Laing's book list on creativity, self-awareness, and living well

Laing F. Rikkers Why Laing loves this book

This is one of the clearest books I’ve read on creativity.

Elizabeth Gilbert encourages both curiosity and discipline in writing. She also talks about the importance of timing and being ready to capture ideas when they come. Fear and self-doubt are always around, but one must be receptive and ready when the muse appears.

She tells great stories, which makes the book particularly fun and readable.

Rebecca E. Williams Why Rebecca loves this book

It isn’t often that a book comes along that feels surprisingly like sitting in meditation. Soulful Simplicity is that book. I loved the tempo and the energy of it. This book is such a beautiful combination of the art and practice of giving up what does not belong in a life of purpose. I have a copy on my desk to remind me to keep things simple and heartfelt. Courtney Carver has a lovely podcast with her daughter called Soul and Wit which offers us yet another reminder to be kind to ourselves no matter where we are on the journey of self-discovery and joy.

2 authors picked Soulful Simplicity as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Courtney Carver shows us the power of simplicity to improve our health, build more meaningful relationships, and relieve stress in our professional and personal lives.

We are often on a quest for more—we give in to pressure every day to work more, own more, and do more. For Carver, this constant striving had to come to a stop when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Stress was like gasoline on the fire of symptoms, and it became clear that she needed to root out the physical and psychological clutter that were the source of her debt and discontent.

Book cover of The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World

Martyn Bould Author Of More Than Just The Climb

From my list on why “now” is important.

Why am I passionate about this?

The theme through all of the books on my list is that we can be in control of our health and happiness as long as we’re truly aware of this gift of life. Having been born into a modest family in England and leaving almost 60 years ago to live and work throughout the Caribbean, has opened my eyes to what creates happiness in this wonderful journey of life. From my years based in the Cayman Islands with its rich multicultural society, I’ve had a full life of working across both construction and cultural development, and with travel to more than 120 countries. It’s important to embrace the gifts I’ve both earned and received.

Martyn's book list on why “now” is important

Martyn Bould Why Martyn loves this book

I loved this book because of the breadth of cultures covered by the authors.

I found the Dalai Lama’s exile from his own country and his forgiveness of all those that had persecuted him meaningful. Similarly, Desmond Tutu had forgiven all those that had racially persecuted his people in South Africa. Both were able to find “joy” and total happiness in meeting and laughing together.

The book’s relevance to so many of our Caribbean people over the years and the cultural work I’ve done here made this book an outstanding lesson for all of us to readjust our compass.

I really enjoyed this book because it is raw, honest, and deeply human.

It is a collection of advice columns, but it reads like a series of letters from a friend. Strayed is vulnerable and unfiltered, which is refreshing and thought-provoking. I like how she blends personal stories with good advice.

I seek to be clear and intentional in my writing like she is. I greatly appreciate her strong voice and confidence.

Book cover of This Book Just Ate My Dog!

Omar Abed Author Of The Book That Almost Rhymed

From my list on self-aware picture books.

Why am I passionate about this?

I always felt like books were mysterious and elusive works of art. When creating them occurred to me, I started to think, “What is a book, really, and what does it mean to publish one?” This over-analysis of books makes me appreciate authors who are able to step back and see books for what they really are–pages and ink. Distilling it down to that makes writing and publishing a book feel more accessible to me.

Omar's book list on self-aware picture books

Omar Abed Why Omar loves this book

This book made such a clever use of the “gutter” in the middle of the book.

I have an irrational fear of picture book gutters and margins after formatting my first self-published book and making sure all the important stuff (including the text) stays in the frame.

This book gave me the feeling of ownership over the gutter that I never knew I needed.

Book cover of What Do You Do With an Idea?

Tina Koopersmith Author Of What Am I?

From my list on young children to build self compassion.

Why am I passionate about this?

Children feel all their emotions, but I learned to suppress many emotions to avoid criticism. The youngest, I learned to not trust my intuition. I was taught that the mind was the path to success. In my chosen medical profession, physicians use intellect to heal bodies. The interconnection of thoughts, emotions, energy as well as interconnections between people and the environment are ignored. This separation from all of me was sapping me of the joy of living a full life. During my self healing integration journey: I uncovered limiting beliefs, reconnected with my heart, and dove deep into the source of my pleasure. Bringing this awareness to light should be healing.

Tina's book list on young children to build self compassion

Tina Koopersmith Why Tina loves this book

This book encourages young children to believe in their thoughts, their ideas, their inner knowing.

This book encourages creativity, self-compassion, motivation, and action. It encourages young children to persevere and not give up hope, even if others cannot appreciate their ideas and their goals. It reminds children that a “NO” is not a failure, but just an opportunity to pivot or change tactics.
