Book cover of Passage

Megaera C. Lorenz Author Of The Shabti

From my list on fascination with ghosts, hauntings, and afterlife.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve always been nostalgic. I long for a connection with times and places I’ve never experienced, and I think my fascination with ghosts and the uncanny is connected to that. As a child, I fell in love with ancient Egypt, with its famously complex religious traditions concerning death and the afterlife. I earned a PhD in Egyptology and spent a lifetime crafting stories about the past, often with a speculative or supernatural twist. For me, ghosts and history are a natural combination.

Megaera's book list on fascination with ghosts, hauntings, and afterlife

Megaera C. Lorenz Why Megaera loves this book

I read this book not long after reading Spook, and it scratched many of the same philosophical itches for me. I love its dreamlike quality and haunting sense of nostalgia. As far as I know, it's also unlike any other work of fiction in its approach to the question of life after death.

It blends two seemingly unrelated topics—historical disasters (e.g., the Hartford circus fire, the sinking of the Titanic)—and the science of near-death experiences in a striking, unique way. Although it is, in many ways, a deeply sad story, it ultimately feels hopeful. This is one of those novels that left a lasting impact on my psyche.

One of those rare, unforgettable novels that are as chilling as they are insightful, as thought-provoking as they are terrifying, award-winning author Connie Willis's Passage is an astonishing blend of relentless suspense and cutting-edge science unlike anything you've ever read before.

It is the electrifying story of a psychologist who has devoted her life to tracking death. But when she volunteers for a research project that simulates the near-death experience, she will either solve life's greatest mystery -- or fall victim to its greatest terror.

Book cover of Dying to Be Me: My Journey from Cancer, to Near Death, to True Healing

Ingrid Ricks Author Of Focus

From my list on leveraging the now and the power of your mind.

Why am I passionate about this?

A shock diagnosis of a blinding eye disease at the age of 37, coupled with a trip to South Africa to write about the devastating toll of AIDS, drove home the importance of focusing on the Now. This newfound perspective led me to radically change my life and turn my author dream into reality. Eleven years later another shock diagnosis—this time with aggressive breast cancer—led me to the intersections between spirituality and science. That’s where I learned about the proven impact our thoughts and beliefs have on our health and overall life. I now use my transformative journey to empower audiences and help them pursue the lives they want—regardless of the challenges they face.

Ingrid's book list on leveraging the now and the power of your mind

Ingrid Ricks Why Ingrid loves this book

This book, which is part memoir, part healing, and transformation, is about a woman’s near-death experience after her body was ravaged by stage-four cancer and the miraculous spontaneous healing that followed. It’s an incredible story on its own. But what I found particularly fascinating were Moorjani’s conclusions regarding the thoughts, beliefs, and life experiences that led to her illness, as well as her overall take on how readers can promote healing in their own lives.

Upon regaining consciousness, Anita found that her condition had improved so rapidly that she was released from the hospital within weeks-without a trace of cancer in her body!

Within these pages, Anita recounts stories of her childhood in Hong Kong, her challenge to establish…

Book cover of On Life after Death

Kamla K. Kapur Author Of The Privilege of Aging

From my list on lighting up and rekindling the human spirit.

Why am I passionate about this?

I am excited by books that broaden my perspective on existence, dissolve mental barriers, broaden our visions, and offer powerful new ways to see the world; life-affirming books that help us to understand life, ourselves, become more conscious of existence, create our own realities and show us how to become masters of our lives instead of victims; books that blend science, spirituality, art, philosophy, life. The types of books I read and the types of books I write have plots that continuously span the terror of the human condition and transformation.

Kamla's book list on lighting up and rekindling the human spirit

Kamla K. Kapur Why Kamla loves this book

I devoured Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s book, which deeply shaped my understanding of mortality. Like Eben Alexander, it is her steady, compassionate voice that earns my trust. There’s something profoundly grounding about someone who has spent a lifetime walking beside the dying. Her use of metaphor speaks directly to the soul, especially mine. She writes, “The death of the human body is identical to what happens when the butterfly emerges from its cocoon... it is only a house to live in for a while.”

That image—death not as an end, but a transformation—resonates deeply. It speaks to humanity’s universal longing to understand what lies beyond. The symbol of metamorphosis becomes a vision of continuity and emergence.

Her book is rich with case histories of real people, near-death experiences that transcend explanation yet carry a current of truth. For those living with the shadow of mortality, these stories are reassuring. They offer the…

Book cover of In My Time of Dying: How I Came Face to Face with the Idea of an Afterlife

Sally Dukes Author Of Drummer Girl

From my list on pilgrimages of the soul.

Why am I passionate about this?

I love stories about “pilgrimage.” I have always been an admirer of those characters who search, whether in fiction or nonfiction. I respect their steadfast endurance to undertake a calling, meet unforeseen obstacles, and overcome insurmountable circumstances, while never allowing the burning flame that drives them to extinguish.

