56 Books Like How to Hug a Pufferfish

This is a children’s book that tells the story about a sweet chimp who is looking for a hug from a variety of different animals and can’t seem to get one.

The story evokes strong feelings from young children about rejection, the need to be connected to other people, and the need to belong. I love this book because there are very few words in it, so it gives you and your child the opportunity to fill in the gaps with what you think is happening. 

Also, talking about experiences of rejection can be very difficult for children, and this experience can create opportunities for your child to speak with you about times when they have wanted comfort and haven’t received it.

I couldn’t resist a title with two of my favorite things, hugs and birds. (In fact, I’ve written early readers about birds.) Bird Hugs, by author-illustrator Ged Adamson, tells the story of Bernard, a sweet little bird with wings too long to fly. He tries to fly many times, but isn’t successful. He feels useless and lonely until he meets an orangutan who needs a hug. It turns out Bernard’s long wings are just perfect for hugging. One hug leads to another and soon all the animals come to Bernard when they need comfort. Bird Hugs tells a lovely story with a positive message about fitting in when you’re different and, of course, how a hug can brighten your day. 

I was delighted when Eric Carle wrote Hugs and Kisses for The Grouchy Ladybug because I read many of his books during my preschool story time at the library. They are just right for the under-five age group. Hug and Kisses for The Grouchy Ladybug is a small and cute book, perfect for little hands to hold. Like many of Carle’s stories, each page has a different animal that young children can proudly identify. Each animal shows what happens when they receive hugs and kisses. They smile, clap, and jump across the page. Fans of The Grouchy Ladybug will enjoy learning that even the grouchy ladybug smiles when she receives hugs and kisses. 

Jean Reidy’s Group Hug begins with a slug “needing someone to hug.” Slug offers a hug to a lonely beetle and together they then offer a hug to a mouse. The circle of comfort grows with animals of different sizes and emotions. When a bear comes along, the group is afraid, but slug presses on to include the bear. Reidy’s rhyming text and Chou’s bright art beautifully show that both the hugger and huggee experience joy from the hug. This makes another great story time read to spread kindness and understanding. 

As an author, I understand the challenge of packing meaningful and educational information in a children’s picture book. Yet, this book achieves this beautifully with its colorful illustrations. It covers a vast range of topics, from animals and marine habitats to oceanography and ecological concepts.

As I turned the pages, I felt like I was swimming alongside marvelous narwhals with their spiral tusks while exploring the lives of glowing jellyfish and diving into a kelp forest. Earth’s Incredible Oceans is an underwater journey among many spectacular marine creatures, some of which are not around anymore.

The book is aimed at 7 to 9-year-old kids, but I enjoy it too, especially the informative pages on “changing oceans” covering pollution, fishing, and other environmental issues.

I’m an ocean swimmer and snorkeler, and this book took me to depths and places beyond my previous experience. The free-diving aspect is inspirational. Based on the award-winning movie, My Octopus Teacher, Ross and Craig’s journey has encouraged me to look at octopus and other wildlife differently.

It’s an extraordinarily moving story, both beautiful and sad. I hope the images and content will inspire people to protect our oceans.

From the Welcome to the Museum series comes this captivating (oversized) nonfiction book that takes young readers (7 to 12) on an incredible journey through the world's oceans. I think the stunning illustrations wonderfully guide kids into the lives of fascinating animals, from whale sharks to manatees and from small tropical fish in coral reefs to amazing mollusks.

With the author being a dedicated marine biologist, the book effectively addresses the environmental challenges facing our oceans and their inhabitants–an essential aspect for any book discussing our Planet. One final note: in my opinion, this beautiful book deserves a spot on the coffee table!

I must have read this book aloud to children at least fifty times, and I never got tired of reading it. The words have such a wonderful cadence to them. The children will get caught up in the rhythm and rhyme.

I loved the message of not only being able to change your life by changing your attitude, but also the way another fish helps him see that. I think that it’s sometimes hard to be kind to grumpy people, and this book shows that it’s worth the effort. 

Unlike the books I’ve recommended above, Citizens of the Sea is packed with gorgeous four-color photographs by some of the world’s top underwater photographers. The close-ups are downright amazing. National Geographic made a brilliant call in having Nancy Knowlton write the text. Not only is she a renowned coral reef biologist and the former Sant Chair for Marine Science at the Smithsonian National Museum for Natural History, she also writes so lucidly and engagingly that even her articles for peer-reviewed journals make engrossing reading. 

If you have a teenager wanting to be a marine biologist, this is the book to read! It is a coming-of-age book but also one of great charm and devotion to marine life. The tale and the writing are irresistible. It is so rare for an author to personalize marine biology, especially for teenagers.

This book does a remarkable thing. I loved it because it was a great story about teenagers who somehow managed to connect their love for the shoreline, and it even managed to give us a lot of great biology. Children often want to be marine biologists but their love is usually not very well connected to the real worlds of the ocean.

This book is a really great Natural History book. It puts teenagers in the mud, collecting clams, and doing things marine biologists do. Yet it has a heart—a really great book.
