meditation on identity, belonging and the sacrifices we make to protect the ones we love, which reimagines The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. From the author of The Trees, shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and Erasure, adapted into the Oscar-winning film American Fiction.

I've been delving further into psychological horror lately, as that's also what I like to write. Ramsey Cambell has been one of my favorite writers for many decades, and this book is a special treat. Not your typical haunted house story, though...it's much more subtle than that. Campbell weaves in great family dynamics, a subtle humor, and the sharpest eye for detail. Superbly written!
I am Casey Kelleher, a crime writer and author of 17 novels. I have always been a complete and utter bookworm, but my true passion is crime and psych thrillers. Most of my stories concentrate on the victimâor, as I prefer to call them, the survivor. Thatâs who I champion in my stories, highlighting the strength of that person who has overcome whatever harsh reality thatâs been forced upon them. But I also like to get inside the perpetratorâs head. I want to know the âwhysâ of what they do. Psychology is very complex, but I do believe that there can be good and bad/darkness and light in all of us.
This book was just something else completely for me. I went in blind, knowing nothing about the story or subject matterâwhich is dark and complex. The writing style is just perfection, and I can honestly say Iâve never been so obsessed with a book in my entire life. I donât read books for a second time (because, let's face it, who has time for that when our reading lists are already never-ending), But I would happily devour this one all over again. In fact, I get jealous when I hear people start it for the very first time.Â
It's dark and complex, and it will split the audience in two, with no room for an in-between. You will either ADORE this book or LOATHE it. For me, it was perfection.Â
A beautiful and provocative love story between two unlikely people and the hard-won relationship that elevates them above the Midwestern meth lab backdrop of their lives.

Delia Owensâs Crawdads was a smashing success as both a novel (her first) and a motion picture. âBuked, beaten, and scorned by her feckless father, abandoned by her mother and older siblings, an illiterate girl of ten lives alone on the marshy coast of North Carolina. Befriended by a boy who teaches her to read with the compelling prose of A Sand County Almanac, Kya comes to see her world through the eyes of its author, Aldo Leopold. Kya and Tate grow up and fall in love, but he goes off to collegeâand she is again abandoned. She becomes a renowned naturalist, artist, and author, but falls sexual prey to a scoundrel, who winds up dead. Itâs a murder mystery, but also a story of triumph and a beautiful portrayal of an environment often as reviled by polite society as its once feral celebrant.

For years, rumours of the 'Marsh Girl' have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to beâŚ
Growing up in theatre, I was completely immersed in plays, which tend to be deep dives of the human psyche, and I latched on to those examinations like a dog with a bone. Iâve always loved the complexities of the human mind, specifically how we so desperately want to believe that anything beautiful, expensive, or exclusive must mean that the person, place, or thing is of more value. But if we pull back the curtain, and really take a raw look, we see that nothing is exempt from smudges of ugliness. Itâs the ugliness, especially in regard to human character, that I find most fascinating.Â
I love love love an unreliable narrator! Especially when that narrator is a beautiful, elegant woman who turns out to have the ugliest soul imaginable. I think as a whole, our society tends to be extra afraid when they see conniving evil existing in a femaleâs mind, especially when sheâs physically beautiful and well spoken.
At certain points in this book, I found myself weirdly rooting for Amy and chomping at the bit to see how far her âcrazyâ would take her. The twists and turns kept me racing through this book and left me wondering at the end, âWhat happens to them now?!â

It was following characters on a reality TV show and I am a sucker for some good reality TV. It gave a view into the behind the scenes of the filming process and showed that love blossoms in so many different ways. It can be complicated and messy but also beautiful and fulfilling.
I was so invested in these characters and could not put the book down. It was so cute!

I am a long-time ER nurse, aid worker, and writer, and I have long been fascinated by true crime/mysteries; much of that interest honed in the ER, where I was often stumped when patient injuries or recollections of witnesses didnât quite add up. As amateur detectives, we ER nurses often hounded detectives with our own theories, and in one especially big murder case, we had figured out exactly what had happened and who the real killer was before the detectives did. I am also a voracious reader and love a good mystery/thriller to take me away from real life, except when I am solving real life crimes on Dateline.
I love anything that Lisa Jewell writes, and this is the perfect mystery, albeit a little predictable.
A 15-year-old girl has gone missing and her family is frantic. The characters were so well drawn, I felt as though I knew them. And for me, that is often what keeps me reading. Â
From the New York Times bestselling author of Invisible Girl and The Truth About Melody Browne comes a ârivetingâ (PopSugar) and âacutely observed family dramaâ (People) that delves into the lingering aftermath of a young girlâs disappearance.
Ellie Mack was the perfect daughter. She was fifteen, the youngest of three. Beloved by her parents, friends, and teachers, and half of a teenaged golden couple. Ellie was days away from an idyllic post-exams summer vacation, with her whole life ahead of her.
The two people I love most, my husband and my son, manage obsessive-compulsive disorder. Their struggles constantly inspire me and illustrate the courage it takes to navigate everyday life with an invisible disability. We donât talk enough about that courage. Instead, society passes judgment and shares OCD jokes. Thereâs nothing funny about a chronic, potentially fatal illness that demands lifelong management. After all, we donât laugh at diabetics, and people arenât defined by their disabilities. (Think of Helen Kellerâs achievements!) My passion is to create characters who chip away at the stigma, shame, and stereotypes of mental illness. They also prove the mantra, âYou are not your disorder.â Amen.
This historical romance features an ambitious heroine, who doesnât allow undiagnosed OCD to define her life, and a displaced immigrant determined to reclaim his birthright, despite a physical disability. The parallel between their struggles illustrates how physical and mental illnesses share similar challenges. Why canât we treat them equally?
Libby Shaw refuses to accept society's dictates. She's determined to become a member of Edinburgh's all-male Royal College of Surgeons. This love story is unique. Zee is a hot-tempered drug dealer with a damaged leg. Sir Gentry is a sweet guy on the autism spectrum who hears voices, thinks heâs her Medieval champion, and talks only in Middle English. But lack of judgment, understanding, and compassion make them equals in love.
A new provocative love story from the New York Times bestselling author of All the Ugly and Wonderful Things.  âThe story of Zee and Gentry is the reason we read.â âBrunonia Barry  Their journey will break themâor save them.  A moving and complicated love story for our time, The Reckless Oath We Made redefines what it means to be heroic. In this romance, the author doesnât gloss over the raw, ugly lies of the heroineâs depression. She also touches on an issue we don't often see in fictionâbody dysmorphia in men. Ultimately, two broken souls step outside their comfort zones to be together. Thatâs where the good stuff happensâŚ
