I gave a standing ovation to this lesson in being careful about what one wishes for and facing the consequences when one’s wishes come true in a heart-pounding fight of good versus evil. This gem is one of the most imaginative and descriptively written tales I ever read.

I could almost feel the heat from the sinister, demonic Ifrit breathing fire and the slash of its tail across the protagonist’s face. If you start out reading this book doubting the existence of djinns and parallel universes, you’ll be questioning your beliefs when you get to the end.

I love a story that features flawed characters who stand up for themselves and fight for what they believe in when it counts the most. Part science-fiction, part fantasy, part nail-biting thriller, part teenage angst.

This beauty is one of the most imaginative tales I ever read. If you start out reading this book doubting the existence of dragons and parallel universes, you’ll change your tune by the time you finish the story.   

Some books keep you up all night, grab you by the throat, and don’t let go until the last page. This book is one. This heart-pounding, fast-paced page-turner holds nothing back and inserts readers face-first into the heart-wrenching reality of parental abuse and neglect. 

I love how this dark coming-of-age tale is woven with threads of teenage angst and dysfunctional relationships. My heart broke for the teenager thrust into an impossible situation who must make life-changing decisions based on nothing more than her instincts.

It should be required reading for every high school student as a lesson on what it means to take responsibility for one’s self by facing one’s challenges rather than looking away. 

Give me a YA novel that begins with a normal high school setting and suddenly veers into an utterly out-of-this-world scenario. This book takes the perennial issue of teenage angst and sends it into another plane. The cast is a group of believable but imperfect characters who are ordinary kids doing extraordinary things. 

The detailed descriptions of both the out-of-body experiences as well as the places in the astral plane that Abby and Logan travel are so exquisitely vivid that readers cross over from fantasy to the possibility of the experience being real. Readers are taken on a wild intergalactic rollercoaster ride at a breakneck pace. Reading it is as though Space Mountain and Lost in Space were celestial parents who gave birth to new species. 

This delightful chronicle of the infamous Blizzard of 1888 and its impact upon the population of New York City was published on the storm’s 100th anniversary. Prior to penning this book, Ms. Cable authored nine others over nearly two decades—including several on American social history—and served as editor/writer for The New Yorker and Harper’s Bazaar (among other publications). In my view, this prior experience was key to her uncommon ability to consistently evoke the vivid images of the trials and tribulations experienced by numerous real-life figures (some famous), and to create a broader social context throughout the book. For these reasons, hers was among the most enjoyable accounts of the Great Blizzard I’ve had the pleasure of reading.

I loved the story of sixteen-year-old Lizzie, who married Mister Stonecypher in 1837 because “she wouldn’t have hurt his feelings for the world.”

All of the classic pioneer story elements are here, as backdrop to the tale of Lizzie and Wash coming to know and love each other. I loved the grit and authenticity and the touches of humor. I felt compelled to keep reading, especially during a harrowing journey through a blizzard, and was emotionally engaged from start to finish. 

Five total strangers trapped in a car together, during a blizzard trying to get home against mounting impossible odds – what’s not to like? I love believable situations which you know as a reader have so much potential to take a deadly turn! 

When a storm strands Mira at the airport with no way to get home, she welcomes the kind offer of sharing a rental car with a woman from her flight. But when this also involves another three people, who all seem to have their own personal baggage and agendas, you know this is not going to be a smooth ride. As if driving in a storm isn’t enough of a problem, personal items keep going missing, and it soon becomes obvious that one of the five is trying to make sure they don’t all make it back alive! This book is ideal for those who simply want to enjoy the plethora of great visuals which capture the splendor of New York City’s most memorable blizzards. Covering twelve such events between 1888 and 1994, this oversized book contains, by far, the greatest number of photos I have ever seen in a single compilation. Each photo’s caption also includes the source detail—something rare in most other accounts. Ample text accompanies each photo, making this a most pleasurable and informative read. 

I picked up this book for the setting alone as the Scottish Highlands is one of my favourite destinations and the idea of a suspenseful mystery set there was just too good to resist.

The story takes place over a snowy New Year’s Eve in a hunting lodge surrounded by the mist and mountains of Scotland. While I didn’t find any of the characters particularly sympathetic (which was possibly the point!), the atmospheric setting more than made up for that, and I enjoyed imagining what I might have done had I been one of the members of this party, trapped in this isolated place. 

Eric Fisher has been Chief Meteorologist at WBZ-TV in Boston since April 2013, and was an on-camera meteorologist for The Weather Channel before that. In this 2021 book, Fisher is able to strike the perfect balance between the “what’s so” and the “why” behind these historic storms (as well as with other types of natural disasters affecting New Englanders). This rare quality, augmented by his meticulous research of historical accounts of these events, including the impressive array of meteorological records broken along the way, enables him to present an enjoyable, educational read—especially for the interested layperson.
