The books I picked & why

Book cover of The Global Ocean

Maddalena Bearzi Why I love this book

I write children’s books because I believe young minds hold the key to saving our troubled oceans. To achieve this, though, we must educate kids and encourage them to take action. This nonfiction book excels at that, inspiring and teaching children to become the next generation of environmental activists.

It is an important book because it explores the five oceans as one interconnected ecosystem, highlighting their critical role in sustaining a livable planet. It goes a step further by explaining actionable steps we can take to help. This message resonates not only with children ages 8 to 12 but with adults, too (and I love that!) The eye-catching illustrations (which, of course, include my dearies, dolphins, and whales) enhance the appeal and engagement for both young readers and educators.

Why should I read it?

1 author picked The Global Ocean as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 8, 9, 10, and 11.

What is this book about?

The global ocean is in trouble. This beautiful and important book explores the issues — and what we can do to help.

Though we think of Earth’s five oceans as separate and distinct, they are actually a linked system of circulating water that is one single ocean — the global ocean. This comprehensive and accessible overview explores the global ocean’s enormous influence on the planet, as well as humans’ often-detrimental influence on the ocean. But it also highlights some of the many ways people are working to restore and heal the global ocean — from everyday actions to large institutional…

Book cover of Giant Squid

Maddalena Bearzi Why I love this book

I love this book because it introduces our beloved children (6-10 years old) to one of the most mysterious and elusive creatures on Earth: the giant squid. Just think about it: until 2006, no humans had even seen one of these animals alive!

I study dolphins and whales, and sperm whales hunt these creatures in the cold and dark depths of the oceans. But while even kids know something about sperm whales, giant squid remains a mystery to most of us. How do they hunt? What do they eat? How do they breed? Award-winning author Candace Fleming and illustrator Eric Rohmann do a wonderful job of describing and painting this little-understood species.

4 authors picked Giant Squid as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 6, 7, 8, and 9.

What is this book about?

The giant squid is one of the most elusive creatures in the world. As large as whales, they hide beyond reach deep within the sea, forcing scientists to piece together their story from those clues they leave behind.

An injured whale's ring-shaped scars indicate an encounter with a giant squid. A piece of beak broken off in the whale's belly; a flash of ink dispersed as a blinding defense to allow the squid to escape-- these fragments of proof were all we had . . . until a giant squid was finally filmed in its natural habitat only two years…

Book cover of Earth's Incredible Oceans

Maddalena Bearzi Why I love this book

As an author, I understand the challenge of packing meaningful and educational information in a children’s picture book. Yet, this book achieves this beautifully with its colorful illustrations. It covers a vast range of topics, from animals and marine habitats to oceanography and ecological concepts.

As I turned the pages, I felt like I was swimming alongside marvelous narwhals with their spiral tusks while exploring the lives of glowing jellyfish and diving into a kelp forest. Earth’s Incredible Oceans is an underwater journey among many spectacular marine creatures, some of which are not around anymore.

The book is aimed at 7 to 9-year-old kids, but I enjoy it too, especially the informative pages on “changing oceans” covering pollution, fishing, and other environmental issues.

Book cover of Neighborhood Sharks: Hunting with the Great Whites of California's Farallon Islands

Maddalena Bearzi Why I love this book

It seems the author (and illustrator) of this book, and I share a passion for the oceans, their wondrous creatures, and the thrill of big adventures in nature. We also appear to share a love for the often misunderstood sharks, marine animals that many humans fear.

In this nonfiction children’s book (for 7 to 12 years old), the author dives into the lives of the most feared of all sharks: the great white. She tracks these creatures in their hunting ground off the Farallon Islands, just 30 miles off San Francisco, California, revealing their remarkable hunting techniques.

The book is informative for kids and serves as a call to action to protect these amazing creatures, whose numbers are dwindling by the day.

1 author picked Neighborhood Sharks as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 7, 8, 9, and 10.

What is this book about?

A few miles from San Francisco lives a population of the ocean's largest and most famous predators. Each fall, while the city's inhabitants dine on steaks, salads, and sandwiches, the great white sharks return to California's Farallon Islands to dine on their favourite meal: the seals that live on the island's rocky coasts. Massive, fast, and perfectly adapted to hunting after 11 million years of evolution, the great whites are among the planet's most fearsome, fascinating, and least understood animals.

In the fall of 2012, Katherine Roy visited the Farallons with the scientists who study the islands' shark population. She…
