Afro Samurai meets The Sword of Kaigen in this anime-inspired novella

This is no revenge story. I ain't got time for that. I've got errands to run and things to do and barely enough time to make it home before sundown. I don't care why folks are going around stealing ink. I don't care why the monks are acting kinda strange. I don't care that everybody is expecting me to save them. I might be a Sistah Samurai but those days playing hero were back when my knees didn't ache, and I wasn't the only one left. So leave me…

Ms. Walters resets the bar for young adult fantasy: mixing modern challenges and conflicts with the deepest old-world lore, where fairy tales and horror meet and intertwine. I love a good hero’s journey but it’s not common to find a story that truly honors the original Irish mythos concerning fairies—often feeling more paranormal than “fantasy”. The MC is the rare example of “not like other girls” done right… because she honestly isn’t (and she’s not caught up in some unhinged love triangle either). All she wants is to understand why so much weird has surrounded her family for 200 years. And the fairies definitely trigger that uncanny valley reaction (in both characters and readers), at least initially. It’s not often you find stories like these anymore— echoes Lewis Carol, L. Frank Baum, and Neil Gaiman.

Unknown Author Why Rivendell’s loves this book

This is nonfiction so not a “fun” read in the traditional sense. But as someone who pursued education in archaeology, it’s always been important to me to view ancient texts through the lens of their origin cultures. This includes the Bible. The late Dr. Heiser places in laser focus how Bronze Age and 2nd Temple Period Jews would have perceived reality, providing a different framework for unpacking Biblical texts than most modern laypeople (and even many Biblical scholars) are accustomed to. Paradigm-shifting, even.

In The Unseen Realm, Dr. Michael Heiser examines the ancient context of Scripture, explaining how its supernatural worldview can help us grow in our understanding of God. He illuminates intriguing and amazing passages of the Bible that have been hiding in plain sight. You'll find yourself engaged in an enthusiastic pursuit of the truth, resulting in a new appreciation for God's Word.

Why wasn't Eve surprised when the serpent spoke to her?

As my first book by the author - it was not a fast start, but my partner, who introduced me to the book helped setup the stage and ease me into the story. I was hooked. The many characters and dynamics were keeping me on the edge of my seat many a time. It wasn't that I couldn’t put the book down, but needed to continue with the next book as soon as possible… then the next and so on.

One of fantasy’s finest next-generation storytellers continues to break new ground.

Michael J. Sullivan’s trailblazing career began with the breakout success of his Riyria series: full-bodied, spellbinding fantasy adventures whose imaginative scope and sympathetic characters won a devoted readership and comparisons to fantasy masters Brandon Sanderson, Scott Lynch, and J.R.R. Tolkien himself. Now Age of Myth inaugurates an original five-book series.

Since time immemorial, humans have worshipped the gods they call Fhrey, truly a race apart: invincible in battle, masters of magic, and seemingly immortal. But when a god falls to a human blade, the balance of power between humans…

Book cover of Theft of Swords

Andy Peloquin Author Of Assassin

From my list on dark assassins and bloody action.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve always loved the darker side of fantasy. While heroes, knights, and handsome kings can occasionally be enjoyable, I want to know the other characters who have suffered, hurt, lost, grieved, and been hardened by grim circumstances and cruel fate. Those characters demonstrate the resilience of human nature and how goodness truly can exist even in the harshest environment. I love using this darkness in my own novels to show that even the tiniest spark can shine immensely bright—a true testament to the indefatigability of our spirits.

Andy Peloquin Why Andy loves this book

Royce Melborn is exactly the assassin I’d expect: scowling, suspicious, irritable, prone to violence, and scarred by hard life. So, of course, he ends up forming a team with Hadrian Blackwater, the most cheerful, upbeat swordsman in the world.

The “mismatched friends” and “grumpy/sunshine” flavor of the story was immensely fun—reminiscent of all my favorite buddy cop TV shows and movies—and did a wonderful job of anchoring me to these two characters as they fought their way through a world determined to harm them.

The dynamic between the characters is mirrored by a twisty-turny plot, a fascinatingly detailed world, and an epic storyline that kept me turning the pages to find out what came next.

Royce Melborn, a skilled thief, and his mercenary partner, Hadrian Blackwater, make a profitable living carrying out dangerous assignments for conspiring nobles-until they are hired to pilfer a famed sword. Andy's book list on dark assassins and bloody action

Andy Peloquin Why Andy loves this book

This book was one of the first assassin books ever written, and it’s a masterpiece of classic fantasy. The character is exactly as brooding and dour as I’d expected, but the moment he saves a young woman and her two orphaned companions, I understood there was so much more to him. And over the course of the book—and all his books—I saw those layers stripped away piece by piece and the grief-stricken man beneath.

The story was action-packed in exactly the way I wanted it to be, but it also profoundly explored nobility, morality, belief, and faith. The final scenes of the trilogy had me in tears, something not easily accomplished.
