87 Books Like Italian Shoes

All of the five or six novels of Murakami’s that I’ve read feature an introverted protagonist not quite at home in the world, someone who wonders about reality and latches on to other strange people. Norwegian Wood, named after a song by the Beatles, may be the most accessible and this-worldly of his books.  It’s a coming-of-age story about a Japanese college student who falls in love at the end of the 1960s and never quite resolves his feelings. But after you read Norwegian Wood – assuming you like it – be sure to go on to Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore and IQ84, which I feel is his masterpiece.

A brilliant book that debunks damaging myths about people who enjoy being off by themselves. It contains a devastating takedown of the misconception that mass killers are usually discontented introverts. Instead, people like the Unabomber and school shooters wish they fit in better with society and do not resemble those who are loners by choice. Anneli Rufus argues that true loners like Isaac Newton, Michelangelo, Haruki Murakami, and Rene Descartes have contributed immeasurably to our civilization.

I loved the relaxed, on-point tone of this book about the experience of being an introvert, full of anecdotes that flip the switch on the ways society caters to extroverts. The author, who is Swedish, tells a hilarious story about how he was supposedly punished during his military service by not being allowed to join the rest of his unit on their raucous bar night out. In fact he was relieved to finally have some time to himself when he could read a book and listen to quiet music. This book would make a terrific gift for someone in your life who you wished understood introverts better. 

In most introvert-theme fiction, not much “happens.” Instead, the author focuses on the texture of characters’ thoughts, experiences, and memories. I found this novel, by an Austrian writer not well known in the English-speaking world, fascinating for two reasons. First, it explores the life, work, and thinking process of an obsessive genius – someone introverted to the nth degree. And second, it does so in a book of just two paragraphs, going on and on in musical prose where the repetitive rhythms of the sentences have just as much impact as what they’re narrating. The architectural genius in Correction is partly based on Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, which added interest for me since I find Wittgenstein a uniquely inspiring figure.

Imagine being so allergic to human touch that it is impossible to have romantic love in your life.

Jubilee Jenkins is a character you will root for, cry over, and sometimes wish you could kick in the butt. She’s forced to face her fears after her mother dies, and she even gets a job - one that deals with the public.

Will she die? Will she be motivated to find a cure? Or will she spend her life longing–especially after she develops feelings for a man?

This book is full of hope, despair, and yearning, but those words alone don’t do it justice. It is also satisfyingly uplifting.  

A contemporary storyline mixed with historical details give book one in this four-book, gothic fantasy series a rich backdrop for family conflict on an unexpectedly dark scale as the main character, Lena, faces a cursed countdown to her 16th birthday. The movie version of this book is good, but as often is the case, the book is better. Stellar writing, plotting and a believable, swoon-worthy, and fated romance combined with an intriguing cast of characters make this book one of my favorites for coming-of-age magical stories. 

I ate Kristen Callihan's book right up. It made me feel like I was biting into the most perfect dessert. It gave me a rush but also made me think about my own life, especially where I’m at with my acting career. I was drawn into our hero's secret passion for baking, which made his pastries feel like they weren’t just food; they were little love notes.

It inspired me to bake delicious desserts for my husband, to let him know I love him without saying a word. Each description of his creations made my mouth water and my heart melt a little. It reminded me how the simple act of sharing something you pour your heart into can become a beautiful language of affection. I only put the book down to pick up a dessert fork. I probably gained 5 pounds reading this one!

Although Rotters begins in Chicago, after a bus kills Joey’s mother, he is sent to live with his estranged father in rural Iowa, who holds a very morbid secret. While the fictional Bloughton, Iowa is by far the smallest midwestern city on my list, the vivid images Kraus uses to describe the town, its residents, and the underground world of Joey’s father have convinced me this town exists. And I don’t want to go there. Rotters is a story that is tragic, macabre, and riveting all at once.

This book features a child psychologist who is our unreliable narrator, and we are straight into her life with no introduction. We are in her head from the outset, witness to all her internal dialogue, her drunken episodes, and the minutiae of her claustrophobic lifestyle; her only entertainment spying on her neighbors as she now  lives apart from her husband and child for unknown reasons.

The narrowness of her agoraphobic life is well depicted, and I was keen to discover what events had led her from a successful career and happy family to this depressed and depressing way of life.

This novella has some of my favorite descriptions of the natural world and I love how it plays with its protagonist’s sense of time.

The lead character and his relationship to the forest draw from the mythology of the Green Man, and it’s a fantastic example of how much the narration style can be affected by the viewpoint character.

Tesh’s pose is dreamlike and slow, and all of its elements—the plot, the characters, the relationships—unfold slowly, like winter melting into spring.

Stories rife with forest magic and characters who learn to let go of past hurts are two of my favorite things, and Silver in the Wood executes both beautifully.
