Why read it?

4 authors picked Then She Was Gone as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

I love anything that Lisa Jewell writes, and this is the perfect mystery, albeit a little predictable.

A 15-year-old girl has gone missing and her family is frantic. The characters were so well drawn, I felt as though I knew them. And for me, that is often what keeps me reading.

This was a great psychological thriller. What really caught me off guard was how desolate and dire the entire truth of the story turned out to be for everyone involved.

I liked the darkness of the story, and I love Lisa’s writing style. Her stories always pull me in right from the very start. She is a firm favorite of mine.

Fantastically plotted, clever, and gripping, Then She Was Gone pulled me in immediately.

The best part of this novel is the raw, realistic characters with emotional depth. Yes, it’s twisty. But it’s also compellingly well-written in that it draws you into the characters’ heartache and helplessness like few thrillers do. This story is told in multiple points of view and alternates between “now” and “then,” a structure that works well.

From Kate's list on missing children.

I picked up Then She Was Gone at a thrift store, thinking it would be a quick, fun read while I was at the beach. Quick read, yes. Fun…? Not so much. Then She Was Gone had me flipping the pages faster than a snake can hiss. As the story unraveled, I found myself muttering “oh no, no…no way” more than once. The story was both heart-wrenching and disturbing, and it lingered with me long after I’d closed the book. It touches on love, marriage, motherhood, loss, grief, and shattered hopes. It’s not a feel-good book, but it’s…
