Why read it?

3 authors picked Age of Myth as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

I have read the six books in Michael J. Sullivan’s First Empire series multiple times, in part because of the sweeping storyline that spans the entire series. Although the main protagonist is male, for me, the real heroes are Persephone and Suri.

As with my other recommendations, these characters respond to extraordinary circumstances by becoming extraordinary themselves.

A vibrant, well-crafted opener to the Legends of the First Empire series. This book tackles the social divide between humans and powerful, almost elf-like beings long considered to be gods. That convention is immediately turned upside-down when a man kills one of these beings and is labeled the “god-killer.”  Consequences and unlikely alliances begin to unfold, all of it intelligently realized and told in a writing style that is pleasant to consume, even when the pacing slows a bit.

From Wayne's list on unlikely heroes in magical worlds.

Melatonin alert! If you start reading this book, you’re going to require a sleep aid to get some shuteye. Sullivan has a way of constructing characters and plotlines that, on their surface, are simple. And yet the more you read, the more complex and three-dimensional they become, until you realize that the characters and their motivations are never what they seem to be until the moment they are revealed, leaving you breathless and satisfied. Losing a little (or a lot) of sleep to read Age of Myth is well worth it!