My own memoir, Drummer Girl, is the story of my pilgrimage. I have the distinct memory of traveling through a dark tunnel toward a clear light during surgery as a child. This experience of near death has since driven me to seek understanding, to look for words when there were none, and to find solace through life’s many turns.

Sally's book list on pilgrimages of the soul

Sally Dukes Why Sally loves this book

Always curious about those who experience near-death, I recently read In My Time of Dying.

Besides my self-interest in Junger’s actual experience, I found his curiosity and relentless determination to understand his experience, his idea of an afterlife, a pilgrimage into the metaphysical unknown. Mastering the medical knowledge of his vascular failure, Junger remains at a loss to intellectually grasp a cognitive understanding of his near-death experience.

At one point, an attending nurse said, “Instead of thinking of it as something scary, try thinking of it as something sacred.” It is Junger’s honest inquiry into the sacred and his weaving of questions with no clear answers that make this autobiography a humbling and insightful read.

A near-fatal health emergency leads to this powerful reflection on death—and what might follow—by the bestselling author of Tribe and The Perfect Storm.

For years as an award-winning war reporter, Sebastian Junger traveled to many front lines and frequently put his life at risk. And yet the closest he ever came to death was the summer of 2020 while spending a quiet afternoon at the New England home he shared with his wife and two young children. Crippled by abdominal pain, Junger was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. Once there, he began slipping away. As blackness encroached, he was…

Book cover of Saved by the Light: The True Story of a Man Who Died Twice and the Profound Revelations He Received

R. Chapman Wesley Author Of The Well

From my list on uspenseful spiritual transformation.

Why am I passionate about this?

I grew up in rural central Virginia the namesake of my African-American, family physician father, Dr. Robert C. Wesley and my educator mother, Anne Louise Reynolds. Becoming a physician seemed to be my destiny, which explains attending Yale Medical School. The Well was inspired by my lifelong concern over global health threats, originally regarding the threat of nuclear weapons, and propelled me toward pandemic inquiry. It was also a way to explore fundamental questions I struggled with: At the current state of mankind’s moral and ethical development, would a miraculous discovery controlled by very few lead to universal well-being or universal tyranny? I'm honored to submit my recommendations of books that combine suspense and spirituality.

R.'s book list on uspenseful spiritual transformation

R. Chapman Wesley Why R. loves this book

This book tells the autobiographical journey of Dannion Brinkley through the trauma and revelations experienced through two near-death experiences (NDEs), having been struck by lightning twice.

The suspense in the story lies not only in the shock of spiritual visions upon entering the nether world but the transformation of character and choices made upon return to the living.

Full disclosure. I have personally witnessed the ongoing spiritual transformation of the author after the publication of his seminal work and his first two NDEs. Dannion has been a dear friend of mine for over 25 years. I first met him when we were interviewed on a radio show in 1998 on the topic of integrative and complementary medicine.

Since the book’s publication, Dannion has experienced two additional NDEs. One occurred following aortic valve replacement surgery for a bicuspid aortic valve, originally traumatized by lightning shocks. The second occurred following redo aortic…

Book cover of Consciousness Beyond Life: The Science of the Near-Death Experience

Alan Pearce Author Of Coma and Near-Death Experience: The Beautiful, Disturbing, and Dangerous World of the Unconscious

From my list on consciousness that demonstrates there is more to life than we know.

Why am I passionate about this?

As a journalist, I'm driven to find stories that have not been covered before and to make clear the incomprehensible. I like people, and I like asking questions. I've covered wars and disasters, and on any given day, I could expect to see people at their very worst and at their very best. With my book about comas, I've met some of the finest people of my career, doctors, nurses, and other clinicians who are fighting the system, and coma survivors who are simply fighting to get through each and every day. This is the story I am now driven to tell.

This book simply blew me away. I sat down to speed-read through it when researching my coma book and became instantly hooked and took my time.

Dr. van Lommel takes us on a journey of discovery into the mysterious world of consciousness and its multiple levels and turns current understanding on its head. I loved the way the author steered me with ease into the realms of neuroscience and quantum mechanics without leaving me scratching my head.

This is so much more than a book about consciousness. This is a fantastic read for anyone wanting to know who we really are.

Dr. Pim van Lommel, a renowned cardiologist, was so inspired by the stories his patients told of their Near Death Experiences (NDEs) that he became the first medical practitioner to risk his reputation with a full, systematic trial into the phenomenon. He interviewed 344 heart patients at his hospital who had all clinically died, some for five minutes or longer, before being resuscitated. Of these, 62 - or 18 per cent - reported some ongoing experience after the medical monitors had pronounced them to be dead. Van Lommel claims these are authentic experiences which cannot be reduced to the imagination,…
