75 Books Like Earth's Incredible Oceans

I love this book because it introduces our beloved children (6-10 years old) to one of the most mysterious and elusive creatures on Earth: the giant squid. Just think about it: until 2006, no humans had even seen one of these animals alive!

I study dolphins and whales, and sperm whales hunt these creatures in the cold and dark depths of the oceans. But while even kids know something about sperm whales, giant squid remains a mystery to most of us. How do they hunt? What do they eat? How do they breed? Award-winning author Candace Fleming and illustrator Eric Rohmann do a wonderful job of describing and painting this little-understood species.

I write children’s books because I believe young minds hold the key to saving our troubled oceans. To achieve this, though, we must educate kids and encourage them to take action. This nonfiction book excels at that, inspiring and teaching children to become the next generation of environmental activists.

It is an important book because it explores the five oceans as one interconnected ecosystem, highlighting their critical role in sustaining a livable planet. It goes a step further by explaining actionable steps we can take to help. This message resonates not only with children ages 8 to 12 but with adults, too (and I love that!) The eye-catching illustrations (which, of course, include my dearies, dolphins, and whales) enhance the appeal and engagement for both young readers and educators.

From the Welcome to the Museum series comes this captivating (oversized) nonfiction book that takes young readers (7 to 12) on an incredible journey through the world's oceans. I think the stunning illustrations wonderfully guide kids into the lives of fascinating animals, from whale sharks to manatees and from small tropical fish in coral reefs to amazing mollusks.

With the author being a dedicated marine biologist, the book effectively addresses the environmental challenges facing our oceans and their inhabitants–an essential aspect for any book discussing our Planet. One final note: in my opinion, this beautiful book deserves a spot on the coffee table!

It seems the author (and illustrator) of this book, and I share a passion for the oceans, their wondrous creatures, and the thrill of big adventures in nature. We also appear to share a love for the often misunderstood sharks, marine animals that many humans fear.

In this nonfiction children’s book (for 7 to 12 years old), the author dives into the lives of the most feared of all sharks: the great white. She tracks these creatures in their hunting ground off the Farallon Islands, just 30 miles off San Francisco, California, revealing their remarkable hunting techniques.

The book is informative for kids and serves as a call to action to protect these amazing creatures, whose numbers are dwindling by the day.

I think this book is a genius. It’s a great example of a character-driven early reader graphic novel that brilliantly keeps it simple while fully exploring the friendship between a narwhal whale and a jellyfish.

The hilarious dialogue and simple but expressive illustrations make this one of my favorites, and its appeal to all kinds of readers is the reason this is a bestseller. 

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and believe young readers will, too!

It traces billions of years of ocean history from “when the Earth was young and new…so hot, rock melted and boiled,” through millennia of marvelous creatures, to the present day with children exploring the shore. In eminently readable rhyme, it conveys an impressive amount of information in an interesting and accessible way.

One of the best parts of the books is in the back: an ingeniously illustrated timeline. Illustrations are dynamic and dramatic, some literally exploding with color and action. They are a joy to look at and will certainly help kiddos understand the science concepts presented.

This is a beautifully laid-out big book full of realistically painted marine creatures. In addition, the illustrations are similar to the author's (Van’s) style. This gave the author a beautiful blend of realistic paintings and shorter, simpler writing. This led to Van’s book layout on his text and pictures having a great influence on his book.

The book's writing style is short, simple, yet informative.

You cannot go wrong with any of the board books in the Hello, World! series.

This one about ocean animals is a recent go-to in our home, and I was fascinated to learn that octopuses have three hearts, blue blood, and nine brains! With bright illustrations and easy-to-understand yet captivating scientific information, these books are wonderful for curious, young scientists eager to learn about God’s world.

My kids also love the Solar System and My Body books in this series. There’s no age too young to start teaching our kids about the intricacies of God’s creation, and this series is an excellent resource for families looking for engaging, scientifically rich books that do just that.  

This book is claustrophobic, unflinching, and horrifying, so I can’t watch videos from seafloor subs, drones, or observatories. I’m used to sci-fi that takes place in the cold black isolation of a spaceship, but here we have the cold black isolation of the seabed, which triggers all the thalassophobia. Add the meticulous routines of a crew surviving in a place where humans shouldn’t be and, above all, the awful psychological pull of the void, and you get deliciously potent nightmare fuel.

But maybe more than that, I love that Watts is one of those authors, like Richard Morgan, who creates spec-fic characters with questionable morality, who can and do alarm the reader. Everyone I know who’s ever read this book has never forgotten it, shudders when I mention it and knows who Lenie Clark is. 

Imagination + humor. The opening line of this books is one of my favorites – “Kidnapping children is not a good idea. All the same, sometimes it has to be done.” – Ibbotson was a genius at combining fantastical settings with humor. This book in particular spoke to my childhood fantasies of taking care of strange animals and visiting exotic locales. It’s a whole lot of fun, like all her books.
