Book description

Why read it?

4 authors picked All the Ugly and Wonderful Things as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

This book was just something else completely for me. I went in blind, knowing nothing about the story or subject matter–which is dark and complex. The writing style is just perfection, and I can honestly say I’ve never been so obsessed with a book in my entire life. I don’t read books for a second time (because, let's face it, who has time for that when our reading lists are already never-ending), But I would happily devour this one all over again. In fact, I get jealous when I hear people start it for the very first time.

It's dark…

I loved this book because it took me to places I found uncomfortable in a way I could manage.

I found the relationships challenging to accept but totally understandable, given the circumstances. The voices were clear and distinct. The way the story progressed allowed me to stay with and feel compassion for lives I would have otherwise judged.

It was a stunningly brave book.

This is one of the most beautifully written stories I've read in a long time. It is quite dark, but the author uses hope as a foil to the dark quality of the story.

It isn't always a perfect balance, but then, neither is real life. It's an odd story, a clever story, and a coming-of-age like none I've read before, with a female child protagonist who is both taken advantage of and idolized at the same time.

Some readers might wince at the liberties the author takes, but I applaud writers who have no fear and show a sense…

Bryn has given us a beautiful story hidden behind a dark cloud. The contents of this book may be hard to swallow for some, but for others the outcome is worth the ride. A path full of harmful neglect and misguided trust will open your eyes to visions never before seen.

I read this book years ago, and the story still sticks with me. I love a book that can bring out multiple emotions within me, and All The Ugly And Wonderful Things did just that.
