100 Books Like From Brick & Darkness

I love a story that features flawed characters who stand up for themselves and fight for what they believe in when it counts the most. Part science-fiction, part fantasy, part nail-biting thriller, part teenage angst.

This book is a heart-pounding fight of good versus evil that throws the protagonist and her friends into a baptism-by-fire situation and fight for survival. This beauty is one of the most imaginative tales I ever read. If you start out reading this book doubting the existence of dragons and parallel universes, you’ll change your tune by the time you finish the story.   

Some books keep you up all night, grab you by the throat, and don’t let go until the last page. This book is one. This heart-pounding, fast-paced page-turner holds nothing back and inserts readers face-first into the heart-wrenching reality of parental abuse and neglect. 

I love how this dark coming-of-age tale is woven with threads of teenage angst and dysfunctional relationships. My heart broke for the teenager thrust into an impossible situation who must make life-changing decisions based on nothing more than her instincts.

It should be required reading for every high school student as a lesson on what it means to take responsibility for one’s self by facing one’s challenges rather than looking away. 

Give me a YA novel that begins with a normal high school setting and suddenly veers into an utterly out-of-this-world scenario. This book takes the perennial issue of teenage angst and sends it into another plane. The cast is a group of believable but imperfect characters who are ordinary kids doing extraordinary things. 

The detailed descriptions of both the out-of-body experiences as well as the places in the astral plane that Abby and Logan travel are so exquisitely vivid that readers cross over from fantasy to the possibility of the experience being real. Readers are taken on a wild intergalactic rollercoaster ride at a breakneck pace. Reading it is as though Space Mountain and Lost in Space were celestial parents who gave birth to new species. 

Show me a gritty, graphic post-apocalyptic tale that still manages to create believable teenage characters with equal amounts of angst and audacity, and I’ll show you a fabulous tale you won’t soon forget. I held my breath when an ordinary teenager and her friend, still grieving their lost families and life as they knew it, stared death in the face as they made a perilous journey wrought with danger at every turn. They fought for survival while trying to save the life of a little girl.

I marveled at this spine-tingling story of survival, young love, loss, trust, and the inner strength one must summon to face adversity created by both human fallibility and fate. 

I appreciated how this book lingered in my brain long after finishing it, both because of the fast-paced action and because of the compelling characters. I was never a hundred percent certain who were the “good guys” and who were the “bad guys” which kept me glued to the pages until I was finished.

It really was an edge-of-your-seat page turner. I loved the gritty vibe, sharp wit, and brutal storylines that reminded me of old YA novels pushing boundaries of what is acceptable and what isn’t.  

This book. The love story and the scenes between the leads had me swooning.

Seriously, I loved every second of the tension between the main characters: Brooke and Calvin. Brooke’s brother is in jail for murdering his best friend, who was also Calvin’s older brother. And no one knows why he did it.

They live in a small Texas town and their families have, for obvious reasons, become enemies. Their love is forbidden, but they can’t stay away from each other, even when their families are so important to them.

At the same time, the shadow of Brooke’s brother murdering Calvin adds a complication to their budding romance. This book has love, family, and a mystery to unravel and I loved every second of it. 

I adore the relationships throughout this story. It’s about a child prodigy detective who, as an adult, gets pulled back into detecting. But she’s not alone—she has a Scooby gang cast, and I am here for the relationships.

The way they understand each other is just lovely. It shows up in how they talk to and look out for each other. You see it in the way they understand the unspoken moments and support one another. I loved every moment of it.

House of Earth and Blood was the first new adult fantasy book that I read that made me fall back in love with the fantasy genre. I had rediscovered my love for reading in my late teens after not reading much for a few years. Bryce Quinlan reminded me a lot of myself. In that, she was the first lead female character who isn’t thin and petite. Rather, Bryce is curvy and different from other women that Sarah J. Maas has written. I instantly felt drawn in by Bryce and her carefree attitude in the first half of the book. Her strength is admirable and authentic. Her story and struggles captured me much like many readers.

Though Bryce does have her struggles as being defined as a “party girl,” she is so much more than the label. Beneath it all, Bryce is someone you can’t help but to root for,… show more.

Mistaken identity, a deadly game, and confusing desires make for a fun read. This book was one of my instant favourites because of its sassy style and the female main character psycho-analysing the people around her because of her studies in psychology.

Rowan is determined to find her mother’s killer, but her plan falls apart when a demon kidnaps her and accuses her of being someone else.

I love the way she plays two roles as herself and her shadow self and how she uses that to play games with Orion, who may or may not want to kill her. It makes for a unique character and a very interesting story.

Eighteen-year-old Mac is still coming to terms with the murder of his best friend, Connor, the fourth and final victim of a serial killer who terrorized their community the previous summer. Stumbling upon a note Connor wrote to him the night he died that suggests Connor knew the identity of the killer, Mac embarks on his own investigation to learn what the victims may have had in common. The author deftly threads throughout his story tantalizing clues that draw readers deeper into the mystery, building wire-taut tension as the characters move inexorably toward a resolution that readers won’t see coming but is ultimately satisfying. Far more than a skilfully crafted whodunit, Keep This to Yourself is a compelling coming-of-age story that explores the evolution of friendship and the consequence of truth.
