100 Books Like My Grandpa Is Great

This author’s writing style and her great sense of humour will definitely be a big hit with the kids and also with grandparents. I love the twist Ellis puts on her book. She accomplishes this by telling a story that does not in any way match the illustrations. The reader’s attention is captured immediately because he realizes that something is different about this book, something isn’t quite right. The drawings are funny, exaggerated, and colourful, all the ingredients that kids love to see in a book. I’m a grandparent and I laughed right along with my grandchildren as we read the story. The ending is priceless. On the last page, the illustrations finally match the words. What an entertaining book for both the young and the young at heart.  

Jean Regan has written a beautiful, funny, heartwarming story about the love and fun that is shared between the different generations, a grandmother and a granddaughter. I love the way she has reversed the roles of her main characters. This approach will appeal to little ones who will definitely want to babysit their grandma while still enjoying all the wonderful activities that a visit to Grandma’s house entails. The illustrations are cute, detailed, and add to the storyline. This is a great little book for parents to read to their children before they visit and a good source of activity ideas for grandmas to have for their little guests once they arrive.

Claire Freedom uses animal characters to tell this story about the wonderful, loving relationships that exist between grandparents and a grandchild. I love the fact that it is never quite made clear whether the grandchild is a boy or a girl and as a result, the story applies to both. Children will quickly see themselves as the little zebra having fun and being spoiled rotten by two loving grandparents. The rhyming adds to the flow of the book.

I love this crazy, silly book. The plot will captivate the children’s attention as there are so many twists and turns throughout the story. Are the grandmas really grandmas or are they aliens? How will they solve this mystery? The use of rhyme adds to the flow and humour of the tale. Illustrations are imaginative and off the wall funny. The ending is priceless. I think there definitely should be a sequel.

This is the best book I’ve ever read on forging, deepening, and maintaining exceptional relationships. The authors are the long-time instructors of the infamous Interpersonal Dynamics course (aka “Touchy-Feely”) at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. They’ve been teaching it for 50+ years combined, so they know what they’re talking about. I love that they define an “exceptional relationship” as one where “you feel seen, known, and appreciated for who you really are, not an edited version of yourself.” Who wouldn’t want more of those?

I particularly like the set of tools the authors offer for handling conflict, creating a safe space for vulnerability, and giving feedback. I appreciate their simple (and challenging) step-by-step plan towards attaining pure relationship gold that's both deeply insightful and transformative.

Fighting a war required a lot of money, and David Thomson explains how that money was found. His story is surprising. Previous American wars going back to the Revolution had been funded by great merchants and financiers, but fundraising in the Union drew on a new source, by an unexpected figure.

The notorious financier Jay Cooke would later describe his role in organizing huge sales of U.S. war bonds to the American public as his finest hour. Certainly, there were bonds sold in European markets, especially in Germany, but the bulk of the war finance was based on ordinary Americans buying bonds to support the cause for a little old-age security in years to come.

I really took a chance with this story, and I’m glad I did. I read the entire series and its spin-off in a matter of days. I wish there were more books like this series. 

What really caught my attention were the characters. I developed a strong bond with them as they struggled to survive in a world that no longer exists. I found this relatable to my own daily struggles. It’s heartbreaking but also, after each obstacle they overcame, each victory they had. I cheered them on, hoping against all odds that not only would they survive but that they would also thrive. 

The apocalypse genre is extremely fascinating to me as a fellow writer because it’s almost a blank slate for creativity and you also get some very interesting takes as to what caused the end of the world, just like in the book. 

I can’t list thrillers that shine the spotlight on female relationships without featuring siblings. In this book, four sisters go to spend the summer with their aunt and uncle who haven’t recovered from their daughter’s disappearance five years previously. The main driver of the story is to uncover what really happened to Audrey Wilde but I was drawn in by the special relationship between the four sisters. Perhaps it’s because I don’t have any siblings that the bond intrigues me.

When there are characters that are not wholly good or evil, this is definitely an eye-catcher for me. In this particular story, I found myself rooting for the ‘bad guys,’ the main characters. 

The female lead is someone who can really think on her feet and I really respect that in a character. This is not always done well. Often times, characters rely on their counterparts, but this wasn’t the case. When it came to the male character, he was the perfect level of nefarious. 

Throughout this story, I was enthralled by their contrasting natures and the environment they were forced to survive in.

I have to say, behind shark shifters, dragon shifters are my favorite kind of people. Generally speaking, if they’re the main characters in a book, it will definitely be on my radar. 

I was not disappointed. These characters were strong, fierce, and brutal, just exactly how a dragon should be. I also found it to be really refreshing to have human characters from the UK. This added a healthy amount of dry responses, especially in the main female lead, Amber. Despite everything Amber has gone through, she still holds onto the core of herself. 

I also loved the world the author created. I found myself getting lost in the intriguing plot and great action sequences.

Overall, I quite enjoyed the entire series, and I will definitely continue to read novels by the same author.
