I fell in love with the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary thirty years ago, when I first moved to town. At the time, I was working as a field biologist, and I loved to hang out at the marsh and birdwatch—I’d see everything from pelicans to peregrine falcons. Later I shifted from field biology to science writing, and some of my first articles were about how the Arcata Marsh serves both as a wildlife habitat and a means of treating the city’s sewage. I learned about the grassroots movement that created the marsh, and the global history of wetlands loss. I’ve been hooked on wetlands ever since.
During research for my book, I visited manmade wetlands in south Florida, built to filter farm runoff from the water before it flows into Everglades National Park. I was first introduced to Wodehouse when PBS aired the BBC adaptations starring Hugh Laurie as the silly ass, Bertie Wooster, and Stephen Fry as his gentleman’s gentleman, Jeeves.
As soon as I stopped laughing, I started looking for the books, most of which are collections of short stories. Published in 1925, Carry On, Jeeves is the third in the series, but it includes the story of how Bertie came to hire Jeeves, so it’s a good place to start.

I first read this book when I was in my twenties, the same age as Tommy and Tuppence (Prudence) Beresford, the protagonists.
I immediately wanted to be Tuppence and married to Tommy! The two of them are young and adventurous in post-WWI London. They not only solve mysteries, but Tuppence does it while wearing fabulous 1920s outfits that I can only dream about.
I also love the relationship between the two of them as partners in crime and life. Tommy is more level-headed, and Tuppence is more imaginative and creative. Together they make the perfect detective team – and married couple.

When I was a teen, I had zero aspirations to become a writer. I didn’t discover my passion for writing until I was thirty! But once I started writing, it was these books and the way they made me feel that I drew on. I wanted strong heroines that I wanted to be—and be friends with. I wanted a slow burn, skin-tingling romance with a lot of push and pull. I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself. To go on a quest. To feel victorious. And it is my hope that I can give my readers all the feels these books gave me.
I devoured everything in the Sweet Valley world as a teen, though I was more into Sweet Valley Twins than Sweet Valley High for some reason. Maybe it’s because I liked the twins’ innocence, and the high school drama was too much (or too relatable!) to me. I like to escape to a happy ending! And in complete seriousness, I debated naming my daughter Lila because I didn’t want her to be associated with mean girl Lila Flower. In the end, I named her Delilah (Lilah—with an h!—for short) and that eased my worries.
At any rate, I’ll read a family saga any day. And we’ve established that I love historical romance and costumes, so give me all the Wakefield history.
